Default Suns to audition big men Wednesday

I do not blmae the Suns because PJ Brown won't make his mind up or else they know he might be going else where.

--------------------------------------

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/97074

While the indecisive P.J. Brown remains in limbo — but still a possibility to join the Suns once the season begins — the team will begin auditions for a vacant reserve big man spot today with Elton Brown, Vitaly Potapenko and Michael Ruffin all coming to town.

Suns, Jazz had brief talks involving Marion
Read Jerry Brown's blog, Rim Shots

The Suns will sign a big man to a nonguaranteed contract to fill their final roster spot before camp begins, a source close to the situation said.

The Suns were also interested in having ex-Chicago Bull Michael Sweetney come in, but plans for a workout were canceled and there is now doubt that he will be in Phoenix’s plans for next season. Brian Skinner, another player believed to be under consideration by the Suns, has dropped from the radar, as has ex-Sun Jake Tsakalidis.

Here’s a quick look at today’s visitors:

Brown, who turned 24 last weekend, played three preseason games with the New York Knicks last season. The 6-foot-9, 255-pound forward had a strong year with the Colorado 14ers of the NBA Development League, averaging 18.4 points and 9.6 rebounds in 50 games.

Potapenko, 32, has played 11 NBA seasons but played only three games for the Sacramento Kings last season. Nicknamed “The Ukraine Train,” the 6-10, 280-pound center/forward had his best season with the Boston Celtics in 1998-99, when he averaged 10.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a game, but has battled injuries since.

Ruffin, 30, has played seven years in the NBA, spending the last three with the Washington Wizards. The 6-8, 250-pound Ruffin has averaged four rebounds in about 15 minutes a game during his career. He played in only 30 games last season.

The Suns have not heard any more news from Brown, the former Bulls forward/center, who might be waffling on his decision to retire. The Suns don’t expect to have an answer from Brown before training camp begins Oct. 1.

I was going to say, if this is all that is left besides Webber and Brown, then Webber and Brown will sure get paid good. I do not blame Phx for working guys out and trying to find a big man but it must be better guys out there than this.

The Suns were never in the Webber/Brown race in the first place?

I think I need new material...

In the race for Webber/Brown. It was reported a few times that Phx was front runners on PJ Brown and he visited them. Who knows now and with Webber, they wasn't trying for him. Dallas, Detroit, Orlando and maybe a couple more teams was after Webber. It is alot of teams wanting PJ Brown with the main ones being Phx, Dallas, Orlando, Miami(Riley has went after him hard in the last two weeks) and it seems like a team or two from the east wanted him also. Brown just keeps saying he is thinking of retiring and letting people bid him up. I feel Webber will pick either Detroit or Dallas but we will just have to see.

Pat Riley is trying to get tripple towers under the goal it sounds like. They are all old, Shaq, Morning and PJ Brown but all have been very good players.

Suns' big-man search goes on
Paul Coro
The Arizona Republic
Sept. 13, 2007 10:54 PM

The Suns have one remaining roster spot open and will fill it with a big man by the end of the month.

Looking to fill the frontcourt void created when they traded Kurt Thomas and his $8 million contract to Seattle, the Suns held workouts this week with free agents Elton Brown, Vitaly Potapenko and Michael Ruffin.

Phoenix hopes to bring in Brian Skinner next week and has scouted Esteban Batista. Mike Sweetney appears out of the picture.

The Suns have 12 guaranteed contracts but must carry 13 players. Any player they sign will cost double his salary due to the luxury tax.

"That's our weakness," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said of his team's size. "I don't think people understand that because we have a weakness there, we're able to keep our nucleus and perimeters together. Otherwise, you would not have a Raja Bell or you wouldn't have a Leandro Barbosa. You wouldn't have a Boris Diaw. Something's got to give.

"We are a really good team. It'd be nice to have a big guy who can play, but it costs you $10 million to get one of those. You can't have all the good players in the league. Financially, you can't do it. You pick the guys you like. Do we have a weakness? Yeah. Does San Antonio have a weakness? They have a weakness. They just played better than we did."

Seems like Phoenix is out of the Webber picture.

Is it time to start getting hopeful about Webber coming to Dallas?

I'm sorry to do this and didn't think I would stoop this low, but I don't think Pheonix was ever in the Webber race to begin with.

I agree, we need to grab Webber or try. Brown helps also but i am for Webber more so than Brown. Webber is younger. I guess i could wish for both. The big men must be very thin, if Phx is scrapping that hard. Kurt Thomas did not fit the run and gun style, he is undersized some and older but he is tough and solid. If they do not get someone to fill his position, it hurts them.
