Does Trae Young really think he has a chance at ROY? Or even Donovan Mitchell whobsaid TY shouodbwin it? Are these guys for real? Luka likely had better numbers than he (Mitchell) did. Should be unanimous.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle recently joined the Dennis and Cowlishaw show on ESPN Dallas 103.3 [KESN-FM] to provide some insight on the offseason ahead for Luka Doncic. Here are some of the highlights:

https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dal...-offseason?f=r

What are we going to see in Luka Doncic's growth if he puts in the same kind of work in his first offseason guys like Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash did in their first couple of offseasons?

Carlisle: "The possibilities are really infinite. He can really take this to whatever level he commits to. Our job is going to be to give him the tools for success by being there for him, being in the gym with him, giving him the right things to work on, giving him the right conceptual things that he needs to do to help our team to continue to get better - but it's a slow climb.

"Go back to when Dirk was a rookie - and he didn't have this kind of success his rookie year. In his case, that really drove him even harder. And one thing that Luka is going to have to take away from this -- which is difficult if indeed he does win rookie of the year, which I agree with you he will - to not over-celebrate that success and just feel like you've kind of arrived. That's one of the traps that can happen.

"We talked to him about that [Friday] and how, look, this gets harder and you're going to have to dig in even more. We had a great meeting with him, and I think he has an understanding of what needs to happen. But from this point going forward, it's all about the work."

What is his summer going to look like - the balance between work and rest?

Carlisle: "Well, there will be a period of rest now. He'll be back in Dallas for a week in May and a week in June with our other young guys to do a developmental week twice. And I'm going to go to Slovenia at a certain point - I don't want to advertise when it is because I don't want it to be a media circus - to get in the gym with him along with one of our other staff guys.

"Look, we've got to set the tone for the importance of this summer for him. It's got to be the right amount of rest, and the right amount of hard work. He hasn't had this long an offseason in any time in recent years. All the EuroLeague stuff has been going well into June, and he's always been on one of the good teams. And so every day is going to be a day where he's got to decide - what is it today? What is it today to move to tomorrow and keep getting better?

"If he approaches this summer the way that I believe he's going to, he's going to have a chance to keep moving his career upward and upward and upward."

Have to hope his early success doesn’t go to his head. I’ve already seen him doing ads for Bose and a watch company. He’s got plenty of things he can add to his game to become elite.

That's OK, though. He's got to learn to conquer both sides of being a young star. The endorsements only ease his financial state of mind while getting his personality out there. I think between the Carlisle comments and Luka's demeanor, he has the right mind to approach it. Can't hurt learning from Dirk either.

As legacy, stars, market, fanbase, etc goes then as we all know Dallas Mavericks isn't on same level as big clubs like Knicks, Lakers, Celtics, Bulls and Warriors. One might even say, that they need to catch Rockets, Nets, etc before.

Nowitzki era with Mark Cuban ownership helped Mavericks to become top10 most valuable NBA club, but to make next step, Mavericks needs another really big star. There is golden opportunity at least catch up with Bulls and maybe even Celtics when Luka era goes well. Hopefully also Dallas as a city can become so called "world class" city.

Luka Doncic is one of the most marketable young NBA star there is and he can help Mavericks to become one of the major clubs. To do that, only winning isn't enough. He needs to build his brand. Thankfully he is friend with Kobe Bryant. He was master at balancing training and brand building.

Yep. Luka in the first third of the season is a completely different looking player mobility-wise.

Only one rookie finished among the NBA's top 15 most popular jerseys: Mavericks phenom Luka Doncic

He'd probably be one spot lower if it weren't for his ripped jerseys.

But he did manage to compensate for it with triple doubles. Hard to hate on his rookie campaign. If he makes the necessary changes to his diet and exercise routine, then there won't be many players in the league better than him. He'll be voted in as an All-Star by not only the fans this time around.

That shouldn`t be a problem. He already had unbelievable success before, especially last season (Eurobasket champion, Euroleague Champion and the MVP's there). Probably much bigger than this year in terms of what it meant to him.

