"Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment," Hutaree.com reads. "The only thing on earth to save the testimony and those who follow it, are the members of the testimony, til the return of Christ in the clouds. We, the Hutaree, are prepared to defend all those who belong to Christ and save those who aren't. We will still spread the word, and fight to keep it, up to the time of the great coming."

Nine suspects associated with Hutaree, which is purportedly a Christian-based militia group, have been charged with conspiring to kill police officers and then attack a funeral in hopes of killing more law enforcement officials, federal prosecutors said Monday. U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said agents moved on the group because the militia members were planning an attack sometime in April.

Members of the militia, including its leader, David Brian Stone, also known as "Captain Hutaree," are charged in the case. An indictment alleges that members of the group conspired to "levy war against the United States, (and) to oppose by force the authority of the government of the United States."

Eight suspects have been arrested by the FBI and one more is being sought. Seven of the eight captured suspects are due in court later Monday.

Andrew Arena, head of the FBI's field office in Detroit, said the case is an example of "radical and extremist fringe groups" found throughout society.

The "Doctrine of the Hutaree," which is based on faith, according to the Web site, states that Christians should "stand firm in Christ and believe in him until our uttermost end. The testimony must by no means pass away and we must spread the word believing in Christ's words, even during the end times."

A two-minute video on the Web site depicts several camouflaged, armed men firing high-powered rifles as they move throughout open wilderness. At one point, three men can be seen firing weapons from behind a parked vehicle. Several other videos of the militia's training activities, including one that has been viewed more than 21,000 times, can be found on its YouTube channel.

Michael Lackomar, a spokesman for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, told the Associated Press that one of his team leaders got a frantic phone call Saturday evening from members of Hutaree, which the Web site says means "Christian soldier." The callers said their property in southeast Michigan was being raided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Lackomar said.

"They said they were under attack by the ATF and wanted a place to hide," Lackomar said. "My team leader said, 'No thanks."'

A message sent to the militia group by FoxNews.com seeking comment was not immediately returned early Monday.

According to the militia's ranking system, members of the group can hold titles such as senior gunner, gold rifleman, "zulif" and "arkon."

"Respect the officer above you and obey your commander with dignity," the Web site reads. "Each man holds his place in flesh and spirit, heaven and earth."

The Web site also includes links to Hutaree forums, a photograph of a patch for the Colonial Christian Republic and a red banner promoting a training session for April 24.

"Preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive," the Web site reads. " … Being Hutaree is to stay the Testimony of Christ alive, and follow a motto, John 15:13, 'Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.'"

Hutaree was named in a list of 512 so-called active "patriot" groups in the U.S. last year by the Southern Poverty Law Center in its spring intelligence report on extremist organizations. Of those groups, 127 were militias, including Hutaree. The remaining groups, according to SPLC, engage in "groundless conspiracy theorizing" or advocate anti-government doctrines.

Along time ago I took an oath to defend this nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Being as their are clearly two opposing ideologies...and both interpreting the constitution to meet their own views...who is the enemy?

It's clear that those who wished death on Bush and those who currently wish death on Obama are equal enemies.

The media outlets should unite and condemn BOTH!!! However it appears as though this too is a selective righteousness...

In my view, the current administration and the democrat lead congress is clearly an enemy to my views of America and American FREEDOMS. However, my weapons of choice are simply my voice and my vote.

That being said, at what point do we decide that the political waters have gone from luke-warm to boiling hot and it's time to jump out? (Frog and the pot of water analogy)

At what point do we acknowledge the freedoms have been removed and the constitution is being trampled on...to...dare I say it...stand up and participate in a revolution?

How long have we seen other forms of tyranny come into power and stay in power? How many of these were initiated with the best of "PR" messages. Did Germany simply wake up one morning and decide to be under NAZI power...what lead to the change in the German people to allow for this evil to actually take over and control the nation?

The progressive erosion of America is taking place and perhaps at an all-time dangerous level. Will Americans stand by and allow it to happen, naive to what is taking place and so wrapped up in their own lives...or will Americans stand up on the values that this nation was founded on, stopping the destruction of our liberties and freedoms...thus bringing on progress for the world?

Again, violence is not that answer...using our voice and our vote is where we are today...however the parties are laying down the ground work for what could erupt into some dark days.

