I would absolutely love to get Rondo.... but what is the best trade package we could even offer? Something centered around Ellis? Wright? Unless we were signing Rondo outright, I don't really see how he ends up here...

Rondo could leverage his way out of Greentown, he already stated he will not extend with the C's and neither with the Kings (most probable trade target). So he might end up being a bargain because Boston has to settle for anything really.

Unless we're going back to dealing (multiple) first-round picks, we barely have "anything really" to offer compared with literally every other NBA team.

Would Wright and a protected #1 be enough to get Rondo?
Dirk has maybe 3 more VERY productive years so I say we go all in.

Rockets just traded Alonzo Gee and other non-guaranteed contracts for Jason Terry and 2 second round picks.

This is clearly a shot at the Mavs. Morey probably can't sleep at night trying to figure out ways to get back at the Mavs for stealing Parsons, and this the best he could do. Wouldn't be surprised if next he signed Josh Howard to a vets minimum deal.

Not everything revolves around the Mavs, dude. More likely an attempt to configure a trade down the road for Rondo or another player. 2 picks and Terry's large expiring contract could figure into that equation.

I love that you pretend that we're being egotistical, when you rushed over as soon as you saw the tweets to post this in the Mavericks' offseason thread.

Even if it had nothing to do with Dallas (which you don't know), Morey has been obsessed with Cuban and the Mavs for the past couple years... there's no arguing that. Even if HOU is just using Terry and the picks as trade bait, I garuntee the fact that Terry is one of the greatest and most beloved Mavs of all-time was at least in the back of Morey's mind when he made this trade.

True dat. But 6'10" with a center's body is the key. Can they stand their ground when DHoward is backing them down? Can they clear space and grab boards? Can they make opposing guards think twice before slicing to the rim? Last year only Dalembert had a chance to do such things and he did them less often than needed. I'm anxious to see what Smith does against Howard, after they practiced against each other for years in Houston. Maybe we get something like Blair v San Antonio. No matter what else, all our centers now are at least 4 inches taller than Blair, who's game I loved...he is just too short. He's just like Wright, who's game I also like, but he's still too skinny.

It would probably take a deal that involved us shipping out picks AND also taking on Jeff Green or (more likely) Gerald Wallace. At some point the team just doesn't have enough high-priced players that are worth trading in that scenario.

I doubt that very much... just adding a relatively low-cost (one year deal) veteran who has hit tons of huge postseason shots in his career. He's worth the risk if all you're trading is Alonzo Gee and a couple of second-round picks.

Only in the sense that we're a division rival and that the Mavs are more in the Rockets' league than are the Spurs. I think people here are taking the Morey stuff a little too personally.

I would not consider the egotism here to be fake. Wright and a pick for Rondo? Yeah, that's definitely going to happen.

More like the Rockets, who are already thin on the wing, lose even more depth. But thank God you have two second round picks to go get Rondo with now.

What about some type of 3-team trade involving Ellis, Rondo and Bledsoe?
Ellis/Wright to Phoenix
Bledsoe to Boston
Rondo to Dallas
I don't see Dallas making any deals directly with Boston without having to take back Wallace.

Yeah, I'm fine with this team as it is right now as well. I hope the guys are working out, but also getting rest and spending some time with their families. Once the season starts it's gunna be war as usual in this tough Western Conference.

We don't need any more players, we are set with what we have. Too many people want like 3 or more stars on a roster. This is not NBA 2k or NBA Live, you don't need all those stars to be successful in the NBA.

Actually, I don't care at all about this trade. If Morey wanted to piss Dallas and their fans off, he failed IMO. I love what Terry did for the Mavs, but since leaving in 2012 he's fallen off a cliff. And because of that I could care less if a washed up player plays for our state rival. However, as I wrote, I stll appreciate it a lot what Terry did while being a Mav (with the exception of punching Finley in the nuts, that was complety unnecessary).

I actually think Terry could be valuable for Houston come playoff time...
...that is...if they make the playoffs.

I know Coach K is probably biased because he went to Duke... but no way Mason Plumlee should've made Team USA over Parsons. He serves no role on the team. Parsons is the ideal stretch 4 for international play.

Pretty much this. I appreciate what Terry was and what he did for us. Right now he's an expiring contract of 5mill who may be able to play the role of marksman off the bench for 5-10mpg. As a GM you can't play rivalries-- you have to do what is best for your team. I assume Morey wanted the picks and rental of Terry.

Thing is, you always have to be willing to pull a trade when it's a discount, but Rondo/Ellis would be awful together. It'd be like the Toines all over again. Sure, Ellis may move on after this season (or at least ask for more money) and Rondo brings more grit and defense, but unless Ellis is part of the deal, it might actually hurt us short-term. Rondo isn't going to ask out of Boston just to backup Ellis here and an Ellis/Rondo backcourt brings none of the shooting that we'd need (neither is a great jumpshooter and both need the ball to be effective on the drive)

I agree with the last 2 sentences, but I'm not sure I trade Ellis for Rondo straight up. With his history of injuries, I'm not sure Rondo will ever be his old self again, while Monte is showing growth that no one would have predicted this time last year. What if he steps it up another notch? What if Carlisle tweaks the team D enough to make Ellis good enough, like he did with Jet?
I know how well Ellis meshes with Dirk. Its the last thing we should mess with now, unless its for a star with a huge upside...Not sure Rondo has that.

I don't see an Ellis/Rondo combination as an issue, since there are probably only two scenarios in which we get Rondo: 1) an Ellis-centric trade 2) we sign him outright next summer if Ellis walks.

Completely agree...outside of trading Chandler/Wright/Draft Pick for Rondo/Wallace, we have no chance at Rondo without compromising Ellis one way or another.
