Analysis: T'wolves are trading Calathes' rights to Dallas. He got a nice guaranteed contract from a team in Greece, so that probably dropped him on some NBA draft boards. More second-round picks would be wise to take his lead and earn good money while developing their games overseas.

The comparision I've read about Nick is a less athletic version of Hinrich. Basically, he's a good PG and can score...just not so great on defense. I don't have any problems with that as a project and we're not counting on anything right now.

I was thinking a slow Jason Kidd. This guy fills up the stat sheet: 17 points, 5 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 48%fg, 39%3fg

He certainly has the tools, body and confidence to be a good player. We'll see what happens.
Hopefully we look at this a couple years from now and say we got a steal.

Is he 6'6"? If so, that's not a slow version of Jason Kidd. That's a long version of...someone.

I agree, this is a guy with a ton of potential. I think he is going to amount to something. He's got the athletic ability, has a good shot, decent defender and decent finisher. Almost makes you wonder why he wasn't ranked higher than he was.

I still can see the Hinrich comparison. He can dish, get some rebounds, and score. He just isn't that great on defense.

ESPN lists him at 6'5. I don't think he went to the combine so I don't know if there's a socks measurement out there.

Most likely because teams didn't want to wait for him to come back from over seas. I think this guy will turn out to be a steal for us.

The Kidd think was kind of tongue in cheek. Nobody passes like Kidd. He averaged 9 assists and 3 steals at Cal. Both ridiculous numbers for a college player in a major conference.
But based on the numbers Calathes is a better rebounder and passer then Hinrich.

I'd be careful with that "nobody passes like Kidd" claim. What...about...Jose Juan Barea???

Piece up from DB.com, finally, about the draft.
Quote:
Beaubois: 'The Most Interesting Man In The World'
Mavs Claim They 'Pinpointed' French 'Thriller'; Calathes, Too?
By Mike Fisher -- DB.com
You will recall how impressed we all were with the Rodrigue Beaubois Highlight Reel. (Which, eerily and coincidentally, gets musical accompaniment from 'Thriller.') So. … how long is it going to take to see the French point guard do anything akin to that in a Mavs uniform?
As we are imbedded with the team at Mavs HQ, some quickie impressions on Dallas’ first-round pick, including comments from owner, coach, GM and player that pretty much make it sound like the Dallas Mavericks just drafted “The Most Interesting Man In The World’’:
(PS: Is Nick Calathes ending up here, too?)
*How Long I: Rick Carlisle says Frenchy will be on Dallas on Friday, will be on the Summer-League roster and will be on the varsity roster in the fall. (I’m not sure why outlets are hinting otherwise; Carlisle looked me
right in the eye and said it.)
*How Long II: Carlisle didn’t take the bait when asked whether Beaubois is projected as a “rotation player.’’ He talked of how the kid’s skills – he’s a speedster with Rondo’s body but a terrific jumper – will someday match up with the Pauls and the Parkers of the West. Emphasis, though, on the “someday.’’
"Everybody says (I’m like) Rajon Rondo,’’ Rodrigue said in a quickly-arranged conference call with the media. “But I think I am a better shooter than him. We both have long arms, so I can defend."
*How Long III: Carlisle was asked if he sees the kid as a starter a few years down the line. He didn’t bite on that one, either.
*Pinpointed? That’s what the Mavs said about this pick; that all the movement, back and around again, was designed with Beaubois as the target, and that there was no real effort to slide up to take one of the more highly-projected PGs. I’m always a little skeptical about “pinpoint’’ claims – blame Jimmy Johnson for that – but let’s take the Mavs at their word.
This means they think waiting on Beaubois was a move just as worthy as trying to skip up a bit for Maynor and the rest. OK.
*RUMOR: The Mavs are working out a way to acquire Nick Calathes, too. ...
*Money. Money. Money. Money. That’s the answer to the question that you are dying to ask. Dallas saves money. Saves it by moving down to Portland, saves it by accumulating non-guaranteed second-rounds, saves it by not taking a looping swing in a major trade.
Until the start of August – when making the money work FOR them MUST come to fruition with the use of the Stack Chip.
*On the “Should-They-Have?’’ List? Put DeJuan Blair on there. And Sam Young.
You might put BJ Mullens there – he’s the guy Dallas drafted to give to OKC – but I cannot tell you how happy the assembled media here … the ones who really know there college hoops … were to see Mullens not land in Dallas.
*Athleticism? Watch that Highlight Reel, I tell you, while you read what Donnie says:
"We could not be happier with the addition of Rodrigue," Donnie says. "His dynamic athleticism will add versatility and energy to our backcourt. He was one of the highest-rated athletes this draft."
No argument there. He, he’s got a 6-10 wingspan, a 40-inch vertical and he’s a sprinter.
Carlisle used the word “dynamic,’’ too, and says this Mavs roster needs that sort of electricity. Agreed.
*He’s from Guadeloupe. No, I don’t know exactly what that is. But here's a collection of thoughts on him from month ago.
*Forget his Europe pro stats (10 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals). The stats don’t really translate. The question is whether the skills translate – and how soon.

I was just thinking about that too...there was an outside shot of being in the first round and then it just becomes a crapshoot in the 2nd round.
