Mavs adding someone new?
sup fellas,
i was just reading the espn rumor central, and it says the "depleted mavs may add a new player" Obviously i'm not an espn "insider", or i would know who they are talking about.
Have any of you guys heard any news about this new adonis? Hopefully this hasn't aleady been brought up.
Discuss.

I hadn't heard anything about it in a while.
I know when Griffin went down names like Hoidberg and Sprewell were thrown around in the papers, but obviously nothing came of it. Now that our injured guys are slowly dwindling back I doubt they'll be looking to pick anyone up.

Like I said in the other threads about this, the Mavs would have to drop a player. D league players count on the 10 man roster. Which means they have 10 active players. If they want to pick up someone, they have to drop someone. Who do you want to drop to pick up someone who has been sitting on their couch all year and won't even be able to play in the playoffs.

Here's what Insider had to say about it last tuesday in their 'Rumor Central' area:

Dallas
Depleted Mavs May Add A Player
Mar 14 - Due to a rash of injuries the Mavericks may consider signing a player, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. According to the newspaper, those available are Mateen Cleaves, Erick Strickland, Wesley Person, Latrell Sprewell and Bryon Russell.
The Dallas Morning News reports while Sprewell and Fred Hoiberg are out there, three lesser-known names might make more sense: Gerald Fitch, who the Rockets waived yesterday, Will Bynum and Ime Udoka.

It looks like they were just basing this on the original FWST article that they linked to...

Under collective bargaining rules, Sprewell can sign with any playoff-bound team up until the last day of the season and still be eligible for the postseason. (Players who already were on NBA rosters but who were waived in-season must have been waived by March 1 to be playoff-eligible.)
----
The Mavericks called about two weeks ago when they were dealing with a flurry of injuries.
"He said he would call back the next day. He never did. So we dropped the idea," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said via e-mail.
The Spurs also put in a call to Gist's office about a month ago, though nothing came of it.
i got this off an espn.com article about where the hell is sprewell

What was Cuban thinking? The Mavs are over the cap. Sprewell has to feed his kids. Stackhouse is bad enough. Keep Sprewell out of here. I don't think we will have to anyway since we're over the cap and he still think he can start in this league and he'd probably be our 3rd string 3 or 2. Same goes for the Spurs which is why he didn't return the phonecalls.

yeah thats a classic line hes gotta "feed his kids". Did you ever see that interview with randy moss, when they asked him how he was gonna pay his fine to the NFL a couple years back(vikings)?? He said "when your rich you dont write checks", the reporter asked him "well randy if you dont write checks how are you gonna pay them", randy replied "Straight Cash Homey"......so funny

Anything extra wouldnt hurt... too bad Spree is too old and too proud to admit he cant be a starter on a good team like Dallas, but he could definitely be the additional boost off an already impressive bench for a championship season.

yeah, in that article it said he was making like 14.6 million in the last year of his contract, and now he would only make the veteran minimum which was like 1 million a year...it also said he was pissed because, he was waiting for the lakers and timberwolves to workout a deal, mean while detroit, and the rockets and a couple other teams were interested in him, but he was holding out for the lakers, then the lakers deal feel through, which at that time the other teams found other players to sign, which left sprewell high and dry..probably high--literally..haah
