Juan Gonzalez Named Most Valuable Puss

Associated Press

Texas Rangers outfielder Juan Gonzalez probably won't play again this season due to a lingering right calf injury, team physician Dr. John Conway said Friday night.

Gonzalez has been out since July 23, and Rangers general manager John Hart on Thursday questioned the slugger's willingness to play through the injury, called a "strain" by the team.

But Conway described the injury as "a tear."

"That's what a strain really is," he said, adding, "It's unlikely he's going to play again this year."

Conway and Rangers trainer Jaime Reed have said that draining a pocket of fluid near the calf would speed Gonzalez's recovery, but Gonzalez declined the procedure.

Conway said even if Gonzalez had the fluid drained immediately, the recovery would take at least three weeks, which would mean the two-time AL MVP would be unable to return until the last week of the season.

"It's probably going to be difficult for him to come back at this late date," Hart said.

Alan Nero, Gonzalez's agent, was critical of the team earlier Friday for Hart's recent statements to the Dallas Morning News questioning Gonzalez's desire to come back from the injury.

In a news release, Nero called the Rangers' handling of the Gonzalez situation "reprehensible."

But Nero and Hart met Friday night and called a truce.

"Juan has been very confused," Nero said. "This is a serious injury and there hasn't been any focus on that. We're disappointed that his integrity has been at issue."

"We recognize the extent of the injury," Conway said.

Gonzalez got a third opinion Thursday when Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., confirmed the original diagnosis by team doctors two weeks ago that Gonzalez had a pocket of fluid near the injury that should be drained.

Nero said Gonzalez will probably have the fluid drained in the next few days.
