Mavs to target Joe Johnson
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slu...avericks062810
Quote:
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban will pursue a sign-and-trade to lure Atlanta Hawks free agent Joe Johnson(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Mavericks are unlikely to engage the Cleveland Cavaliers into a sign-and-trade for LeBron James(notes), but Johnson has emerged as a realistic target for the Mavericks. Johnson, is more likely to embrace a sign-and-trade to the contending Mavs than sign a free-agent contract with New York or Chicago, sources said.
“New York is far from his first option,” one source with knowledge of Johnson’s thinking said.

could this happen without the Dust Chip? Say Butler +?
I'm convinced that Butler/Marion just doesnt work.

By playing JJ at center we can draw Bynum out of the paint. Duh.

Kidd / J Johnson / Butler / Dirk / Haywood with Roddy B and a gaggle of ROYs....that isn't a horrendous mix. Throw in a quality backup for Dirk and I'm interested in next season.

Certainly a lot of possibilities here, depending what Atlanta wants to do (assuming there's ANY truth to this).
DUST works straight-up. Could also take Pachulia off their hands, given they owe him another $14.5 million over the next three years, are notoriously cheap, and didn't play him that much last season (and he'd be a nice backup C for us), by adding Stevenson's expiring on our side.
Depending on how the cheapskates in Atlanta feel about Marvin Williams, we could take him off their hands, too--Damp + Terry, Damp + Caron, or Damp + Stevenson/Carroll/Barea all work for Johnson, Pachulia & Williams. As would Terry/Caron/Barea.
Not sure I'd want to give up Caron to get Williams, but I agree with many folks who think Caron + Marion isn't really working, so if it takes him to get Johnson, and we get a backup 3/4 in return, I could live with that.
Atlanta would save a BOATLOAD of money on such a deal. They'd probably jump on it.

Johnson may play better when he is not the best player on his team? You know, Pau Gasol plays pretty well when the opposing team is focusing on Kobe Bryant.
I've read several different things about what Atlanta wants.
I've read they may not want a sign and trade in fear of taking on salary. We do have a decent chunks of expirings without Caron Butler, and we definitely have enough with him. I've heard the Hawks want Haywood though ... they want a "true" center so that Horford can play power forward and Josh Smith can play small. If Haywoods market is too pricey for Cuban ... this might be a good way to put him in use, and try to utilize Caron Butlers talent/expiring in some other way.

Great idea, Haywood definitely will go to the highest bidder. Everyone slides down a notch, now they have a guy who can bang on division rival Howard.

This is the first time I've read that article. He wrote it over almost two months ago and he nailed it. Even hinted at luring Lebron with the prospect of joining a Kidd/Johnson/Dirk trio. Three guys who fit around Lebron's skill set perfectly.
Hopefully this is what management has in mind.

so i'm curious as the dream scenario, how would the mavs lure lebron with johnson on board?
at that point the mavs
gained: jjohnson
lost: caron/hayward or something like that
what would they be able to pay him? they are over the cap again. so a damp/roddy trade for king james too?
kidd, jjb
jjohnson, stevenson
lebron, he doesnt need a backup w/ jjohnson/dirk?
dirk
.... who'd be the center in this scenario?

The ultimate dream scenario would be to make a S&T for Johnson using any of Butler, JJB, Stevenson, Dominique Jones, and cash. Then using Roddy and Dust to acquire Lebron before finally resigning Haywood and bringing on a backup center (either Damp or Shaq)
That would give us:
Haywood / Shaq-Damp
Dirk / Marion / Najera
Lebron / Marion
Johnson / Terry
Kidd / -
However, since it may take Haywood to get Johnson we'd want to use anything but Dust/Roddy and hopefully be able to hold on to Dominque Jones to use in a Lebron trade as well. A Haywood/Butler trade would be ideal then use DUST/Roddy/anything else needed to acquire Lebron. Use the MLE to fill out the center positions and you're set.
Shaq* / Damp*
Dirk / Marion / Najera
Lebron / Marion
Johnson / Terry
Kidd / -

you left out matt carroll and dominique jones, they can be backups. jet too. we could have always kept that solomon alabi as a center. oh well, it's not like this scenario is going to happen anyway. we could play jjb at center and still cruise to a championship with that lineup

Don't forget, we would still have DoJo and terry in this scenario as a backup at guard and Marion as a backup at forward.
But you are right, we would be lacking at center. So the Mavs have a few possibilities here - Shaq and Damp should both be on the market and have expressed interest in playing here. David Lord seems to think that Gortat could be available for a price as low as jjb and stevenson in a trade. It wouldn't be the best situation at center, but considering how stacked you would be at positions 2 through 4, I think you could find a way to make it work.
The hard part of this whole scenario is landing Joe Johnson and Lebron.

JJ and lebron is key, finding centers and filling out the roster would be the easy part.

The thing with that is you've gotta be damn sure you can get a deal done for centers.

I don't think that would be too difficult to do. For starters you have Shaq and Damp as options. Gortat would be a nice fit in this scenario as well depending on what Orlando is asking for in return.

tap them brakes...I don't even like allowing myself to dream that big. It just causes frustration as reality sets in later on.

I have a feeling everyone's "wish" for LLE for Shaq is smokin' the sweet stuff. It's a major buyer's market this summer and the price is going to be up, I think it takes the full MLE to get him. I'll be stunned if he'll be ok with just half of it.
It's speculated (on our side) that you maybe could get Gortat for Barea, Stevenson and something minor...if you can do that, run with it.
You still have most of the core pieces for a LeBron deal (DUST, Roddy, Dojo, etc)...you've gotten Joe Johnson, and still have the MLE, LLE to take care BACKUP positions, backup center, and maybe PF.

Oh we're just having a little bit of fun here sike. I still think that the odds are that LeBron ends up in Chicago.

Correction, he's the coach of the Rangers. I wouldn't go as far as saying he actually coaches them. Have you how many times Kinsler drops down for a bunt in the 8th inning with runners on?
