That pic is from their last off-season as teammates. And probably explains why they are both better now.

MavsX, I like you. I like your style. I was particularly fond of your work in the "Mavs to the WC finals" thread you started in the General Mavs forum. I found your reply "i like where your heads at" in that thread to be greatness on a number of levels, some rather subtle.
And now, with this thread you have confirmed my suspicion that you harbor a genuine sort of panache that is much to my liking.
So to answer your question, this moron thinks that Miami is as legit a contender as it comes in the East. I will go ahead and toss New Jersey and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Indiana into the mix of what I feel is an Eastern Conference more wide open than an NCAA tournament. If I could sell Detroit stock short, I'd be ponying up right about now. My gut says they don't make it to the NBA Finals.
If you could somehow blend Antawn Jamison and Antoine Walker into one human body, you might end with the most destructive low-post presence the NBA has seen since the likes of Mark Aguirre. Or...maybe not. But still, Antawn Walker would be far, far, far from the worst to ever play in the league.
Now, Antoine Walker, he's not the worst either. He's just very misunderstood.

Sort of off subject, but does anyone else think Indiana is gonna be for real next season? I thought they would be the best team in the east this year, and I think they probably would've been had it Artest not screwed them over again. But Peja seems to have rediscovered himself in Indiana. As long as they can stay healthy, I can see them being a 60 win team next year.

Peja is a FA and it depends on how him and JO mesh and/or if the sign him. I was with you on thinking they would be great this year(i predicted the mavs would play them in the finals in the preseason predictions thread) but they just seem to kind of be the anti detroit imo though. Detroit has had everything go right for 3 years. I mean they havent even had a player have a sprained ankle. That is ridiculously good luck. Indy is the opposite. They look like they should be awesome and i always get sucked into thinking they will be but something happens. Also JO has become the new glass man in the nba.

Miami is a bad team in disguise. They are in a weak conference and it really is a toss up on who will be the 2nd team in the ECF. I hope and pray we get to the Finals and have to play Miami. That would be great.
And Indiana will always look good in the offseason and find some way to blow it. They always have and they always will.

I pretty much echo mush the opinions here in regards to Miami...they are just a mixed bad of ill fitting parts...Eastern teams better than Miami: Det, Indy, NJ.....

I scoff at the idea that Miami is a legitimate contender.
That doesn't necessarily mean, however, that they can't win the East.

chum chum--haha..thanks for your insight. I look forward to disussing the mavericks in the near future with you. I think my distaste for Walker stems from when he was with the mavs a couple years back, i remember him choking and just doing alot of things to a team that was not blending together very well. Well anyway...until the next time...

the only reason why i brought it up, was because sportscenter was making a big deal abou them winning like 9 in a row, or something, i guess with detroits record i just assume they will take the east, that being said..it is clear that i am retarded.

What? That's crazy talk. They "blew it" every year Isiah coached them, I'll give you that. But did they "blow it" when Larry Bird coached them to the finals? Did they "blow it" in 03-04 when they had the best record in the league? Yeah, they lost to Detroit, but seeing as how the Pistons were the eventual champs, it hardly seems like they "blew it." They sure gave the Pistons more of a fight than the Lakers did.
Always have and always will? WTF are you talking about? If anything, they've been absolutely remarkable considering the circumstances. They probably should've been a lottery team last year after the suspensions and injuries, but they still managed a playoff spot and even go to the second round after beating the higher-seeded Celtics.
They probably would've had a better record than Miami last year had it not been for the brawl. And I'd wager they'd be powerhouses in the East this year again if Artest hadn't screwed them over again. Ron Artest is the one that "blows it," not the Indiana Pacers. Tell me, what reason do you have to believe that Indiana will "blow it" next season now that Artest is in Sacramento?

They were predicted to win the East 2 years ago, they got to the finals and BLEW it. I seem to remeber at least 3 people gettin in that fight, not just Artest. They are predicted every year to be great and they find some way to not be great. I don't care about injuries, look at the Mavs, they are still great even though half their team is gone. I don't know what the fascination is with Indiana, if it was because Bird was coaching them or that J Oneil was on the team or what, but I am sick of hearing every year how great they are going to be then end up being the 4th or 5th best team in the East.

Miami is a joke, there are 4 teams better than them in the West and now there are 2 teams clearly better in the East.

indiana will never win a title with Jermaine O'Neal..He is as injury prone as Baron Davis and vastly overrated.
Indiana should trade O'Neal and a pick to Minnesota for Garnett.

I suppose it's telling that my distaste for Walker, tempered as it is, stems from his time before and his time after his Mavericks tenure.

I actually like walker. He was one of the few players who took it upon himself to put his hand over heart during the national anthem. He and shawn.
But he's just not a very good basketball player.

Sportsbook is giving 3-1 for Miami to win it all.
The Mavs are currently getting 10-1.

Miami will be in the finals automatically against detroit.
Mavs have to beat the sk*rts to get there. It's tougher. What's the sk*rts book?

What, because they lost? The way I remember, they were predicted to win the east well before the Pistons picked up Rasheed. That changed the balance of power in the East completely. Those were two very evenly matched teams. The Pistons turned out to be better that year, and they proved it by stomping the Lakers.
Quote:

They were sticking up for their teammate. Not saying it was right, Artest was solely responsible for that incidident. Tell me, do you think Peja Stojakavic or David Harrison are going to charge into the stands throwing punches at the fans sometime next season?

They "find some way not to be great".... Uh, well Artest caused a riot at a basketball game and was suspended for the entire season. Losing the defensive player of the year who also happens to be your second scoring option kind of hurts. You don't care about injuries? Look at the Mavs? Dude, when the Pacers' injuries have usually been to Jermaine and Jamall Tinsley. Jermaine's their franchise player, Tinsley's their point guard. The Mavs haven't lost Dirk for an extended period of time, or Terry for that matter, so I hardly think the two situations compare.
The "fascination" with Indiana is that they have a very talented, deep roster, and a great coach. The past two years they ended up being the 4th or 5th best team because their two best players were gone. Like I said, they were incredible considering the circumstances.
