Andre Agassi
I don't know if there are many tennis fans on this board but Andre Agassi definitely deserves a thread.
His last US Open (21 total)
first round he beat Pavel after four grueling sets
he needed a cortisone shot afterwards for his ailing back
first round match where 23 thousand showed up
second round he beat Baghdatis in a five set epic
the match is probably the equivalent to game 7 of the Mavs/Spurs series
the match included:
Agassi being up 2-0 in sets and 4-0 with the serve the third
the whole cramping episode of Baghdatis
Agassi being extremely emotional during a 5th set changeover
Agassi limping to the press conference after the win
second round match where 23 thousand showed up and stayed until 1am NY time
he plays a german named B. Becker next and looks like he will be playing American, Andy Roddick, in the 4th round.

Doc should know this Becker kid... He comes out of Baylor's ridiculous tennis program. Man they sure produce a lot of great players.

Agassi's making it interesting, for sure. You can't help but cheer for him in these matches. Roddick's looked really good so far w/Jimmy Connors coaching him, personally, I'd love to see him match up w/Agassi.
I can't believe he's been in 21 Opens. That's crazy. Going to be kind of weird not seeing him after this.

He's easily top ten. Probably top 5.
The only guys I would automatically put ahead of him are Sampras, Federer and Borg.
Lendle, McEnroe and Connors are probably all right there with Agassi after that.
I was never a big Agassi fan, but I'll probably stop down to watch his next match. This reminds of when Samprass said goodbye, what an amazing run that was, to beat Agassi for one last U.S. Open title.

If you're ranking all time you've got to include some of the old, old guard like Laver and Emerson. But I'd put Andre top 10 for sure.
That's in terms of where he ranks as a tennis player. Where he ranks on my list of favorite athletes, though, is #1. It just feels good to root for him. I'll really miss him.

I know him very well and although I like Agassi I hope Bene kicks his ass. Benjamin Becker is a great kid and a great tennis player. He is a class guy and will play hard. Big serve, good baseline game and fast. Agassi has his work cut out for him.

For a HUGE tennis fan, and a HUGE, HUGE Agassi fan, this is truly a sad day for me... I hope you are forever healthy Andre and I hope everyone realizes what you gave to the sport.

growing up with mcenroe and conners, it was a hard transformation to the next era of american players for me. although i recognize sampras, and to a much lesser extent, courier's greatness, i could never really get into their careers. i enjoyed watching chang play, but he was the tennis version of corey pavin, just not big or strong enough to handle the change of technology and the transformation from shotmakers to bangers.
but agassi, he's the one who kept me in the tennis loop. i've enjoyed watching the way his game and his life changed as he's matured. i found myself shedding a tear along with him after his match yesterday. he will be missed.
and now the search begins for a new american tennis icon. definitely not roddick. if its anyone, it'll be blake. maybe ginepri.
for the love of pete, deliver us a serve and volleyer.

I remember growing up on Andre Agassi, seeing his long hair flying everywhere while throwing down those aces left and right. I even had a pair of those neon pink Huraches Nike made for him. He always carried himself with class and gained alot of respect from me. Agassi has to go down as one of the top 5 players ever. Congrats to a great career.

Andre is/was one of my all time favorite athletes. If I had to rank them, I'd say that he falls no further than the number 3 spot. It truly was difficult for me to watch his career end with his back completely limiting his ability to compete at his normal level. But, it was a joy watching him play at a high level in the first two rounds.
I've never followed an athlete this closely for this long. I've spent alot of time thinking about his career and how much it has meant to me as a sports fan. I truthfully felt like a part of my sports life died with his final match. Even though my interest in tennis has decreased over the years, my enjoyment in watching Agassi play has only risen. I honestly do not believe that another can take his place in tennis for me. His final match was a very tearful moment for me to say the least.

Rooting for Agassi to lose in his final tournament is automatic negative rep. I apologize that you're offended, but your friend beating Agassi shouldn't take priority over it being Agassi's final tournament for anyone except for the Becker and his family.
