Mavs Release Fisher
Quote:
The Dallas Mavericks and Derek Fisher are parting company by mutual consent, team sources told ESPN.
The Mavericks on Saturday agreed to release Fisher at the 38-year-old's request, according to the sources.
The move has actually been in the works for a few days, sources said, but the Mavericks asked Fisher to stay with the team until another point guard could be secured. Fisher consented to stay on and played Tuesday night against Philadelphia, only to suffer a strained patellar tendon in his right knee early in the Mavs' home win.
The Mavericks, sources said, will be calling up Chris Douglas-Roberts from the Frisco-based Texas Legends to replace Fisher. Widely rated as the top current NBA prospect in the D-League, Douglas-Roberts is scheduled to play for the Legends in Saturday night's home game against Iowa before joining the Mavericks on Sunday in San Antonio.
In nine games as a Maverick after signing Nov. 29, Fisher averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists in just over 25 minutes per game.
The Mavericks are eager to see if Douglas-Roberts can give them the backcourt scoring and penetration they've been seeking after his time in the NBA's developmental league, but sources said that Dallas is likewise expected to continue exploring potential trade options to strengthen its point guard position, which has been a problem all season.
After the November release of Delonte West, projected starter Darren Collison has been in and out of favor, prompting Dallas to bring in Fisher. Inconsistent youngsters Dominique Jones and Rodrigue Beaubois are the Mavs' other current options at the point.

Rumors are that Fisher will eventually join the Lakers.
Eh well, Douglas-Roberts is tearing up the D-League. I'd like to see what he brings. Can't be any worse than what we're sending at pg here these days anyway...

Fisher to LA sounds right. Morris, Duhon and Blake aren't capable as backup PG.
Oh well, Derek Fisher will go down the drain along with Lamar Odom, Doug Christie, and Antoine Walker.

Weird. At least he was able to help some while he was here. Now, if we can just figure out how to switch doppelganger Darren Collison out for that guy the Mavs had playing point for them the first few games of the season...

Lol, what a joke.
He is the last ex Laker I ever want to see in a Mavs uniform.

My best guess is that this was a 37 y/o PG who was set in his ways clashing with Rick.
Rick is a great coach, but his mixing/matching, "always be ready" mantra is very different from most coaches, and VERY different from the coach Fish spent a ton of of his time playing for.
Overall, I don't care. I don't think this team is very likely to accomplish anything this season, so I'd rather see Collison and other young players be given every chance to succeed (even though watching Collision right now is damn depressing).
And btw, even if both situations were legitimate (and I question both), it's pretty ridiculous that the head of the NBA player's union has now twice used his family as an excuse to get himself out of a contract he willingly committed to.

It is sad but i enjoy watching shart run the team more than collison.
The collison situation is like the money pit. Indiana shows cuban around and cubes says he will take it. And indiana is ovrr laughing and celebrating the whole time.

Im all for giving the young guys a chance. We have nothing to lose. Does this move mean the mavs have waived the white flag on the season?

Fisher hinted at that with his lack of continuity comment before the game in which he hurt his knee.

I wonder how serious that knee injury actually was? Do you think he faked it?

I don't like to say players faked anything but Fisher is strong and almost never misses a game so it kinda make's you think...I whon't be shocked if he end's up with the Lakers.
Oh and Cuban need's to stay away from Ex-Laker players...thoes guys get around that LA lifestyle and almost never want to leave it.

Dirk will have nothing to lose when he is 38.
A 34yo Dirk should not waste his talent with "babysitting"... And fans won't waste their money. That's for sure.

Although he played better than I thought he would I'm happier having Derek Fisher off of my basketball team. I never liked the guy. Like thig mentioned, the way he (in my opinion) leveredged his daughter's situation to force his way out of Utah always left a bad taste in my mouth. Plus I don't think he's good.
Im still not ready to write off all ex lakers though. I liked Devon George as a Mav.

How the hell do you have green boxes. I haven't read one post from you in a while that:
1) seemed like you had a clue about what you're talking about
2) your opinion didn't suck.

Fisher: “I’m here to give everything I have to help this team right now and continue to build as we go through this season.”
Derek Fisher: "This is not a pit stop. This is not kind of the final whatever before I decide to retire soon."

How true is that? If her doctors were really in the California area how can you say that's leveraging? He was making more money in Utah then in LA.

CDR is actually not a bad player, problem is, he's a SG/SF tweener. So where does he even play, with Mayo, Carter, and Marion playing the majority of SG/SF minutes? Carter is a much better floor spacer, and Marion is obviously much better at everything when it comes to being a small forward. I really don't understand why we bring him up. Maybe they want to make Mayo play the point? I don't know.

Dare I say that CDR will be playing some point forward...if he plays at all. The Mavs just need wins and production.
I think it is too late in the game to make Mayo play full time pg but meh. Getting hard to keep caring about this season.

The reason to bring CDR up is that we desperately need somebody who can score in traffic. We have plenty of guards who can drive the lane, i.e., DoJo, Collison, Roddy, but they can't finish. It seems like they either brick it or get blocked.
In the past, CDR has shown some ability to score in that 10 to 15 foot range, off the drive. At 6'7", he has a big advantage over our 6 foot guards in being able to shoot over the top of some opponents. At least give CDR a chance to see what he can do, as I can't see how he could do worse than some of our guards.

Yeah well...
I never was a fan bringing in a veteran player in front of the young guns in a season we might not even compete for a playoff spot so not really bothering me. Hopefully CDR can give us something, everybody cutting into DoJos time is actually a plus.

And yet there are so many games in which he is the best PG on the team. Just shows how terrible Collison really has been.

I don't care that he left but it's still sorry of him to quit on the team like that. I guess he figured he'd be better off somewhere else so he found a way out of his contract, and then made up the lame excuse of prioritizing his family. He's not fooling anybody but he's not a good enough player for anybody to really care.

D-Fish has absolutely now (twice) used his family to get out of a situation he didn't want to be in.
Maybe he was clashing with Rick, but I think it may be even simpler than that. He thought the Mavs might be decent, instead they're now 3 games below .500. He has no interest in being on a non-playoff team.
