Screw Deron Williams, let's talk about Gina Miller's legs...

No they arent.

Win now/win it all its maybe/probably no big difference between our roster right now and a potential Dirk/Deron/Marion/minimum scrubs.

But Post-Dirk-Franchiseplayer wise the Mavs just striked out.

They might be better this year than they would've been had they landed Deron due to the difficulty of filling out the team in the short term under those circumstances. But unless they find a mid-season trade, one of the young guys they can go over the cap to re-sign blossoms into an all-star this year, or they drop a bomb on the odds makers and win a title, missing out on Deron will likely remain a tick in the loss column since it effectively delays the process of building up the payroll and the talent base around whoever the next franchise player ends up being.

v'Gina Millers legs are better than the Mavs would have been without D. Will. Bettern't yet give Kidd her legs and resign him and put his jersey in the rafters.

Didn't D-Will said that trade made him sure about staying? I'm wondering if we ever had a chance.

If he was leaning Nets over Dallas anyway, i absolutely believe that Cuban not showing up clinched the decision. Would it have been enough to sway him the opposite direction if he were leaning dallas? Probably not, although it could have (with these huge ego stars).

Whether we're better off without Deron or not, or whichever way Deron was leaning, that was a bonehead move by Cuban. I would honestly like to hear someone defend cuban for that decision.

So that's almost certainly a lie then. I mean, why would he call Joe Johnson, if he wasn't 100% sure he stays?

But he called Joe Johnson 4-5 days prior to that date, and asked him how does he feel about playing in Brooklyn? That was at least a week before the meeting, no?

now THAT part i think Deron is making up. Donnie could have answered anything Cuban could have.

The truth is that his feelings were hurt and/or his ego was bruised. If i were a pro athlete, i would notice if an owner didn't come to a meeting. ESPECIALLY if said owner has been one of the most (if not THE most) involved owners in the NBA in recent history. And that would absolutely be a clinching factor in my decision ("well, he obviously doesn't want me enough to be here in person").

Now i know we don't know the exact conflict Cuban had, but if it truly was Shark Tank (or filming of some other show), that's a boneheaded move.

It's about respek, man...

Many of these superstars have a huge ego and want to believe they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's about feeling important and desired. Cuban not showing up made Deron feel underappreciated, I suppose.

Cuban should have anticipated this potential consequence of his absence and planned his schedule around the first few days of free agency.

Perhaps it wouldn't have made a difference anyway as it relates to Deron's eventual decision, yet it was more than strange to hear that Cuban wouldn't attend the meeting. I almost couldn't believe it when I first heard it. It was all about bringing home Deron prior to free agency--and then Cuban and Dirk don't even show up. Again, just strange.

Edit: Took me a while to respond. You nailed it, BBL.

I've been back and forth on this Cuban not being there issue, but really, the decision is on Deron. He chose the Nets, and the decision is on him. He is from Dallas and knows what kind of owner Cuban is. And it should be about playing with Dirk and the Mavs and Carlisle more than who your owner is. Woulda, coulda, shoulda...

I have to believe since the JJ trade was the final action before his decision, even with Cuban there attending the meeting, there's no way you can beat acquiring a 2nd tier star for nothing. It basically vaulted them from 30 wins to 41 wins. Like the last possession wins a football game, I believe things were leaning Dallas before the trade, I mean join Dirk or lead this bunch to 30 wins in Brooklyn?

let me clarify one thing - i do not blame cuban for deron not signing with dallas. But i think his not attending the meeting was a mistake and did influence Deron's decision.

But i absolutely blame him for letting chandler go.

My heart just ached again after reading this.

Cuban not being there was an obvious blow for us, but lets face it, Deron Williams nor any professional athlete outside of maybe Dirk and Tim Duncan will never say no to an extra $25M.

And Cuban not showing up clinched it.

Like i said, i don't blame cuban. His not showing up to the meeting was not THE factor that caused Deron to sign with the Nets. But it was A factor. Even if it was just a factor that reinforced what Deron was thinking anyway, it was still a factor.

Personally I was on the fence with D-Will from jump. I think he's a top 5 pg but still a little overrated in a league wide weak position. Would he have helped the team perhaps but we would be weaker over all with less depth.

Deron can pick up a phone and call Cuban if he needs him. Cuban couldn't call him and give him up to the minute updates like Billy King did (tampering). Prokhorov didn't meet with Deron either during the meetings.

Deron knows what he has in Brooklyn, a 42-40 8th seed that will get bounced by Miami EVERY year, but an extra $20 million (not really when you look at the different taxes) and the shiny lights of NYC. Yeah, I'm sure Cuban not stroking his ego really sealed the deal (sarcasm). Deron is just talking now, that's it.

Deron acting like Cuban not showing up to that meeting had anything to do with him signing in Brooklyn is absolute horseshit - he just doesn't want to own up to the fact that money is more important than winning to him.

Funny because like half a year ago Deron told that he met Prokho maybe three times, that he is never around etc. He gave a rats ass back then about his future franchise player and he gave a rats ass about the Nets until the Arena and the move was in the final stage...

Thats pretty much worse than Cuban not being personal on the meeting. You got there Donnie who is since forever in the FO, the coach and you got mobile phones and Skype if he really wanted it..

Like i said, Deron didnt like Cubans comments after it and thats a way to make him look bad to his own fans. For me thats pretty piss poor by Deron.

Him staying in Brooklyn was clinched the second he knew that they are able to get JJ for a bag of trash. Because he overrated JJ ("Best backcourt in the NBA") and he didnt think future CBA wise what this trainwreck contract really means.

And Deron is trying to switch the focus away from himself. See, if it is Cuban's fault, then his hometown Dallas won't hate him.

Do you think he's going to get booed as loud as Lamar Odom?

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive. Deron is to blame for his choice (he wanted more money), but Cuban also made a mistake by not showing up.

When you don't have the extra money to offer, you need to go above and beyond in catering to these egos. And not showing up to a meeting is not going above and beyond.
