umm...do you have kids?... you do, don't you?
There's a nice train museum in Galveston... A good NY style pizza place on seawalll drive... also a pretty good seafood place on seawall drive...not sure ofthe name, but it's the one with the whale tail sticking up out of the roof...can't miss it. the public beaches aren't that grreat, but some decent ones that you can pay to access... They have a good acquarium and of course,Schliterbon (sp?)

When you're hittin the beach, I suggest driving all the way to the west side of the island. Less people, less drunks, etc. but take all you need with you cause there are few stores that far out. From 61st, turn right on the seawall and drive all the way down. I hear Schlitterbahn is pretty cool, though I haven't been myself. Moody Gardens is a bit pricey and touristy, but still nice. Maybe catch an IMAX if you run out of things to do.
Edit: Be sure to enjoy the stars. Living in the city, you don't get to see much, but if you're going with a significant other, take a blanket and watch the stars on the beach at night. Beautiful.

Galveston's nicer than I thought it'd be. You'll have a better time than that poor sap that's going to Portland...
