Default Defensive rankings

Through 4 games (too early to really tell):

4th in Opponents FG% at .400 (last year 27th at .459).

12th in opponents scoring at 92.3 (last year 28th at 100.8/game).

I'll try and update this periodically.

I will wait till we beat a team that has won a game before I get too excited. Tonight should be a great measuring stick, Orlando is really talented and really deep, it will be really fun to see how our new scheme works against them.

One of the main reasons thos Mav opponents haven't won any games is that the Mavs have beaten them. Remember, the Kings and the Hornets were unbeaten until the Mavs played them. Just another way to look at it.

This is amazing. We have really turned things around this season. Hopefully we can continue to improve and land in the top 5 of all team defensive categories by years end. If we can do that I dont think any team will be able to stop us.

with how awesome our defense is playing this year thus far, it is still pretty amazing that nine other teams hold their opponents to fewer points per game

Not really when you consider that we're still an up tempo team, allowing for more posessions in a game, and have been vulnerable on the defensive boards.

Some defensive stats after seven games.

1st in OPP FG% 39.0
1st in OPP 3FG% 25.0
9th in OPP PPG 91.4
6th in STLS 9.1
7th in D Reb 32.3
12th in Blcks 6.1

Some differential stats

1st in 3FG% 13.6
3rd in PPG 11.0
5th FG% 5.7

The perimeter stats look really good right now, but it should be pointed out that most of the teams we've played so far haven't shot the long ball well in their other games either.

Not really when you consider the rankings are based upon total rebounds. With the Mavs still playing in up tempo games, that also means that the opponents will take more shots. So, there's alot of shots to go around....alot more rebounds to go around than in most games played by other teams.

Some advice. This would have come off as funnier if what you're implying weren't just wrong. You see, Dallas is also second to last in opponent's offensive rebounds per game.

From ESPN.com

Defensively:
14th in scoring at 95.6 ppg
3rd in FG% at 40.9%
2nd in 3pt% at 26.3%

offensively:
2nd in scoring at 104.4 ppg
11th in FG% at 45.1%
4th in 3pt% at 40.1%

We have a positive differential in all categories except 3pts attempted (-0.6)

hopefully we can keep this up

thanks for keeping this thread up Dooby, it helps remind the absent minded how improved they are at the defensive end.

from 27th to 5th is no small jump

from 28 to 15th is nothing to laugh at

Anyone done any sort of analysis on defensive numbers with/without damp in the game? The team just seems to extend more when he's there and I can't quite put my fingure on it. He's not the great shot-blocker that shawn is? Is it just that he keeps the center out of the paint or is able to seal him off?

I'll have to think about it some over the next few weeks.

He takes up a LOT of room in the middle but mostly it just seems that the defense of the other 4 is a lot more fluid. Maybe its just all psychological for the players knowing that Damp is there.

If I wasnt spending time with my family, I'd crunch some numbers. I'll wait for someone else to do it.

82games.com is the best for evaluating on-court vs. off-court numbers for individual players.

If you want numbers for individual games, check out the game flows at popcornmachine.net. There are errors in the calculations at this sight, I believe because of the way they treat substitutions that happen when teams are shooting free throws, but their numbers are close enough to give a general idea of what a player's on-court +/- is for a particular game.

As for Damp, on balance he hasn't done as well in the +/- as some people have been giving him credit for (there's room for improvement on both ends of the court), though his numbers have been improving as the season has gone on, and there have definitely been games where he's been a clear and necessary positive for the Mavs. Interestingly enough, there's quite a large spread in terms of which players he appears to work best with. His best numbers come when paired with Harris, Fin, Josh, and Dirk. He and Hendu, and he and JT, have been curiously ineffective when they share the court. The pairing with Terry is quite strange when you consider that Terry has been the team's second most effective back-court player overall behind Fin according to the +/-. Offense seems to be the main culprit in the JT/Damp pairing. Nothing seems to have worked out very well when Hendu and Damp have shared the court. Of course, if JT's been paired up with Damp with Hendu in at the same time very often, that could go a long way toward explaining some of the numbers.

Grandmaster_C, one thing that semi show up with those stats is the impact that Dampier has on Dirk on both sides.

Numbrs speaking, it might not show up, but I'd venture to say that Dirk picks up less fouls next to Dampier, obtains more blocks and steals next to Dampier too. Offensively, I would say his FG% and FT attempts greatly increase as well.

I'm not sure that I see the effect you're referring to. Dirk's overall on-court +/- is a +12.9. By comparison the Damp/Dirk pairing has an on-court +/- of +10.8. I suppose you could argue that since some of those paired minutes are against opposing teams' starting units, perhaps the competition is a little stiffer than at other times. Just hard to get a feel is all I'm saying.

The effect is knowing you have a bruising center to absorb punishment if you mke a mistake. The effect is knowing you have someone on the blocks to dump it down to if a double comes on the offensive end, or someone to "unclog" the middle for penetration.

I'm not sure it is measureable by stats. But Dirk's personal stats aren't a fluke this year. Yes, losing Nash forced Dirk to control the ball. But the reason why Dirk is shooting a much better percentage this year from inside and outside the 3 is having Dampier on the court opening up "lanes" for him more. Most of those lanes were clogged by Walker and Jamison.

And if Howard continues to knock down the jumper, you will not see a small forward guard Dirk again. (The only reason Marion got to in Phoenix is because Dallas couldn't punish Amare on the blocks with Damp because of the injury.)

If the effect ain't on the scoreboard then it ain't no kind of effect at all. Damp's effect on the scoreboard has been mixed thus far, but has taken a turn for the better of late. Hopefully that will continue.

Well, that's where +/- stats can be misleading, somewhat.

If Dampier plays against Phoenix, I seriously doubt Dirk picks up 5 fouls. That is what I mean by absorbing contact. That might not directly translate to "points" but it does affect the game if Dirk is considered the last line of defense and has to take a foul or two because of "defensive pressure" on all outsides.

I doubt Damp saves Dirk from fouls any more than Bradley does.
