BTW arods numbers for the first 6 innings .290 .395 .498 .893 vs for the 7th inning or later, 291 .383 .581 .964
9th highest ops in baseball after the 7th inning. But keep listening to espn telling you that he isnt clutch.
Conversely, Jeter is actually much worse in the late innings, First 6 - .359 .433 .511 .944
7th or later, .303 .375 .411 .786
Now tell me who is clutch or you can keep being a sheep and listening to ESPN.

Hes not unhittable because he sometimes makes mistakes. He didnt make any in that situation. No one is hitting him when hes on.

i'm not comparing him to jeter. i don't like either one of them. i dislike the yankees in general.
pull up his stats in close games, not just late innings. a hit in the 8th when you're up by 5 doesn't mean crap.
every time i see a game, and it's a clutch situation, a-rod screws it up. strikeout, ground out into a DP, etc. for someone who's supposed to be the "best in the game", we should expect a little more.

In the late innings of close games, A-Rod hit .176 with men in scoring position

Yay Tigers!!!
Watching the Yankees (everything that is wrong with sports) lose every fall is just as fun as watching the Red Wings lose every spring...

Avg, OBP, Slugging, OPS. sorry, you are right, i should have labeled them. My fault. Also, I did look up Arods C&L stats and you are correct, they are utterly horrendous. I dont remember quite what they were but it was like a 237 BA with a slugging percentage under 400. That is pretty effing horrible. He had an ops of a little less than 700.
The funny thing about this argument is that while i think ops is the most important offensive stat in baseball, i do think that the sabermetric stats that have become popular(OBP and OPS) have begun to be overrated. I think the primary beneficiary of this is Adam Dunn. Hes an average player and everyone thinks hes great.

man, what a game last night. rogers' curve ball was straight FILTHY. it was awesome to watch him pitch with so much emotion. that standing O as he left the field literally gave me chills (watching in HD helps with that).
oh, and at least a-rod did something right. pudge was definitely out at third...
As for the A's, who'd a thunk it? well, me! i don't know why, but i just have a good feeling about the A's.

Okay. I'm no Kenny Rogers fan. But that was pretty cool of him to go on top of the dugout & celebrate with the fans. Congrats to the Tigers.

Ive always loved kenny rogers. Glad to see him go out there and pitch like that. Wish them the best in the rest of the playoffs. Him and pudge is a good enough reason to root for them over anyone else. Sean Casey also seems like a really easy guy to root for and since verlander and bonderman basically won me the fantasy title i like them too.
Oh yeah did i mention that Joel Zumaya could very well have the best stuff in the history of baseball and DOES have the best fastball in the history of baseball.

Tap the breaks on proclaiming him as the best fastball in the HISTORY of baseball. Sheesh. You probably don't think Zito is any good either.

Wow 5-0, don't you think it's a little early to proclaim that?

ha ha, did you guys see leyland right after the game? went behind the plate and kissed his wife and daughter through the netting. then some random tigers fan runs up and leans into the net, puckering up. leyland leaned in and kissed the brim of the guy's hat. it was pretty funny (both on the fans part, and leyland's part). it'll probably be on youtube soon.

Yeah... I saw that BBL... Pretty funny! I also liked how Leyland was about to walk out onto the field and someone poured champagne over his head and down his back and he made this hilarious face and turned around and went back inside. I guess he had to clean up before making a public appearance!

He throws harder than anyone ever and it has movement. I said it earlier, it seems like hyperbole but really name one better. Ryans? Only one with a legit argument and if he was in relief he might have thrown harder but with all things being as they are, I honestly believe that Zumaya does have the best fastball in the history of baseball. I dont think that means anything with regards to accomplishments. His fastball wont get any better than it is now so i dont see why waiting 8 years or something like that is necesarry. Im not arguing its accomplished the most in history or anything like that and im not calling him anywhere near the best relief pitcher in baseball or anything like that but im just saying that that pitch is the best fastball in baseball history.
Others with slight arguments might be guys like Wagner.

Nolan Ryan, Clemens, J.R.Richard...there are others who threw well over 100. To proclaim a young gun to have the best fastball in baseball history is purely nuts.

when did roger clemens throw "well over a 100"? The hardest pitch nolan ryan ever threw was 100.9. Zumaya throws harder than that about once a game. I dont know who JR Richard is so im not gonna comment on him but when you are young is when you throw the hardest. To proclaim someone who ISNT a young gun as the best fastball in baseball history is purely nuts. Like i said, im not proclaiming him to be an all time great or anything as a pitcher. Im just saying that that one talent is the best in the history of baseball and he could never throw another pitch and it would still be true. This has absolutely nothing to do with what level of success he has.

Satchel Paige also had a heck of a fastball. People say his is the fastest of all time. I read a book about it once. They never were actually able to record it, because they didn't have radar guns back then, but people who witnessed him pitch said that they've never seen anyone throw harder. Satch was a heckuva pitcher.

To get back to the main topic of this thread, now that the Yanks are out I'd say that the winner of the NLCS will win the WS.

i still think whoever comes out of the AL will win it (especially if it's the tigers. if it's the A's, the NL might have a chance). All year, the NL has been (to steal from Sports Guy) the equivalent of AAAA baseball compared to the AL.

The most widely quoted response is Nolan Ryan, whose fastball was "officially" clocked by the Guinness Book of World Records at 100.9 miles per hour in a game played on August 20, 1974 versus the Chicago White Sox. A record that's still included in the book.
