A double-double center can be invaluable, or he can be Kaman for example. Kaman is putting up basically 20/10 PER36 this year, on 51FG%. Yet he is absolutely terrible, and clearly a net negative for our team. We would be better on some nights if James would get all of his minutes. Dampier was not always awful, come on. He was considered awful because of his contract, and because we needed someone to blame after the 2006 fiasco. Chandler is obviously much better, but Dampier was a league average center.

In this case I would venture they are wrong.

They are slumping hard, after a good start. 5-5 in the last 10. Their defense got exposed, they're depending way too much on the 3-ball, and they are very, very old. They shot the 3-ball on an unsustainable level at the start of the season, and they also took care of the ball on an unsustainable level. They are not true contenders imo.

I would have to see how the loss of Carmelo, Felton has affected their recent, slump. But that team isn't old. Carmelo, jr smith, Felton all under 9 years or so. Next three on their scoring list are less than that. Chandler is 11 and jkiddo is old as,dirt, but that team is to old by any stretch.

Not a huge fan on Felton, imo they're better off with Kidd and Prigioni at the PG spot. You are right, it's more like their bench is old. Anthony is having a great season, yeah, him missing definitely hurt them, but last night they lost with him scoring 45. The defense is clearly not there anymore, that's their biggest problem, their offense was still 7th in december i believe. Their defense plummeted. I guess if everything clicks, i could see them giving the Heat a series, but i would be very surprised if they actually did it.

Who else is in the east...I mean if you are the second best team in the conference you ARE a contender.

Certainly if you have them slated to meet Miami (i assume close to the finals) then I just do not understand your definition of a contender.

I don't think they will the 2nd best team in the East, even if they actually finish second in the standings. I think the Bulls with Rose will be clearly superior come playoff time. The Celtics can also turn it up, like last year. Wouldn't be surprised if say the Pacers takes them out in the first round. True contenders imo: Heat, OKC, Spurs, Clippers, Bulls (with an at least 80% Rose) and maybe Memphis, and an even bigger maybe, the Lakers. All of those teams are better at their best than the Knicks in my opinion.

Knicks aren't contenders.

They need the 3-ball way too much!

With a healthy Rose, sure. They have the best defense in the league imo, they just need some offense. They won 62 2 years ago, with a team that wasn't that deep. Do you think this year Knicks will even come close to win 62 games? I think they will win less than 56.

Our definition of contender is way different. Top four in each conference are contenders.

If the championship season should have taught this fan base one thing it would be that it is less about talent than having the right pieces. You need the right combination to get the best out of your team. Then those pieces need to be syncronized and you have an effective team that will achieve. The sum of the whole than being greater than it's parts. With the salary cap this is more important than ever.

The mavs are coming apart at the seams because no on seems to understand why they are not effective. Cubans problem is that he doesn't understand the foundation of what constitutes team. He tries his best. Teams are not like big business there are too many other variables involved. Complex human dynamics being a great part. It's not just about evaluating individual talent but how those individual talents fit in with what you already have in context with the teams needs. His main weakness seems to be in evaluating the people he hire's to run the team, be it front office or coaching. It took him entirely too long to recognize Nelsons weakness and make the coaching change. Then he reacts and hires his opposite in Carlisle. What is really needed is a blend of the two, rather than the extreem that they represent.

He figured he needed to change direction as far as the roster was concerned. But with that change in roster direction ( getting younger for the future ) he didn't make the parallel coaching change that was also necessary. R Carlisle ( unlike Don Nelson)is not a rebuilding coach. He does not function well under flux rather he requires a stable situation. This will become more evident to even those of you that can't see it now. I fear that Cuban will remain clueless until the team implodes even farther.
