RE:Game Day Thread- Mavs Vs Jazz
Marcus, Nene, Anthony, and Andre Miller is not a bad team. I thought that if they could get production from there younger players like Anthony and Nene that they could be a 9th or 10th place seed in the West. Maybe 8th. I'm a Denver fan though. They have some more young quiet players on that team in Rodney White and Nicholoz Tkskihlitzi(sp?). Marcus Camby is also playing some good ball.

As Stephon Marbury said the other night: "I just hoop."
Chris Anderson is hoopin'. Man he is everywhere. I might have an "underachiever" to root for on another team.

While I'm happy with Fin's line, I'm giving the game ball to Delk and Walker.

andersen has nice height and great athleticism... similar to AK in that regard... he's extremely long and can play some defense.
he flies in for the offensive rebounds like eddie najera..accept with more height, quickness, and jumping ability

I would agree. Especially with Delk. Totally amazing. 22 pts in 26 minutes and it really seemed to almost all come in the flow. And Walker's passing was amazing.

Delk and Walker for sure. Delk lit a fire under the Mavs in the 2nd quarter and we started playing solid defense. Walker was incredible in passing the ball. And lets not forget Jamison's double double (with 4 assists).

MFF, I don't think fin had the best game of anyone on the team..but, i do think he had the mos important performance.
Why?
The Mavs needed him to get it going offensively
and
He did get the Mavs offense going hitting a couple of quick shots to start the game

People better watch out for Denver in the next couple of years. I think Melo is big dog part II... but Nene is going to be a solid power forward. Miller is a very good point guard. Skita can be a nice contributor. And they have some nice role players with those 4 guys... like Andersen and Camby and Barry.

Isn't he the same one who dunked on Lebron in the summer league? It seem slike every time I see Chris he is dunking. I forget which game came on TV I think it was against the Kings maybe? That guy really does have some athleticism.

The guy you saw that dubked on Lebron was the undrafted rookie that plays for Orlando. Cannot recall his name.

RE:Game Day Thread- Mavs Vs Jazz
Wow, the Mavs are a deep, young, talented and athletic team! What a dominating performance. I think that this game will be much more like what we see for the rest of the season than the 1st 2 games were. None of the Mavs had games that were out of the ordinary for them. That is what makes this team even scarier for the rest of the NBA.
Regarding Fortson, I can't believe the criticism of him. Shaq only scored 16 points that game and the Mavs matched them in rebounds. If his teamates would have been in synch the Mavs would have won. He did his part. The big 3 didn't. It was the 1st game of the season and it is not that big of a deal.

Why do you think Shaq only scored 16 against the Mavs? Because the Mavs were getting hammered by the Lakers. Any Laker on the floor was getting basically any shot they wanted. Similar to tonight, why did Fin, Dirk, and Walker score under 20 points each? Not because of the job that anyone did on them defensively..because the Mavs were hammering the Jazz and anyone they put on the floor got any shot they wanted.

RE:Game Day Thread- Mavs Vs Jazz
Would have been nice to have had everyone playing as well as tonight when we played the Fakers. I expected an improvement from our guys, but nothing like this. Utah probably made us look better than we actually played, but still for a team with 2 of the games starters having joined the team in the last 2 weeks, we're scary good.

Fortson was not the problem in the Lakers game. It was mostly Nash & Finley, they sucked that game. Dirk was part of the problem too, he didn't make any of his 3s.

RE:Game Day Thread- Mavs Vs Jazz
By JAIME ARON, AP Sports Writer
November 1, 2003
DALLAS (AP) -- Newcomers Antoine Walker and Tony Delk began looking comfortable in the Dallas offense, each sinking a pair of 3-pointers during an exciting third-quarter stretch that carried the Mavericks past the Utah Jazz 127-102 Saturday night.
Delk scored 14 of his 22 in the third period while Walker had 10 of his 16. The Mavericks scored 41 points, two shy of the biggest third quarter in team history.
Fellow recent addition Antawn Jamison overcame an 0-for-6 start to finish with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Dallas' usual Big Three of Finley, Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash were practically an afterthought, though still productive. Finley scored 16, Nowitzki had 15 on 6-of-8 shooting, and Nash had 12 points and seven assists.
Delk opened the second half with a nice reverse layup, then Walker hit a long 3-pointer. Delk made a 3 and Walker hit another, then Walker made a nifty pass that gave Finley an easy layup. Finley followed with a long skip pass that set up Delk for another 3 and a 20-point lead.
DeShawn Stevenson scored 13 in the first quarter but only 11 the rest of the way for Utah, which couldn't successfully follow up its surprise win over Portland in the opener.
The Jazz were ahead by three in the first quarter, but didn't lead again in the final three periods.
Andrei Kirilenko scored 21, former Mav Raja Bell had 16 and Matt Harpring and Ben Handlogten added 10 each.
For Dallas, the lopsided win was a welcome relief after losing handily to the Lakers and scraping past Golden State. The second half brought the expected breakout for the Mavs, who feature only four active holdovers from a squad that won 60 games and reached the conference finals last season.
In adding more weapons to an offense that already was the league's highest-scoring the last two seasons, Dallas brought in Walker and Delk from Boston, Jamison from Golden State and signed Travis Best as a free agent.
The first half was choppy, but once the Mavs slid into their up-tempo style there were plenty of highlights. Among them was a nice alley-oop to Finley that brought the crowd to its feet. Walker had six assists.
Another big cheer came when Jamison dove out of bounds to save a ball and heaved it near midcourt. Walker snagged it out of a crowd and knocked it to Dirk Nowitzki, who dished to Best. He somehow spun it in while getting fouled then completed the three-point play.
Dallas coach Don Nelson began experimenting with lineups ahead by 18 late in the third. Despite a pre-game pledge not to use more than two newcomers at once, he teamed Walker, Delk, Jamison and Best with Shawn Bradley. Othercombinations followed during a garbage-time fourth quarter.
Notes
The Mavericks improved to 15-9 in home openers and 3-0 at their new arena. Dallas also broke even in all-time home games against Utah, each winning 29. ... Carlos Arroyo (sprained left ankle) and Keon Clark (bone spur right ankle) didn't play for Utah, while Dallas was without rookie Josh Howard(sprained ankle).

