Mavs let Manning go after one-year stint

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

DALLAS -- Danny Manning, a former No. 1 overall draft pick, was waived Monday by the Dallas Mavericks.

Manning, 36, signed as a free agent by the Mavericks in August, played in 41 games, averaging 4.0 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13.5 minutes last season. He wasn't on the team's postseason roster after missing 23 games at the end of the regular season because of a lower back strain.

Manning was the first overall pick in the 1988 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers after he led Kansas to the NCAA title.

Los Angeles traded Manning to Atlanta midway through the 1993-94 season. The 6-foot-10 forward played the next five seasons in Phoenix, then played one season in both Milwaukee and Utah before joining Dallas.

He averaged at least 13.4 points per game for his first 10 seasons with highs of 22.8 in 1992-93 and 20.6 in 1993-94. He played in the All-Star game in 1993 and 1994.

He averaged 16.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in eight playoff appearances, totaling 39 games

I figured he would be gone this offseason. Manning played pretty decent but just got lost in the shuffle. Newman will probably be the next one to go.

Newman is a FA. I guess they couldn't find a way to use Manning as trade filler. By just releasing him, the Mavs no longer have a way to move that salary in any trade. But, they know more about what they wan to do than I do.

That basically leaves Avery, Bradley, Eschmeyer, Griffin and Abdul-Wahad as the only trade filler guys. Two guys have rather large dollar contracts and two more have pretty long deals. If the Mavs were to make a move in the draft for a particular player (Donnie & Don's latest suprise) Griffin would be the most desirable supporting cast Mav to another team(outside of Van Exel or Raef). His deal is very reasonable, expires for 2003 and on top of that he is a very good player on both sides of the ball.

Or for a more local guy, how nice would be it be if Tayshaun Prince fell into the middle of the second round and the Mavs were able to trade up to get him? The guy is a 6'9'' small forward with a 7ft wingspan, very athletic and a decent shooter with a rep for being clutch.

For the purposes of draft manuevering, Wang, Buckner, and Najera are not yet signed.

I wonder why the timing of this release. it seems like it would have been better to wait and see if he could have been used as filler somewhere. Maybe the Mavs have deals in place and just didn't need him though. Seems odd timing wise.

Well speculation may be that Manning's salary may become guaranteed on July 1st, or he was due a roster bonus at that time.

BTW, you can still do a sign and trade of Wang, Najera or Buck for a draft pick in this draft, you just can't consumate the deal until you get the player signed. Technically, you would be trading away the rights to a player rather than the draft pick.

The salary issue makes sense.
