GDT game 29 - Mavs (8-21) at Clips (22-8) 9:30 NBATV/FSSW
Mavs stay on the road. Unfortunately Griffin is out and Paul went down in the third quarter last night. It's also a B2B for the Clips.
Barea - questionable
Dirk - questionable
Bogut - out
Mostly have to start a better thread that isn't filled with awful conjecture about trading Barbes

Gotta love a season where the wins are good and the losses are better.
I'm enjoying watching Carlisle coaching up the young guys. Finney-Smith is already as good as Aminu, and Anderson has a lot of Jae Crowder in him-lots of hustle and inconsistent scorer. We are clearly better with guys like JJB on the court, but its fun to watch kids like Gibson and Hammond trying to figure it out.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everybody.

No Griffin, but what's more important, no Paul. I fear we might win.

The Otter Angles are coming down the Christmas tree of success in a hurry tonight... Dirk plays... Dirk by himself takes the Otter Angel ornaments down and out!
Mavs - 104
Otter Angels - 100

Why can't we just tank this season? The Mavs look far too entertaining tonight. Don't they realize that the Clippers are shorthanded? We're not at 100%, but we're lacking J.J. They're lacking Blake. We could storm back and take 8th, but can we honestly beat the Warriors? I'd rather take that high lotto pick.
I totally forgot to mention CP3. I don't like him, but I should still acknowledge how he's not present.

17 PTS and 4 REB at the half... Is Dirk back?
13 PTS and 3 REB at the half... Is Barnes still rolling?

If Dirk stays healthy and Barnes continues his ascent to stardom, then I'm afraid tanking might not happen.

No better way for this game to end than on two missed VAJ FTs and a game winner by Harrison Barnes.

Judging by Dirk's postgame interview, Dirk isn't interested in the notion of tanking at all. Predictably, he just wants to see the team get healthy so they can "make a run at it." Never change, Dirk.

Can't wait to watch the replay tomorrow. Dirk looked pretty spry out there. Was he on minute restriction?

Honestly, I don't get this tanking mentality at all. I think it's bullshit. Losing on purpose is totally against my understanding of sportsmanship. Maybe it's because I'm German and I'm not used to a system where bad efforts are being rewarded but I think even if I was American I would think exactly the same. You may lose games but at least you gotta keep trying to win. If the Mavs seriously considered tanking i would see it as an insult to Dirk and his hard work over the years.
So hell yeah I'm happy about the win against the Clippers!

It's a crap system, but it is what it is, and unfortunately, unlike the NFL, NHL or MLB drafts, your chances of drafting a true difference maker go down significantly after the first three picks. Another problem is the lack of parity in the NBA. In this league, you basically cannot win without a top 50 all-time player, but actually, more like top 30.
Out of the last 40+ champions, only the Pistons did not have a player like that on their roster. The other problem is that not only you need a top 30-ever player to win it all, there is a very, very high probability that you have to draft that player. So in reality, you cannot win an NBA championship without sucking at least one year, and drafting that true difference maker.
The way our team is constructed right now, we lack that franchise player. We have one player who one day might be a really good second option, but even he pales in comparison to other great second options, like a Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving (whichever you think of as the 2nd option), a Kyle Lowry, a Durant (duh), Thompson, Blake Griffin, etc. etc.
So at this point, we need a franchise player, and we need him badly. It all starts there. And the reason why I don't agree with a lot of posters here, who say that our role players improving is such a great thing for us, because it significantly reduces our chances to draft that potential franchise player. This is just a fact, a dry, mathematical fact.
It is very possible that being mediocre this year - if we end up being mediocre - instead of being really bad, will sentence this franchise for a decade of treadmill status. If they don't tank, or be bad in a year like this, where everything was set, and no other team really goes after it, you think they will do it next year?
No, they will sign other quality role players, and they will win around 40-44 games. And if you think that Barnes will ever lead this team - as the best player - to even 50 wins, you are utterly clueless about basketball and player development in general. No offense (and this is not directed at anybody, just a general statement).
Again, I think the system sucks, but it is what it is, and without a Chicago Bulls kind of lottery miracle, what they are doing right now, will severely hurt this franchise's immediate future.

Even without CP3 and Griffin, the Clips are far more talented than the Mavs. After all, we started an undrafted rookie and a 30 year old European center. They bring Jamal Crawford off the bench. The fact is, our kids are getting better, and that's fun to watch. If he stays healthy, Dirk will only have to play 50 games, and if he plays like he did tonight, the Mavs just may not suck badly enough to get that great pick.
I don't think anyone in the Mavs organization is willing to tank, if there is a chance to make the playoffs. Having the toughest schedule at the beginning should mean one of the easier ones at the end. So enjoy the wins...we may have a lot more coming.

I don't think anyone here is saying the term "tank" as intentionally losing but just using it as a quick term for tanking to the bottom of the standings by simply being not very good. You could tell what that win meant to those guys, you can't say intentionally losing is in any way remotely a good idea after seeing how those guys reacted to winning that game. Clips without BG32 and CP3 are a bunch of guards who can get hot and a mental midget at center. Not surprised we won, didn't expect it still but not surprised either.
and cuck the flippers.

Thoughts in no order
-Barnes is so calm and steady, really a lot like Dirk.
-The difference was our work on the offensive glass.
-Deandre is utterly useless on offense without Paul, so satisfying to watch his ugly mug after the game
-I've been a proponent of tanking (i.e. playing to win but at the same time giving the youngins heavy minutes) because I don't think we have the raw talent to win in the playoffs... I still don't, but even with a pick that's around 15-20 and a good FA pickup or two I think we can be there next year

It is a complete waste for us to not have a top 5 pick next year. For us to not take advantage of this situation... It makes no sense to me. I get that we dont want to foster a culture where losing is acceptable. This is one season. We are in prime position to get value for vets on expiring contracts and add a top PG for years to come.
We must trade D Will and Bogut.

I have a bad feeling...healthy this team is just too good to stink...we are going to fight the Blazers for #8 or #9 and that sucks.
We are also way too good to finish behind Nets/Sixers/Suns/Lakers/Heat...

Just finished watching the full game this morning. I laughed out loud watching Deandra's ritual before shooting FTs. How pathetic. Thanks tho!

You can only live in the now with this stuff. It feels a heckuva lot better winning that game with what looks like a healthy Dirk and Barnes hitting the game winner. I want a top 5 pick too, but I also want to see these guys start improving. Improvement will equate to wins sooner or later. It's just the nature of the deal.
Honestly though, the Barnes singing has prevented total disaster for this franchise. At least we have something that players might want to play with now come free agency.

Nowitzki was impressed by the way Barnes ran the play he's used for years.
"Some of the same stuff that we've run for me for years, we run for him now," Nowitzki said. "That high-post (isolation), he's mastered it. As a go-to guy, you got to have a great mid-range game because you're not going to get an open 3 to win and you're not going to get all the way to the basket to win. So you got to be able to create mid-range stuff and he's a master at it."
Said Barnes: "He reminds me frequently that he wrote the playbook. He lets me know it."

But you can't win in this league without a franchise player. Heck, you can't win without a "top 30 ever" kind of player. More wins only hurts you if you are not a contender. I hate this, but it's the NBA.
