Default Time discrepancy

Anyone else watching the ORL v DET game? With 4.8 seconds on the clock , the Pistons inbounded it and took 7 seconds to take a shot. The refs counted the three-pointer from Billups and gave the Magic 0.5 seconds. The refs not only made a horrible call there (should have either called a shot clock violation or had the Pistons replay it), they apparently couldn't review it with slow-mo since the clock never started until Billups hit the three so the clock never hit 0.0

I believe this is the fault of the Detroit scorekeepers? Would the Detroit organization be fined??

This game is so close. That 3 point turn around could be a huge deciding factor.

The Mavs are not the only team to get screwed by the refs it seems.

I'd say the Suns also got screwed by the refs/league last year against the Spurs...

Atlanta also got screwed because KG should have been suspended for pushing a ref.

Imagine if Dirk pushed a ref. He'd probably be out the entire playoffs.

these whole playoffs have been a little fishy

The Lakers WILL play the Celtics in the finals. What's fishy about that?

This is the exact reason why I'm rooting for Lebron or SA or Dwight or Deron.
I hate that David Stern is having wet dreams about Lakers/Celtics and he's going to do everything in his power to make it happen.

Fratello mentioned it very quickly in the game, I have no idea if it's true though, that the time-keepers were from Minnesota. That thought implies that that bring in neutral time-keepers to avoid any kind of "home cooking."

The whole situation was poorly handled and needs to be looked at in the offseason. You can't figure out how much time actually went off but you're going to go ahead and make a guess of how much time should be left after the situation has been deliberated?

I don't buy into the fact that it didn't have an effect on the game. It made a big difference in the outcome. It messes with momentum and psyche of both teams. Orlando's execution at the end was a mess, but the mess might have not even needed to be there in the first place.

I will not believe for a moment that they didn't have a "frame advance" key on the video player.

All you have to do is know the frame rate of the video (or you can extrapolate it from watching earlier video). Normally the frame rate is 30 fps, so with 5.1 seconds left, you just freeze frame when Chauncey gets the ball, then press the frame advance key 153 times. If he still doesn't have the shot off (he didn't, and it wasn't close), then no basket.

It sounds complicated, but it only takes a minute, two tops, and they had a full break between quarters to review it. No excuses, guys.

If Stern screwed us in '06, he was doing it more in favor of the Miami Wades rather than against the Dallas Cubans.

Funny thing? I can almost guarantee the same thing might happen once more in these playoffs.. and if it involves one of Stern's teams--the refs will fix it.

You SO beat me to the punch. I was going to say, doesn't it make your cringe a bit that if this happened to the Lakers, Boston or even Cleveland...you KNOW they would find a way to fix the error.

May 6, 2008 - 11:20 pm
ESPN -
The NBA admitted on Tuesday that Chauncey Billups' three-pointer at the end of the third quarter against the Magic on Monday night should not have counted, according to the Associated Press.

The referees weren't allowed to review the replay in order to make a better call during Game One, a rule that could be changed this summer.

"After reviewing the video of last night's Pistons-Magic game, we determined that the play that concluded with Chauncey Billups' 3-point field goal at the end of the third quarter took approximately 5.7 seconds," League president Joel Litvin said in a statement. "Because there were only 5.1 seconds remaining in the quarter when the play began, the shot would not have counted had the clock continued to run."

The NBA said that the timekeeper for the game was from a neutral city, standard procedure under the league's rules.

"The referees followed proper procedure in addressing the clock malfunction by estimating the elapsed time and using their judgment as to whether the shot was taken in time," Litvin said. "Under NBA rules, the referees did not have the option of using instant replay and a timing device to determine exactly how much time had elapsed, nor do the rules allow for a re-play after a clock malfunction is discovered."