My point is that both sides are guilty of......using what happens to further their political objectives. Now IMO I find it much,much worse to spit on, call baby killers, etc... soldiers who are putting their lives on the line versus politicians who are enacting by fiat a very,very controversial mandate, one that these people have strenuously objected to for over a year. And of course while peacefully objecting they've been called, terrrorists, serial murderers, racists etc. by the politicians who are supposed to be serving them. Okay...they are tough, they can take it.

My advice to them is to call these charges what they are..political posturings and in many cases bigotry for what it is...and ignore it..keep on doing what they are doing..just louder.

The office of Rep. Eric Cantor, a Virginia Republican who is his party's No. 2-ranking House leader, has confirmed reports that a man has been arrested for making threats on the lawmaker's life.Here's the just-issued statement:

Over the weekend, Congressman Cantor was notified by law enforcement that a threat was made against his life. Law enforcement officials informed Congressman Cantor that the threat was determined as credible and they were responding accordingly. The Congressman was later notified that an arrest was made and a suspect was in custody.
At this time, the Congressman will have no further comment on this threat or the investigation, and asks that inquiries be directed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Congressman is deeply grateful for, and would like to dearly thank all local and federal law enforcement involved, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Attorney's Office in Virginia and Philadelphia, U.S. Capitol Police and the Henrico Police Department in Virginia.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the suspect in custody is a Philadelphia man who made anti-Semitic threats against the congressman. Cantor is Jewish.
The arrest is the latest development in the escalating nastiness following the enactment of President Obama's health care initiative.

The Web threat from the suspect, Norman Leboon, took aim at Cantor's Jewish heritage. It also said he was "a liar, you're a Lucifer, you're a pig." Leboon was a fugitive from state charges for making terrorist threats.

Norman Leboon, 38, was charged after he allegedly recorded and posted the YouTube video on the Web. He threatened to kill the Congressman and his entire family. Laboon made several statements that question his mental state of mind.

"My Congressman Eric Cantor, and you and your cupcake evil wife," the video said. "Remember Eric... our judgment time, the final Yom Kippur has been given. You are a liar, you're a Lucifer, you're a pig, a greedy f---ing pig, you%u2019re an abomination, you receive my bullets in your office, remember they will be placed in your heads. This comes on the heels of news reports about various acts of violence towards members of Congress, who voted for the health care bill. In addition, the times today are becoming violent, as authorities recently conducted a raid on a Christian militia who was making plans to kill police officers. The uprising among different groups isn't about militia revolution, but about ethnic cleansing, and that's the scary part.

The Rage Is Not About Health Care By FRANK RICH

THERE were times when last Sunday’s great G.O.P. health care implosion threatened to bring the thrill back to reality television. On ABC’s “This Week,” a frothing and filibustering Karl Rove all but lost it in a debate with the Obama strategist David Plouffe. A few hours later, the perennially copper-faced Republican leader John Boehner revved up his “Hell no, you can’t!” incantation in the House chamber — instant fodder for a new viral video remixing his rap with will.i.am’s “Yes, we can!” classic from the campaign. Boehner, having previously likened the health care bill to Armageddon, was now so apoplectic you had to wonder if he had just discovered one of its more obscure revenue-generating provisions, a tax on indoor tanning salons.

But the laughs evaporated soon enough. There’s nothing entertaining about watching goons hurl venomous slurs at congressmen like the civil rights hero John Lewis and the openly gay Barney Frank. And as the week dragged on, and reports of death threats and vandalism stretched from Arizona to Kansas to upstate New York, the F.B.I. and the local police had to get into the act to protect members of Congress and their families.

How curious that a mob fond of likening President Obama to Hitler knows so little about history that it doesn’t recognize its own small-scale mimicry of Kristallnacht. The weapon of choice for vigilante violence at Congressional offices has been a brick hurled through a window. So far.

No less curious is how disproportionate this red-hot anger is to its proximate cause. The historic Obama-Pelosi health care victory is a big deal, all right, so much so it doesn’t need Joe Biden’s adjective to hype it. But the bill does not erect a huge New Deal-Great Society-style government program. In lieu of a public option, it delivers 32 million newly insured Americans to private insurers. As no less a conservative authority than The Wall Street Journal editorial page observed last week, the bill’s prototype is the health care legislation Mitt Romney signed into law in Massachusetts. It contains what used to be considered Republican ideas.

