Default Alonzo Mourning

I know I will get flame for this.

Yes, he's old, but he's an unrestricted FA. He is still servicable for 20 mins/game. He is still very good as a defender/block shot/rebounder. He proved that during the finals. We could offer him the MLE.

In other words, there are far better options to go after than Zo....

Besides, for Zo it's either the Heat or Retirement.

Zo was always 1 game away from retirement... I am utterly in disbelief that he recovered to the level he did from that kidney problem.

Looking through that list I saw quite a few names of guys that I had just assumed had already passed away due to the effects of the aging process. Just looking at the unrestricted guys there doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot useful players here. I am sure the Mavs can find 1 or 2 guys somewhere. Just might have to play with the guys they already got.

Naw, he'll either stay with the Heat or retire. I'd expect we'd resign Benga over signing Zo.

Is that why he had kidney issues? Hmmmm....I don't know about that.

This disease he got was pretty rare....He was fortunate to have his cousin donate.

Mourning can take the idiot walker with him to where-ever he retires to. The quicker the better.

Spurs unable to land Mourning

Web Posted: 07/09/2006 12:00 AM CDT

Johnny Ludden
Express-News Staff Writer

The Spurs hope to finish their search for a new center within the next few days after making a hard, yet unsuccessful, push to lure Alonzo Mourning from Miami.

Aware that Mourning planned to re-sign with the Heat or retire, the Spurs knew they would have a difficult time convincing him to leave Florida, where his family has been settled for much of his 13-year career. But Spurs officials were initially encouraged this past week when Mourning showed interest in joining them.

The Spurs' optimism, however, had diminished by Saturday afternoon. Mourning is now expected to return to the Heat and help them defend their NBA title.

Spurs officials also have looked at the available big men in Europe, as well as trade options, but will probably sign someone from the small pool of NBA free-agent centers this week.

Utah's Jarron Collins and Memphis' Lorenzen Wright are the top remaining unrestricted free-agent centers. New York's Jackie Butler and Charlotte's Melvin Ely are young with potential, but each is a restricted free agent, which would force the Spurs to wait up to a week to see if their offer would be matched.

Indiana's Scot Pollard, Boston's Michael Olowokandi, Charlotte's Jake Voskuhl, Denver's Francisco Elson (restricted), Toronto's Loren Woods and Chicago's Luke Schenscher (restricted) are other options.

The Spurs tried unsuccessfully to sign Mourning a few seasons ago. He turns 37 in February and is three years removed from a kidney transplant, but that didn't deter the Spurs from again seeking his services.

Mourning averaged 7.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.66 blocks — the third-most in the NBA — in 65 games for the Heat last season. He remains one of the league's best interior defenders and would have been a good fit next to Tim Duncan.

Because Duncan also will play some center and Lithuanian big man Robertas Javtokas will help back up the position, the Spurs could have used Mourning at the start of each half and kept his minutes in check. Signing Mourning to a two-year contract with a healthy raise from the $1.1 million he made last season also would have fit well with the Spurs' financial plans: Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili are the team's only players currently under contract after the 2007-08 season

Wow, if he went to the Spurs, watch out. That's great that he's not going there. Phew!

Mourning did not have kidney problems because of pill popping. Ignorance abounds it seems. Good Lord....MT was even correct.

Yeah wasn't it just kidney failure? I don't think it was from drugs.

I thought mournings kidney disease was a byproduct of anit inflammatories which are in no way illegal or should ever be mentioned as popping pills. i hate zo as he is a pos but to act like he brought the kidney troubles on himself is wrong.

Mourning has claimed that his doctors told him that anti-inflammatories contributed to his disease. Doctors agree that prolonged use of anti-inflammatories can cause kidney disease.

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...gewanted=print

So yes, it is very likely that Mourning wrecked his career and almost killed himself by taking a performance enhancing drug.. which is exactly what anti-inflammatories are.

Some players choose to live healthy lives and avoid the risk of dangerous drugs (like Fred Hoiberg ... see here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ins...nflammatories/) .

Other less honorable individuals choose to try to cheat the healing process and roll the dice. Looks like Mourning crapped out.

Zo's an arrogant jackass and I simply hate him, no i'm not bitter about him pretty much beating us but i'm still very bitter about his unprofeswsional behaviour way back when traded to Toronto and whining his way to sign with the Heat. You would think a veteran like him would have a little more courtesy to that organization. No respect to him (or Vince Carter, damn lazy slacking all-star) whatsoever.

pill popping. what i mean is he took too many for his own good. when u look on the box of advil and tylenol and all that and it says take 2 pills every 6 hours or whatever the dosage is then you don't do more then that. Zo took way more than he should have. thats why his kidneys failed.

Speaking from experience (my wife is suffering from kidney failure), Zo's problems likely did not come from over usage of anti inflamatories, but prolonged use under a doctors care. That is one of the major contributors to my wife's current condition. I wont go in to the way doctors today play Russian roulette with there patients well being. Just inform yourself if taking any long term medication.
