Default Who SHOULD the mavs be going after?

Our new philosophy as KG had mentioned is to get younger and more athletic...so

I think we should try and make a move for Stromile Swift.

Maybe Memphis would take L8s expring contract and a pick for him??

If we are going to get just one position player this year it needs to be a center and not a PF playing C.

EDIT: To answer you directly, if I could chose a younger center and make the other team trade him to me, it would be Magliore.

A lot of people - mostly the media - are saying the Mavs need Dampier. And I even remember something about a NVE/Dampier to Dallas rumor. I wouldn't mind NVE nursing Devin Harris, but I think Dampier is fool's gold.

How about Shaq? Opps. Never mind.

I'm pretty sure Dampier is nothing but fool's gold but he's still better than anything we have currently on this roster. To answer the question of the thread the Mavs should go after any serviceable to good player who doesn't play the 2,3,4 or 1. Get a big man in here Dallas. You missed out on Shaq but don't miss out on Damp.

In reality the Mavs need to sit tight for awhile and trim roster. Ideally, we need to add two positional role players (not more swingmen) while subtracting 4 that don't fit with this team.

1. An experienced, short term contract, seven footer with long arms who can run the floor with the rest of the Mavs, block some shots, put a few back, and harass the other team's center would be ideal to add to a center roation including Bradley/Benga. Someone who has played in the West and who has played on a team similar to the Mavs......

2. An experienced PG who can keep the tempo going for 15-20 minutes a game. Short term contract. Someone who can get the young guys settled down and the vets involved in the game. Someone who understands his role is a transitional one.

Memphis really likes Swift. I don't think they would trade him to Dallas. If they did, it wouldn't be for peanuts.

No, I am not seeing Swift in my crystal ball. Besides, he doesn't fit the job description I placed.

Not only would Memphis not trade him to Dallas, they simply will not trade WITH Dallas period. Last thing they want is for us to get better.

they couldn't trade him anyways...he's a free agent.

as far as point guards go...there's always dana barros. hah. seriously though, if toronto signs strickland and dallas goes after carter, maybe they could ask for him in the deal as well?

In going with the topic of who SHOULD we be going after?

At the end of the year, I said 1) starting Center 2) backup PG

So we drafted a backup PG, and got AJ, but lost the starting PG..........now we need a starting PG and a starting C.

Plan A .......... Damp (SNT) and NVE for Walker, and others (preferably 2-3 others)
Plan B .......... Big Z - what is it that Cleveland would have to have for him?
Plan C .......... Call NO - what would it cost for Armstrong or Davis and McGloire?
Plan D .......... Dalembert and Robinson for Walker & others
Plan F .......... Battie or Diop
Plan G .......... Ostertag
Plan H .......... Anderson (SNT)
Paln I ........... Kidd -- hope Benga can play tough defense

Ah, the dreaded 7-post (I have no idea what that's called - septuple?). Of course, the worst thing about it is that you're wrong. Free agents can be traded via a sign and trade deal.

I think that we should go after Bradley and Fortson......they are over there.....at the end of the bench.

(or maybe go after a coach who will play the centers that we have). How big is Wallace and the Piston's centers; they seemed to do o.k. against Shaq and the Lakers. Did we throw away last year by playing small ball and not using Bradly/Fortson?

they couldn't trade him straight-up, which is what everyone seemed to be proposing. I know how free agency works, thanks for playing.

post-padding at it's absolute worst. haha jk.

But back on topic, there are a select few centers that the mavs need to make a move for, preferably using a few of their 8,000 guards right now. Dampier, Ostertag, etc. At this point, we're probably not gonna land an all-star center so I just want one that doesn't suck.

The Mavs simply must move Walker. If not, it'll be too tempting for nellie to play him at the center spot again this season. Walker will get 25-30 minutes a game and the Mavs will simply be outmanned on the defensive side of the ball.

Who should the Mavs get? I think they take a long, clean,...hard look at Dampier and maybe Thomas.

My goodness, was it ever disconerting to hear Donnie on the radio today talking about the center spot and mentioning "the flexibility of Antoine and Dirk." I thought they had come right out and said that the Walker-at-center experiment was a disaster. To even mention the possibility of Walker chipping in there this year just makes you cringe.

I can agree. It was disheartening. I slumped down in my seat and urine began trickling down my leg when I heard this from Donnie.

try to trade for more expiring contracts..i don't see anyone on the market worth the mavs time right now..even if they got dampier, nellie won't play him for more than 15 mins because he can't shoot 3s

might as well play bradley-25 mins, mbenga-15 mins, pavel - 8 mins at the center position..that's 18 fouls when you play miami and bradley can guard duncan/garnett in the post(he has shown it before but nellie still won't play him)

stromile swift is a good player who could probably give 15/10/3 bpg but mavs have no room for him..he's probably looking for a team that he can start on..much like al harrington

I like the idea of playing Bradley/Benga/Pavel at the Center. But has everybody forgotten about Tyson Chandler??? He could be our starting C and backup power-foward. Should be much easier to get then Shaq was!

I haven't forgot about Chandler.

It appears some have forgotten about Christian Laettner, though. He's a solid vet who's played very well here before. He's not the defensive presence we need, but as a fallback plan, he's not too bad. The production that a Bradley/Laettner/Mbenga rotation would give you is not that far behind what a guy like Dampier is capable of. In some cases, like shot blocking and mid-rage shooting, the Mavs current rotation is better. Of course, drop off comes mainy in the fields of back to the basket scoring, rebounding and "banging".

Laett at least matches the defensive presence of LaFrentz while on the floor and he does have some ability to block shots on the strong and weak side.

Big Z is who we need. He is a shot blocker 2.45bpg, a rebounder 8pg, and he is a lowpost threat 48 percent field goal percentage. Yes he has limitations but he is also 7'3" 260 pound beast.

If we get someone in reason, I agree with you.

Big z over Dampier and Tag

I kind of like the idea of Z as well, I just don't like the idea of his foot trouble and the fact that his increased defense and blocked shots last year may have been a fluke... but overall I'd say he's worth going after.

I want Z because if he flops we just have to keep him on board for 1 year.

If we get damp we are stuck with him for 5