Yet it’s this bill that inspired G.O.P. congressmen on the House floor to egg on disruptive protesters even as they were being evicted from the gallery by the Capitol Police last Sunday. It’s this bill that prompted a congressman to shout “baby killer” at Bart Stupak, a staunch anti-abortion Democrat. It’s this bill that drove a demonstrator to spit on Emanuel Cleaver, a black representative from Missouri. And it’s this “middle-of-the-road” bill, as Obama accurately calls it, that has incited an unglued firestorm of homicidal rhetoric, from “Kill the bill!” to Sarah Palin’s cry for her followers to “reload.” At least four of the House members hit with death threats or vandalism are among the 20 political targets Palin marks with rifle crosshairs on a map on her Facebook page.

When Social Security was passed by Congress in 1935 and Medicare in 1965, there was indeed heated opposition. As Dana Milbank wrote in The Washington Post, Alf Landon built his catastrophic 1936 presidential campaign on a call for repealing Social Security. (Democrats can only pray that the G.O.P. will “go for it” again in 2010, as Obama goaded them on Thursday, and keep demanding repeal of a bill that by September will shower benefits on the elderly and children alike.) When L.B.J. scored his Medicare coup, there were the inevitable cries of “socialism” along with ultimately empty rumblings of a boycott from the American Medical Association.

But there was nothing like this. To find a prototype for the overheated reaction to the health care bill, you have to look a year before Medicare, to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Both laws passed by similar majorities in Congress; the Civil Rights Act received even more votes in the Senate (73) than Medicare (70). But it was only the civil rights bill that made some Americans run off the rails. That’s because it was the one that signaled an inexorable and immutable change in the very identity of America, not just its governance.

The apocalyptic predictions then, like those about health care now, were all framed in constitutional pieties, of course. Barry Goldwater, running for president in ’64, drew on the counsel of two young legal allies, William Rehnquist and Robert Bork, to characterize the bill as a “threat to the very essence of our basic system” and a “usurpation” of states’ rights that “would force you to admit drunks, a known murderer or an insane person into your place of business.” Richard Russell, the segregationist Democratic senator from Georgia, said the bill “would destroy the free enterprise system.” David Lawrence, a widely syndicated conservative columnist, bemoaned the establishment of “a federal dictatorship.” Meanwhile, three civil rights workers were murdered in Philadelphia, Miss.

That a tsunami of anger is gathering today is illogical, given that what the right calls “Obamacare” is less provocative than either the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or Medicare, an epic entitlement that actually did precipitate a government takeover of a sizable chunk of American health care. But the explanation is plain: the health care bill is not the main source of this anger and never has been. It’s merely a handy excuse. The real source of the over-the-top rage of 2010 is the same kind of national existential reordering that roiled America in 1964.

In fact, the current surge of anger — and the accompanying rise in right-wing extremism — predates the entire health care debate. The first signs were the shrieks of “traitor” and “off with his head” at Palin rallies as Obama’s election became more likely in October 2008. Those passions have spiraled ever since — from Gov. Rick Perry’s kowtowing to secessionists at a Tea Party rally in Texas to the gratuitous brandishing of assault weapons at Obama health care rallies last summer to “You lie!” piercing the president’s address to Congress last fall like an ominous shot.

If Obama’s first legislative priority had been immigration or financial reform or climate change, we would have seen the same trajectory. The conjunction of a black president and a female speaker of the House — topped off by a wise Latina on the Supreme Court and a powerful gay Congressional committee chairman — would sow fears of disenfranchisement among a dwindling and threatened minority in the country no matter what policies were in play. [BINGO!]It’s not happenstance that Frank, Lewis and Cleaver — none of them major Democratic players in the health care push — received a major share of last weekend’s abuse. When you hear demonstrators chant the slogan “Take our country back!,” these are the people they want to take the country back from.

They can’t. Demographics are avatars of a change bigger than any bill contemplated by Obama or Congress. The week before the health care vote, The Times reported that births to Asian, black and Hispanic women accounted for 48 percent of all births in America in the 12 months ending in July 2008. By 2012, the next presidential election year, non-Hispanic white births will be in the minority. The Tea Party movement is virtually all white. The Republicans haven’t had a single African-American in the Senate or the House since 2003 and have had only three in total since 1935. Their anxieties about a rapidly changing America are well-grounded.

