Republicans will never be able to outbid democrats when it comes to vote-buying. They need another plan.

Social Security recipients won't get a cost-of-living increase in their checks this year. Some Republican-leaning seniors have blamed the Obama administration. But it's not the President's fault. The law governing COLA adjustments doesn't trigger them unless the consumer price index rises. This year, it fell. So no adjustment.
But Obama thinks seniors should get their increases anyway, even though living costs less this year than it did last year. He's proposed that Washington simply write senior citizens a check for $250 each. What a guy!
Democrats in Congress love the idea. Most Republicans do, too, it's been reported. What could cause such bipartisan unity in these politically heated times? Well, the checks would arrive right before the 2010 congressional elections.
Want to unify Washington? Just give incumbents the chance to take credit for sending checks directly to the country's most active voting group -- right before an election. So what if the country has to issue more debt to cover the cost of buying votes for incumbents? We've got bipartisan agreement, and that's what matters, right?
