Music to my ears

Last year the Dallas Mavericks had the most efficient offensive season in the history of the NBA. This season they wouldn’t mind setting some out-of-this-world records on the defensive end of the floor.

Thus, while the Mavs have been creating tons of excitement while ripping up and down the hardwood with the greatest of ease, the plan this season is to shift into overdrive and add some much-needed defensive flavor to their arsenal. A defensive mindset, coach Rick Carlisle believes, is a better recipe conducive to winning a championship than a team just hanging its hat on being an offensive juggernaut.

“When you establish that you’re a galactically successful offensive team, but below average defensively, that’s not going to win you a championship,” Carlisle said on Tuesday. “I don’t believe there’s ever been a team that’s won a title in the NBA that hasn’t been a good defensive team.

Bunch of whining over Jae Crowder who said he turned down more money from us to join Phoenix.

I'm all about giving the FO shit for not being good at FA, but I'm not even remotely upset that we didn't get him. We have plenty of defensive wings now.

Barea may just find a roster spot. Iwundu out?
My opinion is that it will be one of the following guys:

Tyrell Terry
Nate Hinton
Tyler Bey

2 of those 3 will earn the 2-way spots.

Jae Crowder is kinda overrated. He got hot in Miami down the stretch in a contract year. But his career has been spotty outside of a nice run in Boston. He’s a versatile (but overrated) defender and decent but streaky floor spacer, which is what makes him a slightly better than replacement level player. I like who we got instead.

We need to cut someone if Barea sticks:

Something has gone terribly wrong if we put Terry on 2 way deal for JJB. Love the dude but someone better send help to the MBT.

Terry officially signed already. He got a four year deal with guaranteed money that required part of the MLE to legally offer. The contract is similar to Brunson’s, and the ability to add an extra year of cheap team control is one of the reasons the Mavs prefer early 2nd round picks over late 1st round picks.

There is no chance he gets moved to a two way deal, in my opinion. I’m not even sure it would be legal to do that.

All signs are still pointing to this one year guaranteed deal being a “gold watch“ from the Mavs to Berea. I think it’s a way for them to pay him a nice chunk of change after they cut him and he transitions to coaching.

But, if he does end up making the team, my guess is that Iwundu or Boban would be the sacrificial lamb, based simply on the idea that they represent the lowest one year salaries on the team. I really don’t think it’s going to come to that though.

EDIT: Just double checked, and Iwundu is on a TWO year deal, so it’s probably not gonna be him. It would pretty much have to be Boban, WCS or Brunson...and I honestly cant see them cutting any of those guys for Barea. Just doesn’t seem plausible.

I haven't seen any trade scenarios suggested...

Probably a small percent chance but maybe some team is waiting to see how Powell and Brunson look coming back from injuries before making a deal with the Mavs.

Could be something no one saw coming for Lavine or Hield...

I read somewhere today that Buddy isn't guranteed to start this year per Luke Walton.

So who knows maybe the Mavs use a combination of Powell, Brunson and THJ for those two guys who would be legit #3 options.

I get why this sort of thing is making people nervous, but I don't see any way JJ makes the final roster.

How do you mean other teams play Luka different with JJ on the court? Not sure the direction of the question, but I'll strongly suggest people should take it easy on the idea that we have enforcers to keep Luka or anyone else from getting hard fouled or yelled at etc. With all due respect, No one in the league gives a shit about us getting tougher players. These guys don't fight, the NBA is soft and the refs are unpredictable.
I hope JJ(Johnson) is in the same mold as Draymond Green, the Morris twins, Harrell, Pat Beverly, and Steven Adams. More like Charles Oakley/Joakim Noah than “Bad Boys” Rick Mahorn/Bill Laimbeer. These guys are irritants to the opposition and tend to draw a certain amount of attention away from superstars because of their physical play. They get under your skin and hopefully trigger you to complain incessantly to the refs. They are a distraction. Irritants are not a necessity, but if you have one amazing superstar that draws 95% of the attention from an opposing team, it seems to me a player like JJ can be valuable. It may only be for a short episode in the game when Luka is getting beat up and his emotions are starting to unravel a bit, inserting JJ into the game gives the other team another player to think about because he will physically insert himself into the flow of the game by leaning on, hacking, pushing, and trash talking the opposing players as well as diving for loose balls and drawing charges. So, it’s not being a “bodyguard” or an “enforcer” but more of providing a "hard-to-ignore" element to the game that the Mavs have lacked since perhaps Deshawn Stevenson (Rondo should have been another).

The fact is, I have not seen JJ play all that often and he might not be the player I just described. That is why I am not sure if he is an end of the bench guy, a starting PF, or a rotation player that gets 10-12 minutes a game.

Mavs will wait and see whether or not Giannis signs the supermax by 12-21. If he doesn't, then the Giannis dream is still alive, and they won't take on any long term salary this season via trade, so they can make room for him, in the event he wants to sign with Mavs. If Giannis signs supermax, then i think Mavs would entertain trades to improve their team, e.g., acquire a 3rd star, since Giannis would not be available as a FA.

Yeah, maybe...but I think what Dallas41 was suggesting is that something might happen imminently that could help clear a roster spot at the beginning of the season for Barea.

What you're talking about would involve at least one of their big, expiring contracts (Richardson, Hardaway, Johnson) and probably wouldn't happen until the trade deadline.

OK got it. But, IMO, as part of clearing a roster spot, they won't decrease cap space for next summer (assuming Giannis has not signed supermax). They wont sacrifice Giannis dream to open a roster spot. I suppose this is obvious. It just seems JJB will be moving to a coaching spot. Lots of players for him to work with to develop where he could make a big impact on the franchise. e.g., Green, Tyler, Bey, Hinton. Not sure he is ready to stop playing. The wildcard is if Doncic wants him on the team this year as a player, then something will happen to keep him on the roster. I would hate that, but maybe its about keeping Luka happy

This.

Unless teams are absolutely desperate to improve for game one, it always makes sense to shop until the last minute.

Even the Rockets are probably going to push their trades as late into the season as possible.

An unhappy player doesn't cost you money. Making a foolish trade when you can wait and get a better one can.

When the league tips on Dec. 22, the Brooklyn Nets will host the Golden State Warriors before the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers do battle, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Apparently 48 NBA players have tested positive for Covid. I'm really worried that the entire season will be derailed.

Houston has agreed to trade Russell Westbrook to Washington for John Wall and a first-round pick, sources tell ESPN.

Seems like one of those deals that doesn't really make either team better, but they both just had to do it because they had no other options. Nobody else wants their disgruntled, insanely overpaid "superstars." Houston got the draft pick, so they automatically "win" the trade- by default, practically.

What will be interesting going forward is to see what happens with Beal. He's my dream target assuming Giannis is off the table. But the Wizards don't seem like they're looking to trade him, and I imagine other teams could easily outbid the Mavs.

I mean I see why the Wiz did it. They got the better player. I'd say they got better. I have no idea why the Rockets did it unless they know they writing is on the wall and just want to rebuild.

They should expand rosters this season. Add 2 Covid-19 slots so there are 19 slots altogether. Then Mavs don't even have to cut a player. They just have to add 1 more!