If Congressional Republicans want to maintain a politburo-like homogeneity in opposition to the Democrats, that’s their right. If they want to replay the petulant Gingrich government shutdown of 1995 by boycotting hearings and, as John McCain has vowed, refusing to cooperate on any legislation, that’s their right too (and a political gift to the Democrats). But they can’t emulate the 1995 G.O.P. by remaining silent as mass hysteria, some of it encompassing armed militias, runs amok in their own precincts. We know the end of that story. And they can’t pretend that we’re talking about “isolated incidents” or a “fringe” utterly divorced from the G.O.P. A Quinnipiac poll last week found that 74 percent of Tea Party members identify themselves as Republicans or Republican-leaning independents, while only 16 percent are aligned with Democrats.

After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, some responsible leaders in both parties spoke out to try to put a lid on the resistance and violence. The arch-segregationist Russell of Georgia, concerned about what might happen in his own backyard, declared flatly that the law is “now on the books.” Yet no Republican or conservative leader of stature has taken on Palin, Perry, Boehner or any of the others who have been stoking these fires for a good 17 months now. Last week McCain even endorsed Palin’s “reload” rhetoric.

Are these politicians so frightened of offending anyone in the Tea Party-Glenn Beck base that they would rather fall silent than call out its extremist elements and their enablers? Seemingly so, and if G.O.P. leaders of all stripes, from Romney to Mitch McConnell to Olympia Snowe to Lindsey Graham, are afraid of these forces, that’s the strongest possible indicator that the rest of us have reason to fear them too.

We will again welcome speakers who will share passions, strategies and yes, probably even some anger – all designed to give voice to the belief that America is headed in a very wrong direction in terms of government overreach.
Some people with some very loud media megaphones believe that I will be conducting the equivalent of a Klan rally. This is a lie, and their slanders – driven by their political bigotry – cannot stand.
I don't particularly care if some idiot on the street misreads the Tea Party vigor and invents in it a fictional sinister motivation. But when a succession of people who analyze things for a living weave such vast falsehoods, it is simultaneously sad and infuriating.
Frank Rich of The New York Times and Colbert King of The Washington Post are among the columnists willingly checking their honesty – or their brains – at the door to throw political mud. Either these people are too ignorant to know their charges or false, or they don't care and spit their bile anyway.
King wrote last week of looking at "angry faces" at Tea Party rallies and finding them "eerily familiar," resembling protesters seeking to prevent a black University of Alabama enrollee in 1956.
Rich peppered his column with Third Reich imagery, eventually backing up his claim of racism with comparisons to those who opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Leaving aside for the moment that much opposition to that measure came from Democrats, it cannot be said plainly enough today: These men and their numerous partners in this smear should be ashamed – if nothing else, for logical flaws beneath a fifth-grader.
Their argument is: (A) This movement is filled with vocal people displeased with the way things are going; (B) I can find examples in history of people whose vocal displeasure was fueled by racism. Hence, (C) these people must be fueled by racism.
OK, boys, let's see how you like it: (A) You are fans of ObamaCare; (B) Castro is a fan of ObamaCare, so, (C) you are communists.
Logic and basic human decency prevent me from making that connection seriously. I would like to believe that if these craven critics actually attended a Tea Party event, their testimony would change. But I doubt it. Theirs is a screeching born of panic, the need to demonize a movement rather than debate it.
Is the occasionally tasteless sign, T-shirt or voice found at the occasional Tea Party rally? Of course. But they are but a tiny fraction of the hateful scope of venom heaped on President George W. Bush after the 2000 election or during the Iraq war.
Don't take my word that the Tea Party critics are full of it. Come to QuikTrip Park on April 15. You will find people looking for leaders who will reduce spending, reduce taxes and obey the Constitution. And they don't care what color those leaders are. If the crowd is overwhelmingly white, it's not because the Tea Party has a problem with people of color. It's because so many people of color have a problem with limited government. Anyone in that crowd will gladly make the case to any skeptic of any color.
I have no problem with anyone who disagrees with Tea Party politics. Tell me such limited government is too risky. Tell me ObamaCare is a great idea. Tell me taxes need to be raised. We'll have a lively chat.
But tell me the Tea Party people whom I have come to know and admire are racists, and you are a liar.

President Wilson strategical use of yellow journalism, launched the push of progressivism. Today we see extreme bias in the ways that reports are presented to the public.

To be fair and balanced, we do see this from BOTH sides of the political debating aisles.

