Default Mourning will only return to a title contender!!

"He says it will take a miracle, the miracle being that he gets his doctors blessing to play again. Given that, Alonzo Mourning says he might comeback, but only to a title contender.

Mourning has been weakened from a three-year battle with kidney disease — focal segmental glomerulosclerosis — and anemia, he played in a dozen games with the Nets before he could play no more. The Nets signed Mourning to a 4-year contract worth $5.5-million guaranteed. "

From RealGM

Maybe we are waiting to see if Mourning gets clearance for a Kidd/Mourning trade with New Jersey?

How many times must I state the obvious?

Mourning will never play significant minutes again. His heart is one of a warrior and he desperately wants to play, but his body will never allow it.

Period.

Who was the player from San Antonio that came back and played significant minutes after getting a new kidney?

If we could get 20 quality minutes from mourning, we would be much better at the center spot than currently.

Sean Elliott. He was never the same, but he did do halfway decent for a year or two.

If we could get them near Alonzo's prime which just ain't going to happen. Mourning will never be the same for the simple fact that he' only played a few handful of games over the past 3 years. Throw in his major surgery, kidney problems, and other health issues and he's doner than charcoal.

Sean Elliot's diagnosis was not the same and he had a healthy second kidney. Just like Ostertag donating a healthy kidney has not hurt him.

Zo's kidney was massively failing and the other was affected as well. You aren't even coming close to comparing apples to apples.

Another mountain is the contract. No one will give him a shot unless NJ buys him out and he is available for the minimum. The risk is too severe to take on a longterm contract for him at 5.5 a year.

Another good point that everyone seems to want to dismiss.

not true at all!!! Sean Elliott had no massively failing kidneys, he would have died if his brother hadn't donated a kidney. I watched the documentary.

And Sean still came back and helped the Spurs win a title.

Spurs won their title with Elliot before his surgery. He retired before they won a 2nd title.

How desperate are we, we're speaking of a man whom if he made it back would just slow us down and his playing time would just decrease & decrease. This thread might aswell start talking about Barkley, or Rodman, or Jordan if you want to keep dreaming of come backs.

What is it with everybody and Alonzo Mourning? The guy should be in a wheel chair, not playing proffesional ball.
He deserves alot of respect,if not for his great career, than for the brave come-backs he attempted and maybe will continue to attempt, but it still doesn't mean he's what we need.
Even if he manages to come back, you actualy think he'll be playing at the level we need?Right now,Dampier is far better than anything we could squize out of Zo.
Zo should seriously consider retirement,he isn't cut up for this anymore...

I'd swap TAW for him.

So long as if Morning cant play, insurance picks up at least 80% like it does for TAW, I say sure, go ahead... Worst case is its a swap for equally stinky trash... Best case is Mourning actually helps out on the court, (for 10 million per year after luxury tax hit mind you)!

Mournings contract has NO insurance. No cap relief possible either. NJ has him at full pay til there is a trade or a buyout.

Who cares? Morning will never return to superstar status or even starting center status.

Even if insurance pays 80% of his salary,we still have to pay the buck for buck tax,so you'll be paying him his salary+20%.

"Even if insurance pays 80% of his salary"

What's with the "if"? There is no "if" - there is NO insurance, period. It is not at all questionable.

EMan- you are incorrect. I have read Elliot's diagnosis and case history. It presents to students very well clinically because of some abnormal indicators. Elliot was thought to be a candidate for diabetes and had high blood pressure. A colleague of mine performs pathology studies on kidney tissues and sent me the case for classroom discussion. It is very interesting. Bottom line in plain english though is that Elliot had slowly failing kidneys. It is easy to state that he would have died had he not received a transplant from his brother because it would eventually be true. He was not a candidate on the national donor list because his condition was not critical.

Mourning on the other hand had one foot in the grave and the other on the banana peel. I'll be happy to stand toe-to-toe and argue medical research histories if you want, but save yourself the trouble and embarassment. Whereas you think you understand what happened, I do. While you think you learned from a sensational Behind-the-Lines documentary for the purpose of viewership, I have studied and presented the actual case history. While you think you may grasp the nature of the condition, I have actually spoke to colleagues in the field and have studied this area on and off for almost ten years now.

PE- I think he was playing a hypothetical to make the point about hte luxury tax payment.

If Zo wants to come coach big men I'm all for it as long as he isn't occupying a center spot. I'd rather have Hakeem, Ewing, Mutumbo, Karl Malone, hell even Kareem over Mourning.
