Default GDT: Golden State @ Dallas , December 7, 7:30 p.m. central

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=301207006

The Dallas Mavericks continue to roll, but surprisingly, its their defense that has been the catalyst.

The Mavericks will look to extend their winning streak to 10 games and make it four straight victories against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night at American Airlines Center.

Dallas (16-4) continues to play outstanding defense, allowing 92.2 points per contest while limiting opponents to 43.1 percent shooting -- both among the best marks in the league.

"That's our identity now, we hang our hat on it (defense)," said Jason Terry. "That started two years ago and we bought into it. That's the biggest thing we have going for us now."

That commitment to defense was evident again Saturday night. The Mavericks trailed Sacramento 99-90 with just over five minutes remaining before clamping down and outscoring the Kings 15-4 en route to a 105-103 victory.

"I remember it was 99-90 and we were able to lock them down from that point on," Tyson Chandler said. "We were able to close it out. This was huge one for us coming off a big win (Friday night) against Utah. Everyone was a little tired, but we withstood their runs."

The nine-game run is Dallas' longest since it won 13 in a row Feb. 17-March 10.

Dirk Nowitzki led the way with 25 points Saturday and is averaging 25.1 during Dallas' streak. However, the nine-time All Star has been limited to 14.0 points on 10 of 23 shooting his last two meetings with the Warriors.

Although the Mavericks have held 16 of 20 opponents under 100 points this season, the Warriors have hit the century mark 12 times in the last 16 meetings. Golden State is averaging 107.0 points -- second most by an opponent during that span.

While the Warriors (8-12) remain a potent offensive team, defense continues to be a major problem. They rank near the bottom of the NBA in scoring defense, yielding 106.9 points per game.

Golden State, which has lost three straight and eight of nine, has been plagued by poor first quarters lately. They have been outscored by a combined 30 points during opening quarters in the three-game skid and trailed Oklahoma City by 15 after the first 12 minutes in Sunday night's 114-109 loss.

"There's frustration as to why we can't start off the way we finish the second, third and fourth quarters. We won the game by like 10 after the first quarter," said Stephen Curry, who scored a season-high 39 points. "We've just got to figure out how to come out of the blocks a little bit faster."

Monta Ellis added 29 points and is averaging 33.5 in his last two games.

"We've got to just go on to practice and put this one behind us," he told the team's official site after the Warriors scored a season-high 67 points in the second half. "We need to take this third and fourth quarter and try to convert it over to the next game. It's a long season. We are at a great position. We just have to keep playing together. It's going to turn for us; I know it is."

Ellis has put up 35.0 points during his last three visits to Dallas -- 16.5 more than his career average.

The Warriors have lost five of six at Dallas.

The Warriors have showed flashes of being a good team this season, we have to lock up on defense.

Well, I saw a few of their games early in the season. Keith Smart is really tough with those guys, and they play really hard. Also David Lee has been solid for them. They lost the momentum they had early in the season when Lee went down, so that would probably be one of the reasons they've struggled as of late.

This is true GS is on the right path, with imo the right coach but they don't have the players, basically if you don't have a lockdown perimeter defender and you have no one that protects the rim well (well Biedris is ok i guess but he hurts you so much offensively) you aren't going to have success in the NBA

Perhaps mavs777 is introducing an element of unpredictability to the board, much in the same way Chandler brought something unexpected to the Mavs. As long as we keep winning, it could be considered a good thing...

I think the upcoming homestand is key in reversing the trend of last seasons sluggish home performances. Since 05/06 our Mavs didn't lose more than 9 at home until going 28-13 last year. And it somehow started early in the season in losing to 6 Warriors.
Second of all with Utah coming in Saturday they have a chance of winning two in a row against an elite opponent for the first time this season.
Needless to say that additionally it would be a plus heading into the back-to-back Florida trip with confidence from strong home performances.

I'd like to see DeShawn bugging Monta all night long. Ellis went for 31 ppg last season against the Mavs and it will be an interesting challenge yet again to prevent another skilled backcourt from scoring after doing terrific jobs on Rondo, Williams and Paul so far. Defending the opponents backcourt has been key so far to the defensive success.

Opponent backcourt stats compared to last season:
09/10: 43.4 PPG 44.7 FG% 9.3 FTA
10/11: 34.8 PPG 38.7 FG% 8.5 FTA

The Mavs ranked 26th overall in allowed points from guards last season. They rank 1st this season in that category.
Golden States backcourt ranks 2nd in the NBA in points per game and 3rd in FG% with 51.6 points on 47.2% shooting.

Superstition be damned. It's just plain rude to hijack someone else's GDT win streak.

Barea is 7 of 44 from 3-point land this season. Eric "Brickhand" Dampier would shoot a better percentage. He should be fined 5 grand for every missed three.

There, I fixed it. Remember, you don't punish your child every time he/she throws a fit. You punish your child every time he/she has a bad attitude because it can lead to he/she throwing a fit. Give him the option to shoot and he shoots. Instead, rub his nose in the court every single time he heaves one from long range until he looks like Underdog's love child posted above (I shudder at the reasoning he decided to choose that very brand of alcohol considering his spiked leather attire).

Tyson Chandler came down with a stomach virus. He missed Monday's practice and today's shoot around. His status for the game is unclear.

Mavs went 3-1 vs GSW last season, lone loss was the first game. After playing Detroit, MIN, HOU, Utah...Golden State is radically different.

I highly doubt we see a lot of zone tonight.

Yeah, a team with Steph Curry is not the best team to be running a zone against.

They worked extensively on man-defense/ one on one defense in practice yesterday...I'd be shocked if they try it (zone) unless it's to mix it up because Man isn't working.
