Wink 2008 MLB Yankee-less Playoffs Thread

Hee....

Is anyone watching the play-in game tonight? I'll be honest. I haven't paid attention to baseball since close to the All-Star break, but I'll be watching tonight.

Oh yeah...John Danks is pitching.

It's funny, I hate the Yankees. Hate them. Screw em.

But now that they're not in, that takes away my primary reason to watch baseball playoffs: Root against the Yankees at all costs.

I'll still watch some. There's always the Angels to root against.

Stay strong thiggy.

According to the Hardline, the stats from tonight count and Justin Morneau has just 1 fewer RBI than Josh Hamilton. Not that it matters much, but that kind of sucks. Didn't Morneau beat him in the HR derby?

I'm predicting Manny faces his old team in the World Series. Dodgers vs Red Sox.

I wish this meant that all the Red Sox bandwagoners would crawl back into their holes, but I know that's not the case.

I'm very surprised Tampa held tough. It's a young team and they could've crawled into a ball and let Boston walk over them. The avalanche was coming down and they didn't buckle. That's a huge learning experience for them.

I doubt anyone had Philly vs Tampa as the World Series matchup. If you did, you're nuts. I'm rootin' for The Tampa Bay Rays...it's a great story.

I thought they were gonna blow it in the 8th. Bases loaded and a pitcher that was just called up in September strikes out J.D. Drew. Who could predict that?

Oh, and die Philly die.

Really not sure what people have against boston.

That being said, I was rooting for Tampa. Way to go you bottom-of-the-barrel sports team....if you can do it....well the Rangers still can't do it.

In general, I'm not a fan of teams that have a big influx of bandwagoners when they're good.. In this area, when Boston's good, you see Red Sox fans everywhere. When they're not, you don't. Sure, I suppose you could say that you shouldn't hold that against the team, but most do...

Plus, in general, I don't like most people from the northeast...

What he said.

Here's a story the epitomizes why I hate Boston.

Two years ago my dad and I went to a Ranger game early in the season. Boston was in town, and there were a ton of Boston fans. Whatever. Dallas is a common place for people to relocate to.

So right before the game start, a dad and son walk down and sit a couple rows in front of us. The dad is probably mid 50's wearing an old beat up Ranger red hat. His son, clearly a Texas boy (you can just tell) is wearing an A&M hat, and a brand spanking new, authentic David Ortiz jersey. I mean it looks like he just cut the tags off.

So anytime Manny or Ortiz come up to bat, this guy is talking to them, calling their name, etc. Rest of the lineup..it's unclear if he knows who they are. So Ortiz smacks a homer in the first, and this guy stands up, points to the name on the back of his jersey, and starts turning around and taunting the fans. Meanwhile his dad looks completely embarassed.

Later in the game Ortiz hits another homer and this dude TAKES OFF his jersey and holds it up, turning around and around taunting all the Texas fans. Look fans can do crap like that, whatever. But I'll bet you a million dollars that this dude has never set foot in the greater New England area and couldn't tell you a thing about Boston pre-2004.

THAT is why I hate the Red Sox.

What Murph and Thig said. I actually think it's quite obvious why people don't like Boston. In Austin, only UT and the Cowboys have more hats and shirts floating around the streets. I see more Red Sox stuff than Mavs, Spurs, Rockets, Stars, or Rangers. It's pretty pathetic.

That is so weird...I don't know any Red Sox fans, bandwagon or real, and I guess I'm not paying attention because I never notice any red sox gear floating around out in public...I notice Yankee stuff.

Go to a Ranger game while Boston is in town.

I don't really have a overall huge fan-fest for Boston, but I like them over the Yankees for sure.

You guys don't think the Cowboys have bandwagonners? That's not a real reason to hate them.

I hate teams that self-proclaim they are better or more important than everyone else. The Detroit Red Wings call themselves "Hockeytown". The Dallas Cowboys call themselves "America's team". The Boston Red Sox call themselves "Red Sox Nation". It's the arrogance and obnoxiousness that drives me to hate certain sports teams.

America calls the Cowboys America's team.

I fully recognize that many people hate the Cowboys for exactly the same reason. I would too if I were a fan of another team.

But I still reserve the right to hate Boston for the same reason.

"America" does? And you hate Boston? Pot meet kettle.
Sorry. Truth hurts.

And I don't get the pot meets kettle comment. I never said anything about Boston's arrogance. I said I didn't like the bandwagon fans. I grew up within a 10 minute drive of Texas stadium, and currently live within 3 miles of it. I think I'm qualified as a non-bandwagoner.

You may not be a bandwagonner, but there are plenty in Arizaona, plenty in St. Louis, and others and others. I don't really judge teams by their bandwagonners though. Every team has their idiots. I just hate the self-proclaim titles people will wrap around themselves. Yes, the media is to blame for spreading it, but it all originates to the team's obnoxious marketing.

I think the Yankee bandwagon is just as bad. The difference right now is just that the Sox are better, so they have a bigger current following. If the roles were reversed, I'd be hating on the Yankees bandwagoners.

At my college (in California), the amount of Red Sox gear walking around campus is ridiculous, and it's a small college. You can find a new person in Red Sox gear just about every day. During the Yanks/Red Sox series of '04, the big TV lounge was jam packed with Boston fans, and a handful of Yankee fans lightly populated the small lounge.

Fortunately, the second most common affiliation I see on campus, for whatever reason, is the UT Longhorn. It's nowhere near as common as all that Red Sox crap, but it's definitely second place.

Don't lie to us. We all know that you're not smart enough to go to college.

wanted to throw in that I'm obviously joking...just giving him a hard time... real hard.

Are they really going to play again tonight? I'm looking at the radar and it looks nasty. It's not going anywhere either.

They won't play tonight, the conditions are worse tonight than they were last night.

Just to reiterate my point that it's not just the Cowboys declaring themselves "America's team"....

Top ten jersey sales for the season:
  • 1. Brett Favre, New York Jets
  • 2. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
  • 3. Eli Manning, New York Giants
  • 4. Marion Barber, Dallas Cowboys
  • 5. Tom Brady, New England Patriots
  • 6. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings
  • 7. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts
  • 8. Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys
  • 9. LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers
  • 10. Terrell Owens, Dallas Cowboys

Well that's that.

I watched the last inning...or some of it. I do always enjoy seeing the child like joy on their faces, that moment that they know. That's cool to see them celebrate. All the money and other things that cloud sports goes away at that moment.

I was rooting for Philly because I have a good friend who's a Philly guy who's been out of a job for a few months. He finally got a job today (and a good one at that) and the Phillies finished it off. I'm happy for him.
