Dennis Smith Jr. Appreciation Thread
Kinda sucks that he'll be in a Knicks uniform during the Dunk Contest.

He will always be remembered as the guy that landed us KP!
But in all seriousness, let him have all the dunks in the MSG. It was an unfortunate situation for him in his second year. Stuff happens... I hope he thrives in New York.

Yeah, this trade was probably finalized and they put that out to stop their fans from going absolutely apeshit... which so far doesn't seem to be helping.

Good luck Dennis! I think his electric athleticism will help him thrive in the bright lights of New York. So happy to have Luka and KP though!!

I was stoked when we got him. I still think he goes on to have a solid career. Getting Luka made him expendable though. Thanks for all the highlight reel dunks, Woodslanger!

You're being generous. I would have said that before he pulled that primadonna bit.
He may be a great player in time, but he was drafted for physical tools and didn't want to be patient and learn for us. There are dozens of players with amazing bodies and potential that also refuse to mature.
Maybe a new team will help him grow.
At the very least, he'll get 30-35FGA for New York and will play in the biggest market in the US. If he is unhappy, it's his own fault.
Will they win 35 games for the next few years? Probably not. Will he get to put up 25-8-8 in a big market? Sure.

But having DSJ and cap space will help them sign 2 max free agents, right? DSJ, KD, and Kyrie?

In all seriousness, good luck to the kid. I see him being a guy that puts up numbers and has a long career even if he doesn't win many playoff games even in the east.

It is easier to hope he thrives being in the east.
Could've been a major foe if he'd have been traded to a WC team.

I was excited for him. Raw talent, athleticism, what's not to like? However, the NBA is littered with talented guys with poor attitudes, and I soured on him immediately with his prima donna act, especially the timing. JJB had just gone down, and DSJ was going to get even more minutes and opportunity moving forward, but his ego couldn't handle it. He's young, so I'll hope he matures, but I don't think it'll happen until much later in his career, if ever. IMO, he'll end up being like JJB for the majority of his career - a backup, drive and dish spark plug off the bench - IF he can get his BBIQ up. This is no slight on JJB's solid career, but I don't think DSJ will get the most out of his raw talent. Bu bye, and thanks for that magical TD on center stage right before the TDL!

I do wonder if he took that hiatus knowing he was about to be traded. Dealt with it poorly, but I find it hard to believe he did it just because. We might find out a bit more later on.

Great prospect. One of the most gifted athletes I’ve ever seen. Sucks it couldn’t work here. Hope his career flourishes though it might not be with the Knocks.

Despite all the hype for Luka we shouldn't forget that DSJ was the pick that officially started the rebuild and youth movement for us. The last one we were genuinely excited about might have been, Roddy B? So despite it not working out he might be part of a new chapter in Dallas Basketball history.
Also saw this on Twitter:
Quote:
I just got off the phone with @Dennis1SmithJr he said “he’s super happy that he’s finally with a team that wants him there.” NYK bout to be fun to watch. All that youth & cap space. Knicks fans finally should be happy about their future. Zion, KD & Kyrie.

Maybe there was more to the Rick and DSJ rift in the end. But right now this doesn't speak for him as a person. Yes, it was unfortunate that we got Luka, but imho the front office as a whole never "not wanted him" in Dallas. I hope he finds what he hopes for in NY. But tbh., if they get Kyrie over the summer and DSJ still doesn't have "his own" team, who effing cares.

Dennis Smith Jr. wishes he got traded to Knicks before they played the Mavericks for the last time this season.
"I just want to play them," he said. "They wanted to package me, DJ, & Wes and send us over here. I just wish they would've did it before we didn't play them anymore."
|
What a whiny little twit.
Dude request a trade and plays sick to force his way out and now he is mad he doesn’t get to play against us

Now it’s “good riddance” but he was our only piece we had last season. Now he’s a bum lol. The guy is upset. Should he apologize for his feelings?

Nah. It’s just immaturity which is understandable considering A. His age and B his lack of experience. As you see from many Vets comments, they understand that while the Basketball side fees like family, it ultimately serves the Business.
It’s not easy, but it’s real and it translates to the same struggles everyone faces in their workplace.
I do think he has always lacked a certain level of accountability. He wants to ball like he’s at a pick up game. He has some of the worst drive and kick out passes I’ve seen. Constantly fumbles the ball and attempts ridiculous shots.

That's not the point. And all we know is that the Mavs wanted to make it work while DSJ acted like a diva. Sure he is upset, but why with the Mavs? The situation was unfortunate for everyone! Sorry we didn't pass on a what looks like a generational talent in the draft that happens to be infinitely better than you?
His whole demeanor leaves so much to be desired and just says that he can't be a leader or a team player in this league as of right now. That doesn't mean he can't grow, but I'd be very intrigued what would happen if the Knicks indeed get Durant and Kyrie in the summer. "His" team my ass. Will he be "ill" again and then shit all over the Knicks after getting traded?

He's a young man learning through FAILING... Dude needs to quit running his mouth, it's not doing anything positive for his image/brand.

His image/brand will be fine because hes tight with J. Cole. So hell always have that insulation, but man that article posted is really disheartening. He wanna be like that, then its whatever. Glad we got KP out of that mess.

He will bounce around on bad teams because no good team is going to trade for him. He probably wont care as long as he gets 20+ shots a game.

Could easily end up that way. These quotes don't speak well to his mindset.
Fake Alpha.
How was it determined this guy was ever an "alpha" anyhow? He actually seems kind of soft, feelings so easily hurt.
Was it because LeGM deemed it so?

We gotta remember that Knicks fans are not very bright. They are calling it a win to trade KP for a guy they should have drafted and for cap space they shouldn't have given away and some likely late firsts and calling it a win. And they are now calling DSJ a future star but a week ago when DSJ had a triple double there and had a career high in assists he was a bum who they still wouldn't admit was better than Frank, who wouldn't even start for a major college team.
So let's not make too much fun of Knicks fans. Over the last 2 decades they have had like 3 seasons where they were not an embarrassment across all major sports. So it's like making fun of the disabled.
As for DSJ... he's making it easier and easier to not care about. I hope he has a nice career but this fake ass victim shit is a real disappointing. He's gonna throw a fit and his camp is going to leak he wanted to be traded and he's going to sit at home refusing to come back to the team while we struggle without JJ. Then he's going to say he was napping when the news came out and act like he was blindsided and wants revenge. He's just as retarded sounding as the Knicks fans.

Man, I've been a big DSJ fan and supporter, but that is kinda of meh...
Why can't some of these dudes just speak on the court. I bet his only good games come against us and Charlotte next season because of this mentality.
