So yeah, if Jazz tie us, we lose the tie. We're two games up, but there's still a statistical possibility with three games left.

How that happens
Jazz go 3-0 and Mavs go 1-2
Jazz go 2-1 and Mavs go 0-3

Number of Mavs wins/Jazz losses is 2.

Mavs schedule
Pistons - bad, but Mavs keep getting blown out by bad teams. Statistically eliminated from the playoffs so they have nothing to play for. Will they tank for picks or will they play like they have nothing to lose?
Blazers - same. Blazers are eliminated from POs and PI
Spurs - locked into the PI and they are beasting. 7-1 in last 8 including wins against the Nuggets and Warriors.

Jazz schedule
Thunder - eliminated from PI/POs
Suns - beast mode, but they're locked into #1 and nothing can change it. They're alternating rest games.
Blazers - eliminated from PI/POs
Thank you.

Option 3
If Mavs, Nuggets, and Jazz all end up with the same record:

When would that happen
Mavs go 0-3
Jazz go 2-1
Nuggets go 2-0

tiebreakers
1. Division winner (this criterion is applied regardless of whether the tied teams are in the same division)
2. Best head-to-head winning percentage among all teams tied

First they would have to break the tie for division leader. Jazz were 4-0 against the Nuggets, so they would be the division winner and get 4th. Mavs break the tie with the Nuggets based on record ( 2-1 record vs. the Nuggets). Nuggets again end up 6th.

Result
4) Jazz
5) Mavs
6) Nuggets

Option 4

If the Nuggets can tie us and beat the Jazz, then Mavs/Nuggets would have a tiebreaker

When would that happen
Mavs go 0-3
Jazz go 1-2 or 0-3
Nuggets go 2-0

Nuggets would take the division, however, the first tiebreaker in a two-team tiebreaker is record. Mavs are 2-1 against the Nuggets.

Result
4) Mavs
5) Nuggets
6) Jazz

Combos that get us third seed
Warriors 3-0 - NOTHING WE CAN DO
Warriors 2-1 / Mavs 3-0
Warriors 1-2 / Mavs 2-1
Warriors 0-3 / Mavs 1-2 (assuming Jazz don't catch up)

Thats why the loss to Washington really hurts right now

The Mavs no longer control their own fate for that 3rd seed.

Warriors have a B2B and they're barely pulling out wins. The first game is against the flaming hot Spurs (7-2) who they are 1-2 against.

Then it's the Pelicans who are 5-1 lately and who won the last game against the Warriors.

We have to play the Spurs too, but Spurs will be on the 2NB2B so here's hoping

Yea but both Pels and Spurs are locked into their play in. Who knows how how either team goes or who plays in the last 2.

Also, why doesn't the 7th seed play the 10th seed. And 8th play 9th seed? Kinda silly at first glance.

One more game:
Spurs (at home)

Possibilities if we go 1-0
3rd seed (Mavs 1-0/ Warriors 1-1 or 0-2)
4th seed (Mavs 1-0/ Warriors 2-0)

Possibilities if we go 0-1
3rd seed (Mavs 0-1/ Warriors 0-2)
4th seed (Mavs 0-1/ Warriors 1-1 or 2-0)

Mavs have now guaranteed at least 4th

I think because they give the two higher seeds two chances before they our completely eliminated.

The lower seed team who loses is going home after one game. Where the higher seeded team who loses still gets that 2nd crack it.

I guess the rest will do him some good.

As someone else mentioned I'm not sure the Spurs or Pels are even going to put up much of fight vs Golden St anyway now with neither of them having something to play for.....

That Washington game might have been the game that did the Mavs in for that 3rd seed.

Spurs testing their starters tonight vs Warriors. Warriors in turn without Thompson and Steph

Do they rest 1NB2B or are they resting starters for remainder of season

Even if we don't get the third seed, I'm feeling WAY better about our playoff chances than I have in any year since 2011. Not even exaggerating. The Mavs are getting hot and firing on all cylinders exactly at the right time.

History has shown that margin of victory is a great indicator of what teams do well in the playoffs, and that really good teams consistently blow out bad teams. In these past two games against bad teams with nothing to play for, the Mavs delivered exactly what they needed to- total and utter domination.

And if us ultimately getting the 4th seed means we draw Utah instead of Denver, that's not such a bad thing, because Utah is coming apart at the seams, and I really think we can destroy that team.

Yeah in some sense maybe it gives incentive to fight for playoff position even in the lower seeds. Otherwise maybe you try to play games with matchups and seeding

I think most of us would agree that the problem isn't Utah or Denver

I think the Mavs can beat either team although Utah IMO would be the more difficult task because the Mavs haven't won a game in Utah in their last 11 outings if I'm not mistaken.

But the real prize in obtaining that 3rd seed as opposed to 4th seed is because you avoid Phoenix in the 2nd round.

I think that is why so many Mavs fans and the Media wants to get that 3rd seed.

Phoenix is a thorn in the side of the Mavs have just simply have Dallas # especially in 4th Qtr's.

Chris Paul plays with great basketball IQ late in games and Dallas simply hasn't been able to defend him or Booker to close out games.

Oh I don't disagree with that at all. Phoenix is winning the title. I'm convinced. We're not betting that team in any round.

I'm just taking the glass-is-half-full approach is we do miss the third seed.

I agree about Phoenix. I think they are a tier above every other team. I don’t think Milwaukee improved and they let PJ Tucker walk inexplicably. GS been banged up. Can’t really see Philly or Boston taking them out. I’ve thought we were headed for Phoenix v. Miami for most of this year. The two deepest, most well rounded teams. Which sucks as I really dislike Chris Paul but I absolutely loathe the Heat franchise. So I guess I would be rotting pretty hard for The Suns?

I respect Paul too much to dislike him. To still be this good at his age, and to still bring a winning culture with him wherever he goes, and to do it despite only being 6'0. When you list the greatest "pure" point guards of all time- meaning guys who are definitely point guards and not mutli-position guys like Magic, or combo guards like Steph- he has a very strong case for GOAT. Isiah Thomas is probably #1, but is right behind him along with guys like Nash, Kidd, and Stockton. I'd actually rank Paul slightly ahead of all of three of those guys.

I don't have anyone in the East to root for, so once the Mavs are eliminated, I probably will root for Phoenix.

I dislike CP3 too. He's a b*itch and plays dirty and goes beyond to manipulate the refs and he always falls short of a championship because karma comes back around. Lol.

When karma really comes around, then Harden and Westbrick should never win a championship. Nobody did more in the last 10 years to ruin this game.

We dint have anything to worry about with Westbrick. Harden might luck out riding Embiids back, but I doubt it.

I just want to shout out Erica for this amazing tracking thread. Today is going to be crucial and I really hope we can get the number 3 seed.

We were the hottest team in the NBA over the last 10 games. Going 8-2 is exceptional and it is unreasonable to expect 9-1
