Default Kerry: Don't Lower Gas Prices

John Kerry "quickly seized on [Bob] Woodward's assertion on Sunday that the Saudi ambassador to the United States had agreed that his country would make sure that oil prices did not get too out of hand and would lower them to boost the American economy prior to the election--a decision that would presumably help Mr. Bush politically," reports the New York Times:

"That is outrageous and unacceptable to the American people," Mr. Kerry, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, declared during a campaign stop in Florida.

Why would lower gas prices be "outrageous and unacceptable"? And why was Kerry warning of this prospect on the same day that, as Reuters reports, "the national price for motor fuel hit a record high for the fourth straight week"? That's like giving a speech about global warming on one of the coldest days in decades.

You miss the issue entirely.

The question isn't support for or against lower gas prices, the issue is that an under the table agreement by the Bush WH with the Saudis for them to use oil to influence the elections in the US is what is "outrageous and unacceptable". If the accusation were proven true it reflects very poorly on the Bush WH.

You sound like Rosanne Rosanadana on SNL.

The issue is that a presidential contender would take bob woodwards "admittedly" heresay as gospel. Terrible judgement. He or his handlers are knuckleheads.

I haven't read the book (and neither have you, right?) but Woodward was given access to everybody (including the Pres BTW) for first hand accounts, so the writings are NOT "hearsay".

Ok MD... If you are comfortable with that level of president ok. Clarke obviously had the same access but his "recollection" has been challenged as well.

You can defend kerry pulling something out of a book that hasn't even been published yet and trying to use it directly in a campaign speech, but I suspect this will also just make him look like......and idiot.

Yeah, of all things he is using a book!...and we all know how reading a book, and then actually thinking about that book and using it to make points, makes one an "idiot".

and all this time we've been believing that reading books and improving one's knowledge was a good thing...glad you've set us straight. No more books for us!

Wonder what new book is on the "Suggested reading list" on the Bush-Cheney campaign website?

hint: It is the book that was written about the Iraq invasion, the writer was given access to over 75 administration personnel including George W. Bush, and John Kerry has quoted from it in his recent speeches.
