-he was the best shot creator (both for himself and for others) left at that point in the draft

he doesn't have the upside of Mitchell Robinson or Gary Trent Jr., but Brunson is sure to have 10-15 years of solid, heady play in the NBA
Given that we have heard the confidence in fo about picking up a center in f.a. I dont think it was terrible, but I thought yogi was a solid backup and hoped Curry would stick around. I just hope we didnt draft him and not see him all season.

I'm really hoping we have a hidden gem in Kostas. Between one of the two red headed step brothers we have in Kostas and Curry surely one of them has to pan out.

I would have prolly gone with the risk/reward in Robinson. I mean hell we are being rumored with DJ/Howard/Cousins... so it's clear we are desperate for a center.

But I get why they didn't. They just went through some problems with Noel. And this kid committed to a&m and then decommitted when his godfather left their staff. Then Committed to WKU because he was on their staff and then a month before the semester he left. Then to my knowledge he went to campus then left then came back, attended classes and practices then left for good and didn't even tell the staff or anyone for that matter, just flat out packed his shit and left without a word. That's why he couldn't transfer to Kansas, he had already attended classes and gotten FA with WKU. Then to top it off he canceled his combine workouts and interviews and didn't give medicals. I mean... it's by far one of the most bizarre stories ever for me. Top 10 talent(which is why i'd take the chance) but wow what a headache.

But yeah I blame Noel for why we didn't take a chance.

OK, is it possible? Yeah, but seriously that is slightly above stupid. Most mocks had him at the end of the second round, so we drafted about where he was projected to go. He fits with what we trying to develop in young, athletic, big wingspan, can play multiple positions. And you are talking about 3 free agency periods where no telling what will happen. IMO it's much more likely that Magic gets fined for tampering again trying to lure him to the Lakers.

It’s tampering to run a good franchise and employing people other players may know.

It’s why Cavs fun a terrible franchise and only sign players like JR Smith and Kevin Love who have no friends or NBA siblings— just to avoid even the appearance of tampering.

So Mikal Bridges has a hitch in his shot now... Markelle Fultz 2.0? https://twitter.com/VUCoachJWright/s...12829062840322

Wow the Sixers work fast. They only had his rights 30mins and look at the change in jumper. That trade saved his career, any longer and I'm not sure he's hitting rim with those shots.

I'm sure he is just doing that as practice, but it does take entirely too long to release the ball.

76ers made out like bandits. To get high floor and high ceiling Zhaire Smith and an additional first rounder for Mikal (who let's be honest will likely be a Trevor Ariza clone down to the inconsistent jumper) was an absolute steal.

Seriously, this guy is two years younger than Bridges too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN_h...&frags=pl%2Cwn

I'll finally add that I believe the Nuggets will long regret the day they passed on Smith for MPJ.

So have we signed anybody to our summer league team? Only name I've heard is St John's guard Phil Greene IV. Guys during the season were talking about how the Mavs are masters of adding undrafted talent like Yogi & Motley... I was actually getting excited because of all the interesting prospects who went undrafted & we only sign one guy?

Just because we didn't add them to SL team doesn't mean we won't find the guys we want and bring them to camp. Yogi wasn't on the SL team. We also have 3 draft picks going this year instead of 1-2. Coincidentally last year we lost brandon paul to the spurs after he did so well with us. So getting them in SL is less important to me than getting them into camp. You want both but we have time still and it's not like we don't already have a few young guys as it is. We still have Motley, Jones, Brunson, Kostas, Spalding to go with Greene now. They probably planned on Andrew Harrison and Clavell but both got snagged. I'm not rly worried about it yet. Most teams only have 5-7 players currently listed from what I can see. So if Motley and Jones are coming and we get the usual visits from Warney and Ashley and other legends players we might only have 1-2 spots as it is.

Also in the past we went to multiple leagues and so we signed players for 2 different squads. This year we are only participating in Vegas.

In the FA thread, I thought you made a good post about how I should look at spending cap space as a tool to promote to players around the league that the Mavs are in it to win it & how filling out the roster with cheap role players isn't really practical.

This seems to be a different approach here. I don't understand the change in philosophy. Also, you talk like the Mavs have some secret stash of players somewhere to sign. Pretty much all of the guys you would want to sign have been snatched up. It's kinda baffling.

Billy Preston for one is a guy I would of loved to take a look at. He's essentially Mitchell Robinson, uber-talented & former McDonald's All-American in 2017, but we got to see precious little of him on the court this past year. The Mavs scouts as good as they are, they're not psychic. The only way to solve that mystery is to get him on the court & see what he has. Now, Cleveland has that opportunity & we do not. Btw, Preston is a very likeable kid. If you spent any time watching the hours of interviews Draft Express did at the 2017 McDonald's All-American game, you know Billy Preston is a guy that makes friends easily. He's the type of guy you want on your team trying to lure his friends to join the Mavs in FA. Really hate we didn't sign him.

Several others we passed on too. I just don't understand leaving the summer league roster so thin. Particularly with bigs. Why not take a look at Brandon McCoy? Did we get outbid? Bucks got to him first?...

No Preston, No McCoy, find me a big with some upside & give me a look at him for summer league plz.

Even if he just develops a corner 3, defense, and can rim roll he's kinda what the league is all about.

He does. I wanna see how well it translates to the sl games. I can see him being like Mot and Powell where they are above the D league level before too long.

Looks like he's been working on Dirk's one legged fadeaway around the 3:30 mark. He has a pretty slow release and needs to get more arc on the ball, but he appears to have a decent shooting stroke. Dude looks like he has better handles than Wes!

Haha. That's not saying much tho.

@ESPNForsberg: Can’t make this stuff up: Celtics say rookie first-round pick Robert Williams, who was introduced here Friday, missed his flight back to Boston and was not present for the start of summer league practice today. Williams already overslept an introductory conference call.

If I were them, I might seriously consider not signing him, just failing to make an offer. Can a team even do that?

They might be saving themselves some serious headaches & a nice chunk of change.

If he makes the league, he is out after his rookie contract

@ESefko: From the Sixers: Former SMU standout Shake Milton suffered a spondylolysis (stress fracture) in his back during this year’s pre-draft process. He is in rehab. and will not participate in NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Milton will be re-evaluated in approximately three weeks.

Bet the Celts already regret not taking literally any of the ten picks after Williams.

tap2390, I'm not too worried for the Celtics. They're gonna rip apart the East this year.

I know! The 76ers will be a mere speedbump as built. What’s crazy is we’d probably be competing for a 4-6 seed in the East. We’ll be lucky to hit 8 or 9 even with all our improvements.

Shake Milton had a stress fracture in back before draft.

Might be why he dropped so far

Also, stress fractures are bad news. Cost Seth Curry the whole season and that was leg and not spine.

@ESefko: Kostas Antetokounmpo on what he thought when the Mavericks drafted him with the 60th and last pick of the draft: "“They got to 59 and I was like, I might as well get something to eat.”

Both of those Atetdokounmpo kids are hilarious and just constantly happy. It’s hard not to cheer for them.

Jaren Jackson Jr in his Summer League debut tonight:

29 pts
8 triples
3 rebs
2 blks
23 min

and most importantly 0 fouls.

God Damn, wish he was a Mav... When all of that Memphis trades the 4th pick & Parsons talk was going on, I was having wet dreams of the Mavs with Doncic & JJJ. Damn.

I had him ranked #3 behind Ayton and a healthy MPJ (so #2 basically)... The kid is gonna be for real.

Would have busted a nut if we walked out of the draft with Doncic and JJJ -- would have traded Barnes for Parsons in a heartbeat to make it happen.
