Death isn’t a good enough reason. We are all going to die. To me, it came off as a bit of a “look at me” type gesture. If anything, it was an attempt to focus some of the situation on him instead of Kobe and the rest that died in the tragedy.

Everyone dies, but not everyone dies at 41 with their teenage daughter in a horrible accident.

I agree that death isn't enough, but that's not why Cuban did it.

Yeah, I don't think dying after you've retired in a helicopter crash is a legitimate reason for a team not associated with him to retire his number. It's a stretch..a huge stretch. I'd be much more ok with them retiring Duncan's number...and no, he doesn't even have to die (and no, I'd never retire Duncan's number even if he died with a plane full of nuns carrying food to needy children in Africa). The battles between him and Dirk are legendary and will always be a part of Mavericks lore.

Well, it caught on around the league, so Cuban is coming out of this looking like the good guy. The optics are on his side.

Looks like some NBA players may be following Mark Cuban's lead:

And we give them the attention they seek . . .

But a better tribute to Kobe would be to work your ass off like he did to become a better player rather than change your number.
