Time to bring in Koponen or Calathes?
The Mavs are not playing around and seem to be serious about only offering 1-year contracts to everybody. Today JJB learned that and checked out and Stevenson will follow him sooner or later unless nobody is willing to give him a multi-year.
We'll make another one or two quality additions to the roster but ultimatively it seems that this is the year in which the Roddys, DoJos, Mahinmis and Brewers have to show what they've got. So why not bring in one of those two? Right now we only have Kidd at the PG (further additions pending) and relying on Roddy is too risky. Even if he lives up to his Rookie year, there is no guarantee that he ever will be able to handle the point. Koponen and Calathes have experience at the spot and because this is a transitional year, it would make sense in my eyes. I also doubt Kidd will be able to go through all of those 7in8, 6in8, 5in6, whatever-stretches, so Roddy + Calathes/Koponen + another veteran point isn't the worst idea. If it weren't a lockout-shortened season I'd say maybe, but given the lack of a summer league and the shortened training camp and preseason, I can't see them going to guys who've never played a minute in the NBA (and weren't high 1st rounders). They'd sooner go with Booby/JET/DoJo as backups for Kidd than throw a hail mary like that, I'd think.

Koponen? Probably no, the guy is stucked on his development curve i believe, i read the other day that things aren't really going well for him on his team, maybe he isn't even starting anymore, i don't know. Now Calathes on the other hand, i'd love if they bring him over. He had some really great performances in the Euroleague, and was a key contributor on a very strong Greek team in the summer. Excellent passer, improving shooter, a PG with SG size. He obviously can't defend the firebugs, but not a bad team defender.

Throwing in Calathes in the NBA on a shortened season sucks. Too less training, too much chaos etc. Just read what Dirk told about his first season.
Sign one vet as insurance and then just throw Roddy into the cold water and let him play some PG too. I expect Terry to play some point too. |
