Default GDT: game 22 (21?) - Suns (10-8) at Mavs (8-12) 7:30 pm NBATV

Mavs have another game scheduled. Not sure if they'll decide to play, though. Anyone optimistic about this one?

But hey, Kleber is back. It will be the first time this entire year where we have a full roster. We had everyone but KP. Then we had KP, but were missing half the team. Then we got back everyone but KP. This will be the first game with everyone.

Mavs win if:
- KP won't be trigger happy bricking threes.
- KP won't be a statue in defense and rebounding
- THJ won't be trigger happy bricking threes.
- Luka just needs to be his usual self.

The Mavericks need more from Josh Richardson
In his three games since returning from COVID, Richardson is averaging seven points, two rebounds, and one assist while shooting 39 percent from the field. Even worse, he’s missed all seven of his attempts from beyond the arc. It stands to reason all the players who missed time are working to get into game shape, but the Mavericks are in a serious skid and need their offseason acquisition to step up.

Can WCS follow up a great performance?
Consistency is essentially the crux of Cauley-Stein’s career, and Monday he’ll get a chance to follow up a 14 point (7-of-8), nine-rebound, and four-block performance. The biggest question is if Carlise will give Cauley-Stein slack with Porzingis, Kleber and Powell all in the rotation. All players carry their own narratives, but if Carlisle is going with the “What have you done for me lately?” mentality, Cauley-Stein deserves a longer leash.

RC for all the yapping about hard work and defense, WCS is a prime example of that and should be getting solid minutes vs the Suns. Would really question him as a coach if WCS got the back burner of the 4 big men.

THJ gets all kinds of rope, and he's only good for 1 out of 3 or 4 games. WCS can be more impactful, but guys like him and Green have to play perfect. A mistake or two, and they'll end up at the end of the bench. Stupid arse personnel management. SSDD

JRich's shot looks jacked up to me. It seems like his elbow is out during the shooting motion and I'm not sure how he ever shot great from three. Maybe a little adjustment in his form would help.

Windhorst Podcast segment on the Mavs...
Scouts told him Mavs don’t play hard.
Most concerning team in the NBA right now.

Wow

Windhorst stated this came from a scout.

That's not something to just ignore.

The biggest question is who's job is it to make sure your team is prepared to play and they compete hard when they show up?

You never hear this about Miami or Utah for example regardless of what is going on.

I mean, is this a surprise? A scout sees what Mavs fans and NBA fans see?

Maybe the departure of Stephan Silas? Mavs have lost three (that I am aware of) assistant coaches over the years (Stotts, Casey, and Silas) and maybe that has had some impact on team performance over the years?

Mavs were playing well defensively, and then they lost four hustle players to Covid, and inserted KP in their place. That’s when things went south.

The optimistic take is that those four players had to come back basically without any practice. They lost a lot of their conditioning and it's hard to go from laying in bed to playing at an NBA level. Playing B2Bs with games so often-- that's rough even for guys with conditioning. They may take a few more days/a week to get back in shape.

KP, on the other hand-- he looks like an absolute mess. He's not hustling and he's totally lost. He hasn't been high-effort and he hasn't been effective in the offense. A player like that absolutely kills a team. Players get frustrated when one guy is just giving low effort and not doing his part.

I honestly can't figure out an optimistic take on KP. He had a month of training with the team last year. He played 12 games for us before being injured again. He should know his role and how to play. He played 9 of 11 games this year and doesn't look any more willing/able to contribute now than he did in his first game back.

That’s how he shoots. He’s never been great from 3. I think his best season was around 37% so basically his best season is maybe a little better than league average? Not sure what league average actually is these days.

I'm pretty sure he (KP) hears the complaints.

He's had a few days off to re-charge and clear his head.

Getting Kleber back tonight might be a blessing in disguise because it'll force him to play closer to the basket on offense.

His 1st 5 games back he did make progress from game to game although his defense was still lacking.

Maybe that one game that they sat him out threw off his rhythm because doing those 1st 5 games I think he was shooting closer to 50% if I'm not mistaken.

Don't want to make excuses for him but some guys are just wired differently than others.

Yeah. KP has been bad. The optimistic take, is that he was good last year, and he’s only a few games back from injury. We just have to hope it’s a psychological thing that can be fixed, and not a permanent physical thing that can’t. If anything, his shot will likely start dropping.

Maxi would have helped in the Utah games, which were especially rough for Porzingis. If I remember correctly, Maxi was effective against Gobert last season, because Gobert was drawn away from the basket on defense.

KP was underwhelming last season until Powell got injured, then things started turning around. He took it to another level when Luka was out.

I think KP needs to be jump started early in the game like Dallas41 keeps suggesting. Run some plays for him and feed him the ball to get him involved and offensively aggressive early. This does NOT mean stand around the 3-pt line waiting to jack up a 3 on a catch and shoot. He's not a 7'3" sg in case that wasn't obvious.

I think that should be the S5 from now one

Luka
Josh
DFS
Kleber
KP

Great size and defense. Also DFS finally not hunting guards or being undersized against PF. THJ subbing in when KP leaves early in the 1st and 3rd to provide scoring

Bro, did you not watch the last game? Down the stretch DFS was guarding Cp3...and getting obliterated for 16pt, 5ast.

I don't think any lineup should be set in stone, but I don't hate this one at all. I still wish we could upgrade DFS. He has no handle whatsoever.

Small, quick guards like Paul can just drive right around DFS. He's always been that way because he has long legs and does not have the requisite lateral quickness to stay with such guards.

Yup. Which puzzle the hell out of me because it was obvious and I don't get millions to coach this team. Rick should know better.

Maybe try Green if JRich has to guard Booker? Paul will school the rookie but maybe the rooks energy and lat quickness can slow Paul down. I assume Paul will would get Green fouled out quickly.

I don't think any lineup should be set in stone, but I don't hate this one at all. I still wish we could upgrade DFS. He has no handle whatsoever.
Well from our roster options i like it the most. Specially with KP leaving early in the 1st and 3rd so you can bring THJ early in too.

and hopefully soon in the future Green is better than DFS

I still don't like this starting 5 actually. I say adjust according to our opponents. I want to see Boban play more. He should have played AND started against the Jazz in both games.

Also as much as I love Kleber, I think he should be coming off the bench. KP should not be the starting Center. He should be a Power Forward. Start WCS. Our bench will be much better with Trey Burke, THJ, and Maxi Kleber all coming off the bench.

At times DFS can be very exciting, but I don't like giving him too many minutes. 20 to 25 at max. Honestly, I'd prefer 0 the way he's playing right now. he needs a scare. He needs to earn his minutes. Right now he is one of the biggest reasons for why we suck.
