That would be a disaster unless Porter falls. Still, there are the Donovan Mitchells of the world that keep things at least somewhat in perspective. Have to have good scouting.

Porter falling like DSJ would definitely be the best-case scenario, but I think guys like Miles Bridges, Jaren Jackson, and Wendell Carter could be good for us too... Hell, Bamba might even slip out of the top-5 as well. I mean, none of these guys are the surefire hits that Ayton, Bagley, Doncic, or Porter would be, but I also don't think any of them will end up being JAGs -- the lotto picks this year seem to have a pretty high floor.

We need another cornerstone player. We also aren't privy to RC's thinking. If he's sticking around another 5 years or so get a guy who fits his style and system. How much value does a traditional big like Bamba still hold? Even Gobert, as great as he is, needs a system designed around his strengths. Is Miles Bridges a more athletic, better playmaking Otto Porter? Can he eventually be a 38-41% NBA 3 point shooter? Will Wendell Carter develop his ancillary offensive game(passing, faceup)and defense ala Horford enough to make him a fringe All-Star type. Jaren Jackson seems to have Myles Turner-like potential.

I think there are plenty of excellent secondary prospects so finishing top 9 wouldn't be a disaster. But it'd be so much nicer to have a shot at one of the top-4, all of whom possess franchise altering potential. Hope we can find a way to maximize ping-pong balls and get lucky.

I regret looking at the top 5 players and getting my hopes up. At this point I'm going to keep saying I'm looking forward to Grayson Allen being a Maverick. That way I can't be disappointed with any other person on this planet being drafted here. If it ends up being Grayson Allen then I'm going to be spending a lot of time in the Primal scream thread.

If we sign Grayson effing Allen then I'm burning my MFFL card and becoming a Rockets fan just out of spite... Might even buy a Harden jersey to wear when I splatter my brains on a wall.

I'd take Allen only if he fell into the top of the 2nd round. I could get over his past transgressions for that value.

When we trade our first for someone like Wilson Chandler and then draft Grayson Allen as our 2nd round pick I shall remind you of this.

And then we can both wait for UD's suicide note. Which will read something like this-

I'm gonna haunt you guys from beyond the grave...... in the form of a Rockets championship.

Of course, it's completely within the power of the MBT to stop this.

Are you saying Lebron is about to retire and play baseball? The only time the rockettes win anything is when the best player on the planet decides to quit basketball to play baseball.

Baseball? Nah, LeBron is gonna take a break from basketball to catch TDs from Dak.

Should clarify, my thoughts behind being OK with drafting him would be only in the scenario he fell in our laps. It's likely that will never be the case as he is being consistently mocked in the 20s and his play is currently not making a case to drop him from there.

I'm truly at a loss. I understand that Rick fails to understand the value of tanking, but you would think someone would force his hand eventually. Dirk or no Dirk, we have a prime opportunity to get a perrenial all star with a top 3 pick (injury risk aside).

Bagley is a better version of Chris Bosh and Ayton is the best 5 prospect (no injury concern) I have seen in a very long time.

While I'm sure I can find some value in the 5+ range picks, the reality is last year's draft was much deeper in tier 1 talent. It went 9 deep. My number 3 on the wish list was DSJ and we got him at 9. That is not the case this year. Can we get a good player at 5-10? Sure. But nothing close to DSJ or potential that we need to move our team in the right direction.

Bamba reminds me of Tyson Chandler.

Super long, super athletic, and will likely to take five years to become a star.

I agree I just don't think it's isolated to Rick. I think it's systemic from Cuban to Donnie and on down. They just don't want to fold the tent up and full on rebuild. It's this half measure plan of develop the talent of DSJ while trying to "keep the winning culture". If by some miracle it works out then cool but unless we draft a Kawhi like talent outside of the top 9 this isn't going to work IMO.

Whats most impressive, aside from his ridiculous reach, is he already shows a nice outside touch and the beginnings of a decent face up game. He has a nice touch and as he gets stronger should be able to develop some post game. He could wind up an unholy cross of Gobert and Ibaka only with a better face up game and ability to put the ball on the floor. Could easily see him developing Ibaka like range out to 3. Wouldn't surprise me if he winds up top-3 along with Bagley and Ayton. That's with Doncic, who looks to me like the European Rick Barry, somehow going 4th!

Man, what a crazy draft at the top. We desperately need to find a way to lose games and land a top 5 pick. The importance of this cannot be stressed enough.

that's the problem with the NBA. There's always talent, but the the guys who really change the game are rare and aren't spread out evenly. Some years you get 5-7 stars. Some years you get none.

