Romo Breaks Finger; Likely Out A Month
Bad Gets Worse
Romo Breaks Finger; Likely Out A Month
DallasCowboys.com Report
October 13, 2008 11:38 AM
IRVING, Texas - Losing two of the last three games is bad enough for the Dallas Cowboys.
Now things just got worse.
The beating quarterback Tony Romo took in Sunday's 30-24 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals will cost the Cowboys his services for likely a month, the sprained right fifth metacarpal he suffered on the first play of overtime turning out to be a broken finger.
For now, the Cowboys will go as is at the quarterback position, turning the 4-2 Cowboys over to veteran backup Brad Johnson, with third quarterback Brooks Bollinger serving as the No. 2 guy in Romo's absence. Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips will update the situation at his 1:30 (CDT) Monday press conference carried live on DallasCowboys.com.
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, and certainly the Cowboys will canvass the league for any available candidates, but sensed desperation certainly would drive up the price if the Cowboys are even thinking about bringing in another quarterback for the time being.
And with Johnson and Bollinger having to spend their time preparing to run the Cowboys' offense, the Cowboys might be forced to sign a practice squad quarterback to run the scout team. Richard Bartel, last year's practice squad quarterback, has worked out for several teams since being released when the club signed Bollinger to the 53-man roster but hasn't been signed and would be available for emergency practice squad duty.
Romo, who left the locker room at University of Phoenix Stadium with his right hand heavily iced and wrapped, said he injured his hand on the first play of overtime when Cardinals blitzing linebacker Chike Okeafor beat Deon Anderson's block to not only sack Romo but force a fumble Romo was able to recover for a seven-yard loss.
Romo obviously had trouble throwing his next pass with Antonio Smith in his face, one-hopping a wide open Terrell Owens on the sideline, his hand also likely throbbing at the time. Despite the loss and lack of protection, getting sacked three times, just one more time than he had been sacked in the first five games, Romo somehow was able to throw for 321 yards and finish with a 113.3 QB rating.
But for the first time in his NFL starting career, Romo will have to watch from the sideline, ending his streak of 32 consecutive starts since taking over for Drew Bledsoe in Game 7 of the 2006 season.
Johnson last started an NFL game on Dec. 17 of 2006 while playing for the Minnesota Vikings. The 40-year-old quarterback started 14 of the 15 games he played in that season, along with the final nine of the 2005 season for the Vikings.
But the 17th-year veteran has not thrown a pass for the Cowboys this season, and only threw 11 passes last year as Romo's back, all in the season-finale against Washington, having played in mop-up time only five times.

Might as well call this the "2nd Coming of Super Bowl-Winner, Brad Johnson" thread...
Wish in one hand and sh!t in the other and see which one fills up faster...

Bob and Dan just mentioned they're hearing McBriar's ankle is pretty messed up, and he may not be punting before Romo is back.

So...what do you do if your punter is hurt? Do you have to cut someone to get another one?

Yes. Which is fantastic considering we're already down a man in the secondary.
I wonder if a receiver gets the axe.

Even as I say this Wade leads off his press conference saying that Hurd reinjured his high ankle sprain and needs surgery.
Spencer has a high ankle sprain too. Good gawd!

Did Wade Philips just say that Brad Johnson had a good pre-season?

I seem to recall him having a good one. Not to mention he was out there with backups and guys who didn't even make the team. But if Wade thinks playing good in preseason equals playing good in regular season he has another thing coming.

The pain keeps coming!
Keith Davis lacerated his thumb and Flozell Adams suffered a stinger to his left shoulder (now listed as "questionable" for next week...)

Micky Spags is reporting the Felix is likely out at least two weeks, although that's preliminary becuase they haven't gotten the MRI results yet.

It's a good week to face the Rams then. Maybe Detroit would ahve been better, but the Cowboys, injured or not, should beat St. Louis.

The Cowboys just keep cell phoning themselves.
(cell phone = self owned).

Felix gone as well? We went from one of the deepest teams in the league to being one of the most injured. I guess we could be the Seahawks so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad. I expect all these questionable guys to play though. I think facing the Rams though we might see some guys get limited action.

McBriar out 6-8 weeks. I feel like throwing up. You can probably get away with a lot of those other injuries but behind Romo this might be the biggest one. Our special teams already sucks. We can't even rely on McBriar's foot anymore.

6 to 8 weeks??
It didn't look that bad. Geez.
How bad do you feel if you're the guy who was supposed to block that dude (who was it, by the way?)

Fractured foot. Uggg.
He grabbed his ankle immediately after the block, and was carted off the field. I was mentally preparing myself for this.
I wonder who we cut for a stop gap punter.

I'd feel like crap. If i'm the offensive line i'd feel the same and even worse about Romo because they were pitiful. As far as who's to blame i've heard so many names. I could've sworn it was Bobby Carpenter but some are throwing Curtis out there. It all started though with an injury to either Burnett or Spencer which put Curtis out there to begin with.

I think Carpenter whiffed on the guy that picked up the ball. Curtis is said to have whiffed on the guy that actually blocked it.

Yea that's what I want to see. I'm not sure if they can afford to cut anyone. Especially with all the injuries.

It was Curtis. At first, I thought it was Carpenter's guy. Yeah, his guy scored the TD, but didn't block the punt. The guy that blocked the punt came from the other side of the line. The guy that came through where Carpenter released wouldn't have gotten to the punter in time to block the punt. I just watched the play a couple of times.. it was 100% Curtis...

Oh okay yea I think that's the explanation I heard. Even though Curtis wasn't suppose to be out there that's just inexcusable. I don't even see how this team can even practice special teams by the way they look.

You know...at 6-8 weeks, is it possible they place McBriar on injured reserive, rather than cut someone for another punter?

I don't think Carpenter whiffed. The guy next to Carpenter basically got a shove on the guy that scored the TD and directed him at least far enough out to keep from getting there. Carpenter pretty much straight released down field.

That's what I'm thinking they'll do. He'll probably miss 6-7 games? I think they'll put him on the IR.

Oh okay yea I haven't seen a replay since yesterday. I'm sure it was Curtis' fault. I saw a guy go through Carpenter and just assumed he he was at fault.

Anybody seeing these dumb ass rumors about Kitna and Roy coming here? I hope they're just rumors because of Kitna. I don't want any part of Kitna. I'd rather go with Johnson.

Yea that's what I thought. Why would you want that lol? I mean I guess in 6-8 weeks we'd have only about 5 or 6 games left but i'd like to have him those games. Especially since getting into the playoffs is by no means guaranteed.

The trade off is you don't have to cut anyone to get a new punter if you put him on IR. And for a team with 2 hurt safeties, a hurt WR, a hurt CB, and a hurt linebacker, that might be signifant.
Who knows, maybe Hurd's surgery is going to take a long recovery and they put him on IR.
