Source: Artest looks to be bound for L.A.
By Sam Amico
Dec. 28, 2005
Indiana is nearing a three-team trade that would send swingman Ron Artest to the Los Angeles Lakers, a league source has told ProBasketballNews.com.
Meanwhile, Lakers forward Devean George would end up in Indiana.
The third team involved in the proposed trade is the Toronto Raptors, according to the source. The Raptors would send Jalen Rose to Los Angeles -- and in return receive Pacers forward Austin Croshere and at least one player from the Lakers.
The source added that George and an undetermined player from the Raptors -- or perhaps a draft pick -- would be to dealt to the Pacers.
"Basically, it's Artest for Devean George, with the Raptors getting involved to make it work financially," the source said. "When and if it happens, this will be a trade that consists of plenty of throw-ins."
Three weeks ago, Artest told the Indianapolis Star that he wanted to be traded. He later apologized to his teammates and told management he would like to remain with the team. But Pacers president Larry Bird told The Indianapolis Star on Monday that he felt "betrayed" by Artest, and said the Pacers will indeed trade him.
Artest has been inactive since his comments about wanting to be traded, which came after he was injured against Dallas on Dec. 6. Since then, the Pacers have been flooded with trade requests.
Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh told the Associated Press on Wednesday the team had narrowed its options down from about 10 teams this week, but did not indicate when a trade might occur.
Artest averaged 19.4 points and 4.9 rebounds through 16 games this season. He was suspended for 73 games last year after the well-documented brawl during a game in Detroit.
Croshere is averaging 8.1 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Pacers, while Rose is scoring 9.6 points in just 25 minutes per game -- his lowest averages in both categories in nine seasons.
George is also near his career lows in scoring (5.6 ppg) and field-goal percentage (38 percent).
The source said he was not given a timetable as to when the proposed trade might take place. "I hear they are very close to finalizing everything, he said, "but it sounds like there are a few kinks that still need to be worked out."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

No kidding. Artest and Rose? That's just sick.
I wasn't sure about the site but thought I'd post it here to get reactions.
I'm not sure how this would work. Someone who's better with numbers will have to give it a go.

Man, if Devan George is all they can get, I don't understand why they don't just do a pure salary dump. Although they might be, getting rid of Croshere, depending on what comes back from Toronto.

If that's all they get, the Mavs NEED to get into the talks....hell, just to keep him away from making another team a contender in the west.

the news from them is a pile of crap.
why on earth would indy just ask for george? george is an incredible spare. it doesnt fit with anything they've been asking for. if the price of artest is just george, call up indy and offer stackhouse.

No kidding if this report is true then watch out for the Lakers.
Smush
Kobe
Artest
Odom
Mihm
with Rose (who I think would be pretty effective in thhe triangle) and Kwame coming of the bench. This can't really the best Indy can get can it.
Be afraid, very afraid.

Wait a second here. This doesn't work under the cap.
I'm to busy to realgm it so I will estimate.
Lakers receive:
Rose: 15MM
Artest: 7MM
Give up
George: 5MM
Now if they aremoving Odom too, then maybe. Otherwise I don't see how it is possible. Any thoughts.

The article did say it would have to include "multiple throwins", but I agree. I don't see what salaries the Lakers have that could make this work.

Breaking news by Sam Amico.
Larry Bird may be a hick from French Lick, but he ain't stupid enough to trade Ron Artest for Devean George.

This is a huge steaming pile of bull honkey. As if Indiana would trade their second best player (maybe their best), the former defensive player of the year, for Devean f*cking George.

Man thats a crazy trade scenario, but if LA were to get artest and Rose, they would be very tough to stop. No way is Bird going to make that trade unless they get odom in return

yeah #'s don't add up at all, but It'd be a lot easier to hate the Lakers if they got Artest.

Not sure about the calls, but since Jerry West left they have been making very bad trades.

Agreed, bad trades in the realm of "in all of NBA history". The Lakers being turned over to Bitch Kupcake is like that movie Tommy Boy. The difference is the movie Tommy Boy had a happy ending.

Are Warriors first in line to acquire Pacers' Artest?
http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/...s/13554715.htm

CONTRA COSTA TIMES
OAKLAND - Word is, the only thing holding up the Warriors' trading for beleaguered Indiana Pacers All-Star forward Ron Artest is tonight's game.
See, the Pacers don't want to trade Artest and then have to face him right away so they're waiting until after tonight's game. This way, Indiana wouldn't have to deal with Artest until Feb. 10 when the Warriors play at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Sounds convincing, right?
"Whatever," Warriors guard Jason Richardson said with a smirk on his face. "I don't listen to no rumors."
Whether through rumors or media reports, the Warriors consistently have been mentioned as being among the teams pursuing a trade for Artest, who wore out his welcome in Indiana last month by asking to be traded.
Neither Warriors executive vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin nor general manager Rod Higgins would comment for this article. It is team policy not to discuss trade speculation or players on other teams. But there is reason to believe there might be some truth to the rumors.
Anonymous sources from other teams are leaking information to various media outlets that the Warriors are seriously involved. Plus, Higgins and Mullin stayed in Oakland during the recent road trip. At least one of them usually accompanies the team on the road.
Speculation involving the Warriors has included power forward Troy Murphy, small forward Mike Dunleavy, swingman Mickael Pietrus and rookie Ike Diogu.
The new collective bargaining agreement makes Dunleavy hard to deal. The five-year, $44 million extension he signed just before the season began takes effect next season, but it increases the dollar figure assigned to Dunleavy from $4.5 million to about $8 million for any team that trades for him this year. Hence, trading Dunleavy almost assuredly would require a third team with salary cap space.
The same holds true for Murphy, but for a different reason. He's hard to move because he's considered a base year compensation player. According to the CBA, when a team over the salary cap gives its player a raise of 12 percent or more, as the Warriors did Murphy before last season, that team can get back only half the player's contract value in a trade for the first year. So, though Murphy is making $7.36 million this season, the Warriors could get back only $3.68 million.
"I haven't spoken with anyone from Golden State," Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, said. "Whoever wants him, that's where he'll go. If Golden State wants him, he'll be happy to play with Golden State. I don't think it would be a problem fitting in there."
The Pacers have said they want to get a deal done soon but have grown increasingly patient. The Indianapolis Star reported Pacers president Larry Bird said he'd prefer to trade Artest to a Western Conference team.
"Any time you deal a player, you would like him to go out of the conference," Bird told the Star. "We're looking at the West, but if it's the East, that's how it's going to be. Whether we get a draft choice or a player, we're going to make sure it's the right deal. We've done enough to back Ronnie. We're in a position where we have to protect the franchise now."
With the Warriors trying to snap an 11-season playoff drought, Artest is the kind of player who can make them a real contender in the Western Conference. He certainly would help their struggling defense.
That might be enough to have Mullin working to acquire the troubled All-Star. Unless, of course, that smoke is billowing from nothing.
Notes: Warriors center Adonal Foyle (back spasms) is questionable for tonight's game. Foyle, who lost his starting job to Diogu, missed the final two games of the road trip, at Houston and at Memphis. But he said Tuesday he was feeling better. The Warriors said he will be a game-time decision.