Scouting and getting a good pick are only part of it. The other half no one talks about is luck and what year you draft in. No matter how good your scouting is and how high your pick, if you get a first rounder in 2003, you are probably getting a star (LeBron, Wade, Melo). If you draft in 2004, your best case scenario is Dwight Howard. In 1997 there was Billups, Duncan, and McGrady, but not a single other player made an allstar game.

This year is going to be one of those years like 2003 and 1998. There will be at least 4-6 stars that change the game that come out in the top 10-15. I'm afraid our ability to tread water at 5-5 will cost us one of those guys who can change the game for the next 10-20 years.

Everyone here knows my #1 pick last year was Dennis Smith Jr, but I think Ayton, Bagley, Doncic, and Porter are all better players than him, with Bamba probably being about on par.

What I wonder is where the 6-14 picks would go in last year's draft... Would guys like Jaren Jackson, Robert Williams, and Miles Bridges crack the top-5, or would they still end up going at about the same place they're projected to go this year? They each have obvious warts, but so did Lonzo Ball and he ended up going #2 overall.... Just wondering if we're underrating some of these guys because they don't have the same franchise-changing potential as the top-5. There could still be some fringe All-Stars in the 6-14 range (Harrison Barnes types).

Lol he has the ball almost at the level of the top of the backboard before he hammers it down. It'd be fun to see him in a dunk contest.

Big time calls in that last paragraph with so little college basketball having been played to date. The pre-draft boards are going to change drastically in the months to go before the draft.

You're dead-on about the likes of Bagley and Ayton, but who's to say, at this point in time, that the draft can't be top-10 heavy? Players aren't allowed to develop anymore?

If players stuck around for any amount of time I might put some stock into the idea of development. I tend to watch the prospects starting their senior year and summer ball... you know the franchise altering talent when you see it. Last year you had the best freshman class in a decade. This year you have 3-4 players who have star potential that warrants going "all in". Is it guaranteed that they fulfill their potential? No, but I would argue it's much more favorable than hoping you land a superstar FA or Leonard/Mitchell prospect. Can you do it? Sure, but it would be much less risky to just commit to getting a top 5 pick.

With DSJ and Alton, you have a very good chance to compete in 3 years.

As the season goes on, it's getting harder for us to go full on tank-mode. The Clippers and Grizzlies have had serious injuries to their star players which brings their quality of play down to true top-3-draft-pick status. The Mavs are nice and healthy, developing team chemistry, young players are gaining confidence, and vets are playing like quality players again. In order for us to go full tank, I think the only way we can tank without it being blatantly obvious that we are throwing games is to make a trade of multiple players ... Wes, JJB, DH, and NN ... and then start playing more G-League guys.

Agreed. But I guess I'm not as on board with the side that thinks we got lucky with DSJ at 9. And I think you semi-agree since you said that draft was 9 deep. I am saying I think this draft has the same potential, and that we are getting carried away by the top end talent. However, that top end talent is definitely better than last year, so I get what you're saying.

I just think it will be very hard to get into the top 4-5 given just how much worse off other teams are, and it appears it is going to get even more crowded given injuries around the league. I'm just not sold this FO and roster is going to get there. Sucks, but that's the state of where we stand among the absolutely terrible teams out there. I think we end up around 6-8 and grab a really good piece to develop along with Barnes and DSJ.

Well there was that article(I can't rem if it was posted here or not) where an un-named scout said he would put the top 5 in this coming draft ahead of everyone drafted last year. So that is why I'm so disappointed, as good as last years draft was there was a few real game changers from a prospect perspective this year. We will be a 6-10 seed for quite a while at this rate.

I understand the point here. I just want to add that I don't think all 5 would be above Fultz and Tatum. Ball was a joke to go 2 overall. Jackson and Fox would be behind the top 5 here, I'd think. But then again, in a redraft, DSJ and Mitchell would get some serious consideration to go 2 and 3.

Big time wins last night for some of our competitors for the #1 seed. Mavs now need to find ways to lose to ensure we do the right thing.

His teammate and fellow projected 1st rounder, Andrew Jones, went down with a fractured wrist the game before they faced Michigan. There's hope he can come back prior to Big XII play. Jones is a solid scorer and creates spacing, so it'll be interesting to see if there's more help defense on Bamba in these next couple of weeks. Either way, Jones is on my radar for 2nd round should he drop.

It seems we are starting to get some traction on PGs in this draft. Sexton, Young, and Duval should continue to rise.

Potential New Unicorn. Not many guys with his length, quickness and skill-set floating around. Would have a hard time choosing between Doncic, Bamba, Porter if he's fully healthy.

Its beyond imperative that we find a way to get a top-5 pick, or at least as many ping-pong chances as possible.

It's getting awfully crowded at the bottom, might be difficult to land a top-5 pick...
