How many former segregationists and racists who made life long pledges to keep negroes from drinking from white drinking fountains defected to the Republican party where they were warmly embraced (do you really want to know?)

Me too. Isn't it great? From when Harry Truman signed te executive order in 1948 to forcibly integrate the armed forces, or Attourney General RFK bringing fourth over 50 lawsuits in response to violations of black voting rights, Lyndon Johnson signing the civil rights acts of 1964 and 1968 and the voting rights act of 1965.
Of course, it is a bittersweet victory because by championing civil rights, the Democrats lost much of the racist south, but never fear! The Republicans and their southern strategy were more than willing to appease the racist sentiments of a South angry about blacks being equal to them, driving them into the arms of the Republican party. It makes perfect sense that Strom Thurmond, the man responsible for the longest filibuster in history (against te civil rights act) and Jesse Helms, who's campaign was convicted of violating the voting rights act and referred to the University of North Carolina as 'The University of Niggers and Comunists" would find their homes in GOP arms.

I know which party was responsible for the emancipation proclamation

Yes, at least we can concentrate on the GOP glory years, when they had a soul. They actually enforced 2-3 key pieces of legislation. Of course when iot came between championing equal rights for blacks and furthering their own corrupt agenda, they chose the latter by participating in the compromise of 1877, ceding the south to segregationist control in exchange for political support (hey kinda like the southern strategy of nearly a hundred years later) oh the mighty and principled GOP!. The Republicans haven't been behind any major civil rights legislation in 2 centuries. They went from the party of the emancipation proclamation, to the party of men (Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater in particular) who actually opposed the Civil rights movement and the party that objected to making MLKs birthday a national holiday. What a shameful legacy.

Since you don't know much about the Democratic party, than I don't think you do. Nor do you know much about your own party which can better be described as "If you don't make it or are disadvantaged, it's completely your own doing and nothing to do with your race or gender"

I know which party believes that all people can succeed and don't need a handout but a handup..

LOL, the 'handup, not a handout' was coined and supported by the Democrats dummy, primarily Al From and Bruce Reed of the DLC. The GOP, immediatly upon hearing it, denounced it as Third Way socialist rhetoric. The GOP doesen't believe in 'handups', at least so long as the governent provides it. Sorry, no score.