My perception is that of a free thinking individual, who holds conservative values as a cornerstone to my decision making. Thus I acknowledge that I have a tendency to be biased to support my beliefs. To that, I give you the above link, showing how recent reports lean to their own Leftist propaganda, while giving token mention to an equal problem of threats towards those with Conservative views.

Like it or not, we live in an age of Hyper Sensitive Yellow Journalism...admit it or not, this is reality...and based on the 2008 elections, we can see that the Yellow Journalism supporting the left has gained power over the people.

Perhaps when Americans stop being swayed by Yellow Journalism from either side and actually learn about the truths, and how they play into what is valuable to them as individuals...then perhaps, the people can regain the power...otherwise, our freedoms will be cast aside, in the name of power and control for Democrats or Republicans.

'Let the violence begin': death threats against Sen. Patty Murray

A Washington State man was arrested Tuesday on charges that he repeatedly threatened to kill US Senator Patty Murray because of her support of the recently passed healthcare reform law.

Charles Alan Wilson of Selah, Wash., left at least 13 expletive-laced messages on an answering machine at Senator Murray’s Seattle office in recent weeks.

Staffers notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Although the caller had been blocking his telephone number, an agent traced the calls through telephone company records to Mr. Wilson’s home telephone.

An undercover agent then telephoned Wilson, posing as a political opponent of the healthcare law. Wilson used several of the same phrases recorded on the answering machine, and agents concluded both voices belonged to the same person.

'There's a target on your back now'

“I hope you realize there’s a target on your back now,” Wilson told Murray in a message recorded on the morning of March 22, according to an FBI affidavit. “There are many people out there that want you dead. Just remember that as you are politicing [sic] for your reelection. It only takes one piece of lead… Kill the … senator! Kill the … senator! I’ll donate the lead. Now that you’ve passed your healthcare bill, let the violence begin.”

The next day, Wilson called again – five times. “I hope somebody kills you, and I hope somebody kills [the president],” he said. “You are signing my death warrant, so I want to sign yours.”

The case illustrates the dangerous and sordid underbelly of the current angry mood in the country. And it underscores the risk that can arise from supercharged rhetoric used by some leaders that seems designed to feed the anger.

Prosecutors note that it is a federal crime to threaten a US government official. Such threats are punishable by 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

“Free speech is the cornerstone of our democratic process, and we are a country of vigorous debate,” said Assistant US Attorney Todd Greenberg. “However, threats of violence have no place in that debate. The threats here crossed the line, and violate the law.”

According to a 10-page FBI affidavit, Wilson said the senator would be a target for the rest of her life.

“How long do you think you can hide?... It could be a senior citizen, could be a veteran, could be a mad momma, an upset momma,” Wilson is quoted as saying. “By your attempts to overtake this country with socialism, somebody’s gonna get to you one way or another and blow your … brains out, and I hope it does happen. If I have the chance, I would do it.”

Wilson added: “You low-life, backstabbing, lying, cheating politicians are going to be held accountable. And hopefully it is with your life.”

Wilson said he was a political independent, neither Republican nor Democrat. “I’m not a tea party bagger,” he said in one message.

“There are a lot more of us. There are a lot of crazy people out there, and your security [guards] may stay with you for a long time, but somebody will get through,” he warned.

Wilson even recorded a message on Easter Sunday. He noted that the senator had given a speech recently in Yakima. “We were outside waiting for you,” Wilson said in the message.

During his conversation with the undercover FBI agent, Wilson admitted that he carries a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver. He said he will not “blink” when confronted. “It’s not a threat, it’s a guarantee.”

Wilson also allegedly told the undercover agent that both Senator Murray and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D), also of Washington, “need to be strung up.”

“I will take no prisoners,” he said. “And I don’t care what they think. They want to come throw me in jail, they can go ahead and do that. That’s fine.”

It was a pretty good prediction. That’s exactly what happened Tuesday.

SAN FRANCISCO - Gregory Giusti, charged with making threatening calls to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, cried Thursday during his first court appearance.

The suspect's mom, Eleanor Giusti, said her son may have gotten worked up over health care reform listening to Fox News.

"Greg frequently gets in with a group of people that have really radical ideas ... which gets him into problems," she told KGO-TV. "I say Fox News, or all of those that are really radical, and he, that's where he comes from."

Giusti, 48, wept when a federal judge refused to release him to a halfway house. He was held without bail while his mental condition is reviewed.

