Winter weather thread...
So is this great ice storm coming or what? I've got a 10 page paper due today, and I would really love for classes to be canceled.

Fort Worth, TX. I imagine if it hits, it should get a good chunk of DFW though.

This tidbit from Yahoo! weather is encouraging:
Quote:
Tonight: Windy...cloudy with snow, sleet or freezing rain. Cold. Low 28F. Winds NNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of precip 70%. 1 to 3 inches of snow and ice expected.
|
But I wanna see some results, dagnabbit!

btw, all of our Dallas/Ft Worth folks....be careful!
and people from up north, don't laugh at us, we don't know how to drive in the ice. It makes us tuck our tales between our legs and get in the fetal position.

How dearly I wanted to call my boss and say "I can't get out of my neighborhood". But alas, he lives in my neighborhood. He's also from up north, so he doesn't even know it's cold today.
Last night (when I was almost home from the Mav's 11th win), my car fogged up about 300 yrds before my neighborhood entrance. Apparently German cars are different from what I've had in the past, so everything I did to clear it up made it worse! It was a scary few minutes that felt like forever, but the street was quiet and I ended up rolling down my windows and whiping my inner windshield off by hand. I still managed to hit a curb, yell at my husband on the phone, get him out of the house in sandels and gym shorts and then cry him a river - all within a 5 minute span.

Last night I was in Fort Worth when some fairly heavy, cold rain hit. I had to walk about 200 yards to my car and was soaked from head to toe when I got there.
I am still recovering from it and have done precious little work today

i know its crazy, but have you tried turning on the AC while your defrost is going? someone once told me to do that and it always works for me.

Wow. Maybe being single isn't so bad after all.
Next time pull over and figure it out while stopped!
I agree with AE, when all else fails, cranking the AC up all the way cold & fast will usually do a decent job. Remember that the fog is caused by drastic temperature differences between inside and outside.
Oh and, I LOVE this weather. I'd be happy if it stayed this cold for about a month.

Well, I'm snowed in here, and my classes have been canceled. I thought it was looking pretty sketchy whether or not I would get out of classes, but that blizzard came through for me in the end.
As Borat would say, "Great success!"

First of all, its about 70 degrees here today in the frigid north (DC)
second, I know that Dallas is far south, but isn't it enough inland that it gets (and stays) cold there regularly during winter anyways?

it stays cold-ish but we don't get the ice and snow more than once or twice a year, and then only for a day or two.
tomorrow we'll be back up to 50 degrees.

Don't talk to me about a f-ing blizzard. This is going to be my first winter any more north than Arkansas. I'm terrified.
PS: Another thing I miss about Dallas: they shut down all the schools & you don't have to go to work if there is the tiniest bit of ice on the roads. Swear to God, they told me not to go into work one day last December & it was freaking 70 degrees. Everyone tells me they never cancel anything in Boston, even though there's going to be 3 feet of snow for about 4 straight months. Gah!

Ames, there's a big difference between driving on ice and driving in snow... People from the northeast wouldn't be any better at driving on ice than anyone down here in Texas. There's simply no good way to drive on ice.

No, I know, I've done the driving in ice thing. (In a mini-van that year my parents sold my car w/out telling me when I went to college, too!) But they'll shut everything down even if it's like a hint of ice. And I LOVE it! I'm just whining cause my subway stop is above ground, I just don't want to wait outside for like 20 minutes when it's -20 out.
How's this for ironic, btw? It was almost 60 degrees in Boston today. I wore short sleeves.

I figured a bump was necessary. Crazy weather we're having, huh?
I thought we would be done with our snow chances by now. Looks like global warming struck again.

Um, I've been in Texas for 17 years now and 9/10 times it snows it's usually at the end of February or beginning of March... We're not in the clear until Spring Break rolls around for the students (hell, I remember getting several days of snow & ice DURING Spring Break in my junior year of high school, and that was before the words "global warming" were in our vocabulary...)

Convenient how we can blame every problem on global warming, terrorism, Bush, or the liberal media...
What ever happened to the good old days of "blaming it on the Devil"??? (I already listed Bush - he doesn't count!)

Why do you think the Mavs lost the last games against the good teams?

Well, Avery thinks it's the liberal media's fault!

Well I've been in Texas 22 years now, and I can't honestly remember the last time it snowed in March. Maybe it's just me. I do remember it snowing in February a few years ago right on Valentine's Day. That's not too odd. But March seems a little late to me. Not saying it's never happened, just that it's happened maybe 2 or 3 times tops in my 22 years in this great state.

Yeah, I probably should have blamed it on Bush too. After all, he was apparently the one who caused Hurricane Katrina with his climate controlling powers.

Yeah it snowed in March of 03...I was in the dorms at UNT and I had a big program due the first week of march, and God gave me an extra week because classes were all kinds of cancelled that week.
It just took me 2 hours to get from Addison to north Lewisville on side streets. It's dangerous out there. People are driving like idiots. TAKE IT SLOW!!!!

Is there that much ice out there? I see snow where I live, but not much ice on the roads. The roads just look really wet. Is this not the case elsewhere in the metroplex?
