Or the receiver can think that you are shooting the ball then therefore he will turn and not look at the pass waiting for the rebound.

Yeah, I watched it a few times (DVR) and he made eye contact with Bass before he went up. I believe his thought was to draw the other defender and then pass, but if he didn't draw the other defender then he was gonna shoot it. Being that clsoe to the basket he wasn't going to draw the other guy over if he didn't go up. IMO it was a good play but not his best as Ortegel said. Him taking it to the rim was refreshing, and he played good defense.
