I'm having a boy!
Haven't been posting much. This whole pregnancy thing at 35 is craziness. I have had to do a whole lotta bedrest already and I'm only 20 weeks along! Haven't felt up to posting at all, but I've been reading and keeping up with all that is Mavs.
We found out yesterday morning that there are boy parts! Very exciting. It's a good thing now because my girl name was Avery, and it lost a bit of its meaning and appeal Wednesday. Now I have to find a good boy name. I'll tell you what it won't be: Josh or Howard! Any cool suggestions out there on names for a boy? I could sure use them!
Alright, back to the bedresting for me!

congratulations, raefformvp! That's good news. Boys are cool. Hopefully the pregnancy will get easier for you.
as for the name, thing - "Nowitzki" is a good one. If I parse your name correctly, then your kid will be "Nowitzkiformvp" right?

Congrats on the boy parts.
I think you'll either need to go with "Rick" or "Carlisile".

That is very funny, Mary. But, it may also be very accurate. Kudos. Rep

Congrats on the new son. Brandon may become a popular name around Dallas (Bass).

Please do not name him Raef... I would hate to see the poor tyke needlessly pummelled on the playground for the next 18ish years.

I have been wondering how you and your Little One were doing! Please pop in now and then to tell us how you're feeling, and whether you have a top 5 list (of names). Hope Mr. MVP is psychically anticipating your every wish while you're on bedrest!
It's a boy! Yay!
Where to even start on names?! There sure are some good ones around here!

How about a good biblical name like Heman? Zerubabbel and Gad are also nice.
(My wife didn't like those ideas either)

congradulations on your pregnancy and finding out your having a boy!
wasn't it very ecxiting to find out it will be a Y chromosome addition to
your family. that will be life changing - in a good way!
well to be on bed rest it’s not the news anyone wants to get. I hope
that you are doing well and that bedrest is at least 'comfortable' for you.
hope everything will be fine. best wishes for a smooth upcoming months.
Smiles is right... where to start on names? and even harder where to stop ...
to ask for one here aboard a mavs loony bin is definitely crazy and awesome
at once. *2thumbsup*
so my most probably insane suggestion: MAVERICK
my personal suggestion: Matthew
good luck and all the best

ha! I'd never do that to my poor kid!! what kind of name is Raef???
and thanks to all for the well wishes! a couple of you have suggested Matthew for the name. I do really like the name, but I was looking for something a bit less common. and while I love our Dirk, I just don't know how I feel about the name for my boy.

I have always liked that name, but I don't know if I want it for my son. It is kind of harsh sounding. Why does this have to be such a hard decision? My husband and I can't agree on a name to save our lives. I think we will go with Scott as the middle name since that is his first name. I like Lucas Scott a lot. He's unsure. Plus that's the name of a character on One Tree Hill (which is a great show, btw). It has to be good seeing as this kid will be stuck with the name for his entire life. No pressure.

Congrats RaefforMVP!! Such an exciting time!
My wife is expecting our first child in September, we had our 20 week scan on Monday just gone. We didn't want to know the sex, but the nurse kind of smiled when we told her a friend predicted we were having a girl. I'm not quite sure if it was a knowing smile or a "How surprised will they be when they see what's in here!!" (i.e. a boy).

hey OZ,
we also didn't want them to tell us the sex... but we had them make a prediction and put it in a sealed envelope. At one point there was 1 doctor, 1 nurse and 2 lab techs in the room looking at the monitor (they had turned it away from us so that we couldn't see while they were exploring the nether regions), anyway they all burst out laughing and were saying "ok, mystery over, this one is 100% certain, ha ha ha..." etc etc etc... so we guesed it was a boy. (and presumed an, ehem, spectacularly endowed young man at that )
After we had our beautiful girl (and had long since stopped obsessing about the envelope up on our mantle shelf) we remembered the envelope, and opened it to find a perfectly clear snapshot, taken from the perspective of "inside the toilet bowl looking up", and I have to say: yup, they were right! this one was 100% easy, no guess-work, girl.
enjoy this time period, both of you (raef and oz) it is fun!

That might be a good thing. These sorts of things come and go in waves. So choosing a name that's common now might be the same as choosing a name that will be uncommon in a decade or two. Everyone else right now is saying, "nah, too common." So by being the same, you'd be different. On the other hand, if you choose Maximillian, or Roderick, or Ratzinger, or Benedict, you'll probably be choosing one that willbe very common because everyone else is saying, "yeah, I'll choose that cause no one else uses it." THough you might run into issues of commonalities with some of those if you are Catholic. Of course, it might be possible to overthink the whole thing.
anyway, whatever the real name, a good nickname would be "LaFoul". Ooooooh! Zing!
