Totally agreed. Finally saw it last night and loved it. I was very skeptical about the casting of Chris Evans when I heard the news a few years back, but he's been pitch perfect as Captain America.

I loved Noah... no offense intended towards you, but I get a huge kick out of conservative Christians losing their shit over the movie.

Yeah, I just thought it was a bad movie... had nothing to do with being conservative. Just not a good movie. I thought the rock creatures/guardians were a poor rip off of the Ents in LOTR...

Agree on Evans. He really made the role his own in this film.

I didn't like the casting when it was announced, and still wasn't 100% sold after seeing the first movie (which I liked). But now he IS cap.

I guess my issues with his casting mainly centered around age... I was probably envisioning someone older because when I read comics, cap was a little older. But then again, the first movie was his origin, so makes sense for him to be younger.

So all that said - I also like Evans as cap.

Saw 2 movies this week:

Amazing Spider-Man 2 - overall, a solid "meh". Some good stuff (Garfield, Stone, action sequences - especially the swinging shots), some bad stuff (too many villains, very cheesy score in many parts, more unnecessary stuff about his parents), some utterly horrible and ridiculous stuff (electro's origin, electro's "song", Paul Giamatti in one of the worst casting decisions ever made)

Neighbors - good, not great. I definitely laughed, but it's not funny all the way through. Some jokes definitely fell flat. Someone told me beforehand they heard it was compared favorably to Old School - so I probably had high expectations. It is nowhere near Old School. It's worth seeing, but no need to rush to theaters.

Now THAT's a spectacular mash-up.

Exploring what motivates a spider-hating cat to don the mantle of the arachnid to fight crime Tuesday through Friday and only after noon would make for a great origins movie.

Not enough monsters, but what monsters there were were awesome. Very enjoyable movie despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson's part.

Personally, I thought ATJ's story was at least as interesting as the monster fights.

Yeah, he can't act, but I'll take it over say Shia Labeef any day of the week.

I actually thought Elizabeth Olsen was worse.

I also think that the lack of monster fights was due to the budget. 167 mil may sound like a lot, but it today's day of huge budgets it is actually somewhat meager. A whole movie of monsters in every shot is easily going to cost 300+ million, or at least the effects wouldn't be as good.

The only movie with a 300 million dollar budget was one of the Pirates of the Carribean movies..

Well exact estimates are largely unknown, but I know Avatar was in the 300 million range as was Spider-Man 3.

Either way, if people want a movie with Godzilla in 50-70% of it, then you're talking at the very least 250 million.

Jumping back to Amazing Spiderman 2 for a second. This sums up my views on the movie pretty much EXACTLY.

(very spoiler-heavy, FYI)

I haven't seen it yet, but my guess to Spider-Man 2's issues would be Alex Kurtzman. I've heard enough opinions that make me believe the writing is the fault, and it surely reminded me of his other crappy and nonsensical plots as well. Seriously, the guy just can't stick to a simple story and plot line.

Devin - That's exactly what that link sums up, too (and what i felt overall). Basically it boils down to - Great action, good performances (for the most part), horrible and nonsensical plot.

A good friend of mine (whose opinion I trust a great deal on comic movies) said it was pretty good. That X-Men was "back on track" after the horrible X3. I hope to see it soon.

You didn't like X3 or First Class?

X3 was a pile of poop in my estimation. First Class was my favorite super hero movie Fox ever made.

I liked First Class in terms of performances and overall storyline. Really disliked how it just took a big ol' dump on any X-Men continuity/history.

Yeah, the X-Men movies have huge continuity issues, but I am okay with overlooking most of it. I thought DOFP was excellent... maybe my favorite superhero movie since TDK.

First class. I really liked most of the cast, directing, and production value, but the storyline was pretty meh. January Jones was pretty awful as well. So glad she isn't in DOFP.

I'll see it eventually and see what I think.

A lot of big budget summer movies seem to be getting undeserved good reviews, post-Avengers - especially Marvel/Disney properties. Sure, X-Men was made by Fox, but it's still a Marvel comic... Methinks payola is alive & well.

Days of Future Past was X3 & First Class pulped together into a big mess - typical character overload that you've come to expect from the mediocre X-Men/Wolverine franchise... I'd say it's the second-best X-Men movie after X2, but that's not saying much (in my opinion).

Vague spoilers/gripes below (no plot details beyond the trailers):

- Wolverine serves ZERO narrative purpose in the third act and contributes absolutely nothing to the resolution of the plot... Yet he's still there, even though the story doesn't need him and even has a convenient way of removing him without killing him off.

- I never quite figured out why future Magneto thought the 70s version of himself would be any help - it's as if he forgot about what a giant asshole he used to be... Dude was the opposite of helpful.

- Anna Paquin was billed 7th in the credits, despite having only 2 seconds of screen time.

- Needed more Quicksilver... Fox totally bombed an opportunity to milk their most entertaining character since Wolverine showed up in X1.

- Holy hell, there are big enough plot holes in the franchise continuity to fly an entire squadron of Sentinels through... They would've been smarter to just stick with the First Class timeline instead of shoving the mess of the original trilogy into the fold. They broke more than they fixed - the only reason people don't realize that is because the X-Men movies have been largely forgettable since X2.

- Peter Dinklage was completely wasted (and I don't mean drunk, unfortunately...)

Really?? I think The Winter Soldier parkour-kicks Days of Future Past in the head... Truer to its characters, never insulting to the audience, far more entertaining.

I forgot about TWS. That was definitely a better movie. I must confess, though, that I think DOFP has more re-watching value, especially since I have a five-year-old.

Yeah January Jones was abysmal in First Class. Yikes.

Good to hear quicksilver is good (although sad to hear he's good but there's not enough of him) - he looked beyond ridiculous in the trailers with that hair and jacket.

Upon a second viewing, I revert back to my initial reaction: DOFP is my favorite superhero movie since TDK. It's maybe not as good from a scripting or classic filmmaking perspective, but it's a lot more fun.

The very first scene in TWS (where he rescues the SHIELD agents aboard the pirate ship) is awesome... but the finale is a mess. Way too much going on.

DOFP tells a mostly-incoherent story and doesn't even really resolve much by the end, but it knows what kind of ridiculous movie it is and really goes for it. Plus, the performances by Hugh Jackman and Michael Fassbender are more entertaining than anything in the Cap movie.

But this is apples and oranges... comparing an unapologetic popcorn movie with a political thriller starring a superhero.

Malificent is awful. Pretty, but awful.

Just saw XMen and Edge of Tomorrow.

Xmen was non-sensical and only slightly better than X2/X3. Still like the 60s/70s cast and hate almost everyone from the "modern" cast. The movie went nowhere but it was interesting all the same.

Edge of Tomorrow was actually really good and interesting and I don't even like Cruise. I'd recommend it.

Finally got around to seeing Grand Budapest Hotel. I actually liked it a lore more than I thought I would. I wasn't crazy about Ralph Feinnes, and the story was a tad overly simple, but everything else was spot on. Great music, great cinematography, great acting (esp Jude Law).

There is still someone who finds the movie/jackman version of wolverine interesting? That's shocking.