If he was the type to let success go to his head, it would have happened already. Especially as he was younger and less mature 1-2 years ago. Clearly he has the right mentality. I mean it would have been impossible to achieve what he has achieved at this age without a rock solid mentality, no matter the talent.

Yes, that is true, and thing is this happened last year in Europe as well! He was otherwordly in the first half of the season and struggled a bit in the second half. Although he pulled it together to come up big in the big games at the end.

Surely conditioning and free throws should be the key things to work on this Summer.

Cool

So, umm, the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Twitter account is stanning HARD for Luka as ROY... This is one of the more bizarre things I've ever seen -- they're even bringing up the 2011 championship run into the conversation. https://twitter.com/kraftmacncheese/...97158882631680

@kraftmacncheese: Please don't use Cheese to sully the good name of Luka. Zion would be lucky to become a Lukaholic

@kraftmacncheese: Yeah, guess I don't watch too many games... Luka is just younger, had more points, more rebounds, better shooting percentages, was rookie of the month every single month, was almost an all-star starter as a rookie and played in the Western Conference...

@kraftmacncheese: We're just gonna leave this here...#mavs #RookieoftheCheese

@kraftmacncheese: Thanks for the love, our mac and cheese tastes like heaven,
greatest of all time like Dirk in 2011...

@kraftmacncheese: Thanks for the love, you answered the call,
doing the dirty work like Brian Cardinal

@kraftmacncheese: Our Mac and Cheese is the best you know what's up,
Always a smart move like putting JJ in the starting line-up

@kraftmacncheese: Our cheese is the realness, too good, we ain't no fakers,
coming through like Corey Brewer game 1 2011 against the Lakers

@kraftmacncheese: Thanks for the love, our mac and cheese is a phenomenon
We just trying to hit our shot like DeShawn Stevenson

It's also foolish to give Young playmaking advantage.

Young was playing in the worst conference in recent memory and had solid guys to pass to. Collins is extremely solid and they had 8 guys shooting over 35% from three. Mavs had four after the trade (Kleber, Jackson, Broekhoff, Burke)

Doncic somehow averaged 8.5 assists in April with a roster made up of mostly second, third stringers and borderline NBA talent, completely unable to hit anything. Young had 8.8 with the superior roster in the worse conference.

That is bizarre. I wonder who is behind those twitter posts, and why. So strange, but whoever it is, they seem to be pretty well-informed about the Mavericks.

While true...I can't penalize a guy for having a better team. I never understood that in sports. People tried to do it with Dak because he had a solid team around him. Its not his fault. Its still a tough task to go out there and play this game as a rookie.

Young isn't winning ROY, so the discussing of it in any fashion joking or otherwise is rather moot.

And now I want Mac and Cheese. Thanks a lot.

Wow, the entire first team (1-5) were drafted 1-5. That's pretty rare.

8, 11, 19, 26 and 36 for the second team

Whatever moron voted for huerter on the first team needs their vote taken away.

Mikael Bridges got more robbed than Brunson.

And this vote was of course an idiot Hawks journalist...

Mikael...team was trash, his stats dont look eye opening but his advanced defensive stats are pretty yummy.

I think soon easily one of the best defender in the league.

There's no e in his first name just a heads up. I love mikal but I don't think he deserved to be over jalen this year. I'm also curious what numbers you are referencing as all the ones Iv seen(opponent per, defensive fg%, basic block steal numbers) were all bad. He had a positive on off defensive rating is about the only positive I found

**spoiler alert - they go with Luka
In this positionless basketball era, who’s the better prospect, Luka or Zion?

Really? Comparing a guy who put up historic first year numbers and is recognized as a franchise player, maybe the most desired player in the league if one compares age, size, skill set, room for improvement, compared to an as yet undrafted, NBA untested college player? Slow offseason, eh guys? LOL

@DraftExpress: RJ Hampton told ESPN that watching Luka Doncic playing for the Mavericks this season, in his hometown of Dallas, gave him comfort with the idea of bypassing college for professional basketball.
