Portland will buy out Francis
Clippers Aim To Get Francis
July 2, 2007 - 3:54 am
L.A. Times -
Moving to bolster the team at point guard, the Clippers are pursuing three-time All-Star Steve Francis, who could become a free agent this week, league and team sources said Sunday.
The Portland Trail Blazers , who acquired the eight-year veteran Thursday, are expected to buy out the final two years and $34.25 million of Francis' contract, freeing him to agree to terms elsewhere after he clears waivers. Teams cannot sign players until July 11.
General Manager Elgin Baylor and Coach Mike Dunleavy are also interested in Jason Hart, who joined the team late last season, and Brevin Knight, but Francis is potentially the team's highest-profile option.
The Clippers hope to sign Francis, 30, for a portion of the mid-level exception, reuniting him with his longtime friend, guard Cuttino Mobley.

Absolutely the right move by Portland. Putting Francis around all that young talent would have been a horrible idea.

Like Snoop suggested, I think we may want to look into possibilities of acquiring Francis this off-season if we indeed plan on shipping out Terry. If we're only talking a portion of the MLE, there's certainly not much risk involved at all.

Just a guess, but he should end up in either Mil, Cleveland or Miami. Most likely Miami.
Miami needs PG who can create his own shot when Shaq is on the bench, and DWade is being triple teamed. Let's face it, Francis would make teams pay for that.
Cleveland needs another player who can create and take some of the load off LBJ. Gibson is the future, but he needs another couple of years, IMO.
I am not sure if Mil would want him, but they need a PG to go with Redd and Bogut badly.
Francis, Redd, Simmons, Villeneauva, Bogut would be stout.

We can't sign someone to the MLE or portion of it and then turn around and trade him right away, can we? I think there's a clause in the CBA forbidding that.

Steve Francis to return to Rockets
Three-time All-Star picks former team over Heat, Mavs and Clippers
By JONATHAN FEIGEN
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
Francis chose the Rockets over the Heat, Mavericks and Clippers, his agent Jeff Fried said on Thursday.
"I just hung up with Daryl (Morey, the Rockets general manager)," Fried said. "He is dealing with facilitating the contract.
"It's a combination of a variety of factors including the fit with the team, a comfortableness with the organization and a familiarity with the surroundings. He has a home in Houston. In so many ways, it has remained his home, despite some interim stops, Orlando and New York.
"For Steve, it's coming home."