Giusti's arrest came a day after Charles Wilson was busted in Yakima, Wash., for making 16 crank calls wishing for - and in some cases promising - Democratic Sen. Patty Murray's violent death for supporting President Obama's health care bill.

Pelosi herself worried aloud last fall that the overheated emotions on display in the health care fight could trigger violence.

Giusti has been in trouble before. In 2004, he received a one-year jail sentence for threatening to kill a train conductor.

North's Injury Settlement Lost In Savings And Loan Fraud

The 52-year-old man accused of "domestic terrorism" in a case involving the discovery of a string of explosive and incendiary devices found throughout East Texas in the past several months had a deep-seated hatred for the U.S. government.

Officials said the hatred began when he lost a fortune in a bank fraud case in the 1980s.

Threats to the U.S. Treasury, IRS and a multitude of other agencies coupled with the placing of 36 pipe bombs or Molotov cocktail devices in mail collection boxes and other locations led to the Wednesday arrest of Larry G. North of Henderson.

During a news conference Thursday morning, federal, state and local authorities said North was indicted Wednesday after his arrest on one count of unlawful possession of a firearm stemming from a March 23 incident in which a pipe bomb was placed in a postal collection box in front of the Laird Hill Post Office.

"We know he didn't particularly care for the U.S. government by some of the things written on some of the devices we found," Robert Champion, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives senior agent in charge of the Dallas region, said at the news conference.

When asked of a motive for North's actions, one official said the man claimed he was defrauded of a large sum of money by a defunct Henderson bank.


THE SUSPECT
Larry G. North grew up in Rusk County and was called an "average Joe" by those who have known him for years.

But some said North's life changed when an industrial accident left him paralyzed from the waist down.

North won a large settlement after the accident and placed a large portion of the money into the now-defunct General Savings Association in Henderson, officials said.

The president of the association, Mark Hale, was convicted of savings and loan fraud along with several partners in a land developing scheme that defrauded the bank of millions of dollars.

In a Tyler Morning Telegraph story from July 11, 1991, it was reported Hale was sentenced to a three-year prison term for his involvement in the scheme and was given a light sentence because he assisted in the investigation.

North was left to fight the loss of his settlement through lawsuits but never recovered the money from the bank.

Sources close to the investigation said despite North losing the money, he still owed IRS taxes.

Another point that seemed to rankle North was that former President George W. Bush granted Hale a full presidential pardon on April 18, 2006.

"We definitely know why he was mad, but we don't know what set him off in February to cause him to start planting devices," one official said.

Officials are looking into North's actions to see if he was connected with Joseph Stack, an Austin-based engineer, who flew his plane into an IRS building in Austin in February.

Stack left a lengthy note blaming the agency for dissolving his retirement.

However, one official pointed out North did not have Internet capabilities at his home and seemed to be somewhat uninterested in technology, so they do not know how the two men would have communicated.


THE ARREST
ATF, along with FBI agents and other law enforcement agencies, began surveillance on North and observed him placing a pipe bomb into a postal box in the Tanglewood Shopping Center at the intersection of East Fifth Street and Loop 323 Wednesday morning.

As bomb technicians raced to the scene to render the device safe and clear the area, other agents followed North around Loop 323 where he turned onto Corporate Drive and into the RC Airplane park just outside Loop 323 at U.S. Highway 69 North.

It was then the agents decided to make their move.

"We felt it was the right time to go ahead and take him into custody," Champion said.

But after arresting North, agents quickly learned there was another explosive device in his van, prompted the dispatch of another bomb squad to the arrest site and the clearing of the area of peace officers, who were gathering at the nearby Smith County Peace Officer's Building for the monthly luncheon.

Hours later, roads around the location were reopened to traffic while North was in downtown Tyler being questioned by federal agents about the case.

A day after the arrest, members of the law enforcement community again breathed a sigh of relief.

"These devices, over 30 in number, have caused fear in this community nothing short of domestic terrorism. The actions placed the community in fear of performing simple daily tasks like mailing a letter …" Brit Featherton, assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, said. "This community has been plagued for months with, first, the church fires and then these incidents."

Champion and others praised the work of those investigating and responding to the devices found and said they were thrilled no one was hurt or killed.

North remains in custody at the Smith County Jail on the one count, but officials said they are looking at the case, and more charges are sure to be filed against the suspect in the near future.