I wonder how many teams have scored 127 or more in the NBA with only one player scoring more than 20?

RE:Game Day Thread- Mavs Vs Jazz
I always enjoy the opponent's perspective. Here it is:
================================================== =====
Jazz: Mavs find the zone, whip Jazz
By Phil Miller
The Salt Lake Tribune
DALLAS -- First the Mavericks played a zone, then they got in one. All the Jazz could do was zone out.
The talent gap between the Western Conference finalists and the picked-for-last-place overachievers is supposedly substantial, but honestly, Michael Jordan and the Dream Team would have a hard time keeping up with the Mavericks when their shots start falling as though laser-guided. And they did a lot of falling Saturday, allowing Dallas to lap the Jazz, 127-102, in American Airlines Center.
"I've been on the good end of that stick," said Jazz forward Raja Bell, who wore a Dallas uniform last season. "When you score the way they do, you're going to beat teams even when they play well."
Not that the Jazz did Saturday, true enough. But they weren't awful, either. DeShawn Stevenson scored Utah's first nine points and finished with a career-high 24, Andrei Kirilenko added 21, and Bell collected 16 points, more than he
ever did as a Maverick. The Jazz kept turnovers to a minimum, registered assists on two-thirds of their baskets, and topped 100 points for the first time.
All it got them was a close-up view of Dallas' flying circus. The Mavs scored so quickly, so efficiently, so crowd-pleasingly -- and especially, so frequently -- that the Jazz's silver linings held all the value of a good-attendance certificate. And speaking of attendance, Utah's starting point guard was in the house, but wearing a sharply-tailored suit instead of his uniform.
"We can't use that as an excuse," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of Carlos Arroyo's sprained left ankle, which left a pair of rookies, Raul Lopez and Mo Williams, to try to slow Mavs' all-star Steve Nash. "We just got a good lesson tonight on how to play."
Yep, it's an impressive formula. First, shake up the rookies by switching into a zone defense, leaving the Jazz to stand around and scratch their heads, wondering where to go. "They went to the zone, and we started getting passive on offense," grumbled Stevenson. "After that, the game was over."
Not quite. The Jazz managed only four baskets in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter, yet somehow still lurked only seven points behind, 51-44, as halftime approached. But with 14 seconds left, Bell tried to halt a Maverick fast break by grabbing Nash in the lane. The foul was ruled flagrant, giving Nash two free throws and Dallas the ball. Antawn Jamison turned the possession into a five-point play by drawing a foul as he drove to the basket, widening the lead to 12 at halftime.
"It kind of took a little wind out of our sails," Bell said. "It was a little deflating, but we still had a chance to come out and climb back into the game."
Climbing the building's brick walls might have been easier. Dallas opened the second half at a NASCAR pace, scoring 16 points -- including four three-pointers, two apiece by Antoine Walker and Tony Delk -- in barely 200 seconds. "It's contagious. Somebody knocks down a three, and the next thing you know all five guys are knocking down threes," Bell said. "When a team like that gets hot, you've got to stay close enough to strike, and we didn't stay close."
That's because, as a change of pace from all the treys, the Mavs simply charged to the basket, piling up 33 fast-break points and an amazing 29 layups. Five different Mavs made six baskets or more, and seven scored double-figure points, led by Delk (22) and Jamison (18).
"Every shot we missed because of [Dallas' zone], they made a layup," Sloan said. When that happens, he added, "you are going to have a rude awakening. We had one tonight."

3 statistics-facts which reflex what the Mavs should care about in the next games.
Rebounds and FTA (not FTM) seem to be under control.
