Default Die Republicans Die

John Derbyshire is a bit sour.

Quote:
I'm sour about the GOP too. What did it all get us, those 8 years of pandering and spending? If GWB had turned his face against new entitlements, closed the borders, deported the illegals, held the line on calls to loosen mortgage-lending standards, starved the Department of Education, and declined those invitations to mosque functions, would the GOP be in any worse shape now?

...

What lost this election was the cloth-eared cluelessness of George W. Bush, the timid squeamishness of John McCain, and the deep lack of interest in conservative principles among Republican primary voters.

Sour? You bet I’m sour. Where was conservatism in this election? Where was restraint in government? Where was national sovereignty? Where was liberty? Where was self-support? And where are those things now? Where are they headed this next four years? Down the toilet, that’s where.
Invariably Dems and wankers in the media will tout this election as a repudiation of conservatism, but there was no conservatism in the Republican party in the first place. This was nothing more than a repudiation of the Republican big government pandering and spending in favor of Democrat big government pandering and spending.

Happy day after election day. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Republicans took the media propoganda for granted.

Yes, the pandering to the left and reaching across the aisle from George W. Bush hurt his credability as a leader. President Bush was naive in thinking that he could get Washington to unite for the greater good of the country, he underestimated the hunger for power from the liberal elitist and now we will pay for this.

The only hope is the Republican will grow a set and stand up to the liberal run we are being challenged with!!!

Stop the under the table wink wink deals and actually do your jobs!!!

This needs to be a full court press from day one!!! Enlighten the people and make our government an open book!!! Expose the nastiness of the left. Sharing the truth is what we want, stop letting the left get away with the manipulation of the American people!!!

You can really drive a point home, huh?

People with your mindset are what's destroying the Republican party... Conspiracy theories about the "left" certainly won't gain you any support - it just makes you look bat-sh!t crazy, and who wants to side with that? (hint: America just answered that question...)

I agree, with the exception that social conservatism has been in office, and is still doing well on the ballots - it's just doing better than the republicans are.

funny...

Interesting point re social conservatism...I note in California, where B.O. won by a large magin, the prop 8 ban on gay margin won by 5 percentage points...

BO >> JM 61% - 37%
Prop 8 >> gay marriage 52% - 47%

that's an interesting thing....a very socially conservative thing passes in the same state where the republican candidate got nailed...so to speak. While I'm no fan of such bans on marriage, I think this indicates something about the divergence of Republican and conservative interests.

Prop. 8 and others like it is merely forstalling the inevitable. That's why there's such a push to get all these amendments in now. In 20 years this country will be even less socially conservative not more.

Not really. Obama begged off of commiting to gay marriage, and at times voiced his opinion in such a way that he was actually used in support of the anti-gay-marriage propaganda.

I think gay marriage bans have been up in like 30 states, and have won in 30 states. It's not a divergence when (at least for this issue), the general population is so conservative that party distinction does not matter. It's not like McCain was against prop 8. Abortion is another issue (along with stem cell stuff, and all kinds of right to life issues). The parental notification thing in CA did not pass. Abortion is an issue for which the social conservative interest is still tied to the Republican party. Bush represented both of these conservative issues pretty well.

Immigration issues might straddle economic and social conservativeness, depending on who you talk to. Bush definitely lost a lot of party (and conservative) support over that.

But this is my larger point -- the generaly population is so conservative, and this fact is born out by the fate of gay marriage bans. But even where conservative issues can carry the day, Republicans can't. I'm saying the passage of gay marriage bans is a good indication that Republicans didn't take it in the can this election because they've been too conservative.

Gotcha. you're using 'divergence' in the same sense that I said 'conservatism is doing better than republicans.' If I could attempt to rephrase: They've diverged in the polls despite convergence in social conservatism because of divergence in fiscal conservatism. I'm on board with that.
