Default Can Josh SMith play center

the title is self explanatory, i am wondering if he can, and if so, would he be a possible option.

Technically speaking the answer is yes, Josh Smith can play center. Jason Terry can play center also, JJ Barea also can play center.

Can and would Josh Smith take the physical pounding every night that goes with the territory? I'm not moving Dirk to center at any cost. Dirk stays at the 4 and Smith to the 5, but Smith has to suck it up and play physical, by looking at his frame, no.

An octopus, however, can not play center

In the NBA there is no rule that an octopus cannot play, and if an octopus can play, whats to stop one from playing the center position? IF Danny Fortson can be a center, a cephalopod certainly could.

Honestly it all depends on wingspan. If the octopus had an inproportionately large wingspan, it could easily play bigger than it is.

Don't be silly, EL. If we had an octopus at center we would get KILLED on the defensive end. Sure, it might be fun to watch, but we wouldn't win any more games. Remember, defense wins championships.

I actually think an octopus would have tremendous help defense, and might make up for the shortcomings of dirk and JET.

Octopi have pretty good lateral movement, sure, but not the foot speed or the upper body strength to really protect the paint. Not to mention all the rebounds we'd give up. Honestly, an octopus? Why are we even discussing this?! What nonsense!

Forget help defense. An octopus with a decent wingspan (or 4) could easily wrap up his defensive assignment, and could stick to him like glue. Thered be no way Tony Parker could bring his weak @#$$ into our paint with an octopus guarding him.

Maybe, but this couldn't just be any octopus. It would have to be an octopus that had the respect of the refs, otherwise it'd never get away with that kind of defense.

It's effing ridiculous people! If such an octopus even existed, there's no way it would sign for the MLE. It'd probably get near max level deal somewhere else.

The cephalopods are already taking over LA-- maybe looking to sign with the Lakers or milk the Clippers of some cash.

This is silly. Why are we even debating this?

Eight arms (with suction cups!), camouflage, an ink sac, and the ability to squeeze by or through any pick, no matter how obtrusive? The octopus would be a force to be reckoned with, no doubt.

Because if we had J-ho, Marion and Josh Smith on the floor at the same time we would have the bbiq of a dead octopus.

You see this is what happens when you start new topics instead of posting in the off season thread.

A lot of physical talent, yes, but I'm concerned about BBIQ.

Edit: I'm talking about the octopus.

Nellie once won 50 games and a first-round series with an octopus, two sea horses, a stingray, and a unicorn. So yes, it can be done.

By the way, a little bit of trivia that not everyone knows...he also actually had a turtle on the bench.

Ah yes the sea creature team of '82. The sea horses really provided a nice one-two punch, but the real go-to animal was the unicorn.

As far as I know there aren't any Octopi declaring in next year's draft and considering draftees must be removed from high school for at least one year, I doubt we'll get our hands on a solid defensive minded Octopus while Dirk is still in his prime.

Sources inside the Mavs organization say the octopus doesn't want to play in Dallas, but that the team is close to landing OctoMom instead.

Whoa whoa whoa... since when can octopi survive out of water? I'm all for plumbing the depths of available talent, but let's be realistic people!

My vote:

Sure there's only one ball-handling appendage, but no one's stopping him in the paint when he builds up a head of steam. Aren't we looking for an unstoppable offensive center? Leave the defense to Stonehands Damp.

EDIT: And for those worried about the money stuff and 2010, I bet this guy would sign for peanuts!

Good thinking but one of my main concerns here is what will happen when a smallish point guard drives the lane and someone yells "Mouse in the house!"?
