Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Is this guy not available anymore? I know earlier in the year the rumor was Jamison and filler to Cleveland for Ilgauskas. Apparently, Nellie and Donnie are big fans of Ilgauskas...not sure about Cuban. I don't know if Ilgauskas is a fit or not on our team considering our up-tempo offense. But at this point...I want a real center...I don't want Nowitski to play center anymore. Go out and get one...be it Dampier or Illgauskas or Ostertag etc. How has Ilgauskas performed against the top teams in the West? Here are the numbers:
Timberwolves: 12 pts 12 rebounds on 11/21/03
18 pts 6 rebounds 3 blks on 02/06/04
Lakers: 19 pts 8 rebounds 1 blk on 01/12/04
12 pts 9 rebounds 2 blks on 02/04/04
Kings: 9 pts 8 rebounds 1 blks on 10/29/03
13 pts 9 rebounds 2 blks on 01/22/04
The Cavs haven't played the Mavs or Spurs yet. I would definitely trade Walker and filler for Ilgauskas. From the Cavs perspective...I think they would as well. They already have Battie and Diop manning the middle. Walker, Boozer, and James isn't too bad in the Eastern Conference.

RE:Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Z's been discussed A LOT here...
my thoughts:
1) ESPN reports that he is not on the trading block now...not sure if I believe that, though.
2) Slow...maybe too slow for our run and gun.
3) History of foot problems....healthy this year but he's had surgeries in the past that scare me.
But I do agree with the general idea. Mavs will NOT win it all until they have a more legit 5... I like Dampier or Tag better. They don't need the shots and play better D. I don't know that we can get Dampier, but TAG is possible this summer if he'll play for a bit less money to come home and try for a ring.
I still think that the acquisition of Williams is the signal that we won't go for a 5 until this summer.

RE: Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Tags is perfect here. He would not want to shoot, be willing to do alittle dirty work and clog the lane, hit the glass hard, hit the opponent hard, and free up the other four to do what they do best.

Yeah Tag would be great here but I see us picking him up in FA. If we could make a trade for Z or Dampier now and get Tag in the offseason then we would be looking at a very serious title run next year with a center rotation of Z/Dampier/Bradley or Dampier/Tag/Bradley...id prefer the second one and actually see it as being more plausible to the players however either one would be extremely fine with me.

RE:Zydrunas Ilgauskas
I think Z could probably still be had, but that's just my own hunch. I think he could really help this team, even though I have a lot of concerns about him. But the truth is, I would worry about trading away as much as Cleveland would ask for just to get him here.
Tag is a name that often mentioned here. I think he COULD be a good fit here, but I'm afraid that Nellie would hesitate to give him many minutes. I just worry that he's too much of an offensive liability for Nellie. Maybe not though...

Well Z is more known for his offensive skills than his defensive ones. The problem with Z is the question mark on how fast he is and whether or not he could keep up with our fast pace.
I would do a Jamison and filler for Z straight up....jamison playing with lebron is scary..but we'll see what happens, or rather..what does not.

RE: Zydrunas Ilgauskas
I think Z would be horrendous here. He is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww and immobile. He plays terrible D (probably because he is so immobile) - and isnt the reason we need a C due to needing someone to improve the D?
He does have a decent shot and gets a few rebounds cause he is tall. But we arent hurting for O and the boards are ok as is, also. So I dont see any way he adds a thing in Dallas.

well considering how LaFrentz hollowed out our inside and Bradley sticks the whole team together, I think defense is vital if we pick up another center.

RE: Zydrunas Ilgauskas
I would prefer to wait three months and sign 'Tag. Ilgauskas would cost us one of our best players. All 'Tag costs is a roster spot and a little bit of Cubans money. I think he's a better fit for us than 'Z' anyway.
Let's exercize a little patience. A major move this late in the season is going to set us back and leave us at a distinct disadvantage come playoff time. Any move we make now should be made with the future in mind. Dumping Jamison or Walker in the hopes that Ilgauskas can propel us to the championships this year is a big mistake.

RE:Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Z is slow. There's no denying that. What I like about him is that he does command a double team on offense that would allow this team to continue to score and do it in new ways. I get tired of watching leads disappear because jumpshots stop falling.
Having said that, I agree that this team needs defense out of the center position. Z won't provide much of that, although I think he's better than some give gim credit for. Remember, he's 7'3. That makes him a presence and a guy who can change some shots.
I would still worry about his feet, along with some parts of his game.

RE:Zydrunas Ilgauskas
even thought Z wouldnt be that defensive minded center that we really desire he would help us in the fact that he would clog up the middle and give us an inside outside game..instead of the outside inside one we have now..this would tremendously help us control leads with more efficiency.

RE: Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Wasn't Ilgauskas benched this season for half a game by Silas for not playing defense? Yeah, he would be fitting in really well...
He is also known for going on shooting sprees when he's not supposed to do it.
I think all the signs point to Dampier rather than Z or TAG.

RE:Zydrunas Ilgauskas
If we are going to get Damp. Then get him now. I think once he opts out, the chances of us getting him are slim to none.
If you are going after Big Z. Let's see if we can get Tag here at the MLE first.
IMO: We have our Backup C in Bradley. Now we need a first class 5, and preferrably a specialist for the athletic Center types as well.
Getting Tag, gets you the beef for Shaq, and Vlade but J O'Neill, Ratliff, etc kill him with their quickness. Bradley uses his length very well in spurts, but gets in foul trouble way to quickly. Damp can bang a little, and can play a little D. I like him, but even then I still think we would need to sign a Camby/Anderson/Bosh/Dalembert type C to guard the more athletic type Centers. No Nellie, you cannot move Dirk to C to guard the more athletic types - Dirk is too slow on D and has no hops.
Big Z could be our Tag with O, but his defense is questionable, and he is slow.
Upgrade the C position fast. If you can't do it with one, then do it with 2 or 3.
Nowitki can guard the 4's, or switch with Camby/Anderson type on the quicker ones.
Jamison/Howard can guard the 3's
Finley/Howard can guard the 2's
Nash/Finley can guard most 1's - Backup PG is your next upgrade needed.

Tag, Dampier, or Zwould be a clear upgrade over what we currently have. I'd be tremendously happy with any of them
