Default Miami Signs Charlie Bell

Miami Signs Charlie Bell

The Miami Heat announced today that they have signed guard Charlie Bell to an offer sheet. Under NBA rules, the Milwaukee Bucks now have seven days to match the offer or the restricted free agent will be a member of the Heat. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bell, a 6’3”, 200-pound guard, appeared in all 82 games (64 starts) for the Bucks last season and averaged 13.5 points, 3.0 assists, 2.9 rebounds, 1.18 steals and 34.7 minutes. A three-year NBA veteran, Bell began his NBA career after signing with the Phoenix Suns as an undrafted free agent on July 23, 2001. In addition to playing for the Suns and Bucks, he also saw action with the Dallas Mavericks during the 2001-02 season. For his career he has averaged 10.9 points, 2.6 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 28.2 minutes while shooting 43.7 percent from the floor and 75.7 percent from the foul line.

It looks like the Heat are getting guys to at least hold down the fort until Wade
comes back. Wade is expected to miss at least the first 2 weeks of the season.

He would have been solid as a backup for Harris if we had traded Jet. Ah well.

Yea I was wondering did you guys remember Charlie Bell was a Mav. I thought he would have a decent NBA career watching him in college but he didn't impress much as a Mav. Good to see he's finally catching on. Shocked the Bucks didn't resign him.

Except that he's several years older, he can't play point to save his life, and he's never had any success except for on a weak Milwaukee team. He didn't play at all for the first 5 years of his career until Milwaukee moved him to the off-guard spot. Amazingly, he started 32 games last year at forward even though he is only generously listed at 6'3". He was able to put up numbers by exploiting matchups against bigger guard and forwards.

And just to play devil's advocate with you Devin Harris has never had any success except on a loaded team where opponents are devoting their attention to Dirk, Howard and Terry. Assist to turnover ratios are about the same. Bell has a jumpshot that Harris doesn't.

Still, I agree that Harris is the better player, but $25 mil better over the same 5 years? Not IMO. Looks like Miami, or Milwaukee if they match, is getting an 80% Devin Harris at only 40% of the cost.
