Default Mavs Select Jaden Hardy with the 37th Pick

Thought Hardy deserved his own thread. Here's an excellent article breaking down his 24 G-League games. I can't help but think we got something here...

Agree! We got a guy 37th that is likely going to be a better talent than Josh Green was at 18 for the love of god.

Even his lowest ceiling is a streaky scorer. He is one of the most talented players in the draft. Funny, former Underdog of d-m.com and I were talking about Hardy on twitter and why the Mavs would even bother working him out since there was no way he would fall to 26.

Welp...

And this is a get at 26 let alone 37.

My mind finally processed who Hardy plays like: Jordan Clarkson.

Not to mention, the Mavs apparently had him like 17th or something on their board, so that means they probably would have taken Hardy at #26 if they hadn't done the Wood trade. So effectively that means they got Wood for almost literally nothing- just some salary filler. That is some true wizardry by Nico.

I'm really excited about this kid. The talent is clearly there. In high school he was an absolute scoring machine. And his improvement over his short run in the G-league is very encouraging.

I expect he's going to be long term project and probably won't contribute much of anything next season. But down the road he could be something really special. This is what great teams do- find diamonds in the rough. This is how the Spurs were able to surround Duncan with great supporting casts for his entire career, and how the Warriors dynasty all of a sudden seems as strong as it ever was, even after losing Durant. You find value with late round picks or undrafted free agents. That's the piece the Mavs were always missing under Donnie and Carlisle. The ability (or willingness) to find young players with potential that other teams overlooked, and then develop them into real NBA players. If the Mavs had been able to do that over the last 20 years, Dirk probably would've had more than one ring.

Well it's interesting that Hardy is compared to Buddy Hield, but Hield had four years of college experience. Very unusual to be a lottery pick after four years in school. So Hardy has a lot of catching up to do experience-wise to get any meaningful minutes.

But Kidd is the coach that gives guys chances. A lot will depend on what happens with THJ or Brunson.

And really, you just never know til thrown to the wolves. Look at Tyrese Maxey who I think is a good comparison, and he contributed right away.

It really depends on what we need. Maxey filled a need in Philly. Gained experience his rookie season, because Simmons could not shoot, need a floor spreader, Maxey went to work on his checklist in the offseason and came back better.

Good thread by Rylan Stiles (@Rylan_Stiles) on Twitter from Hardy's G League coach. Of course it's rosy, but gives more insight...

- Jason Hart on Jaden Hardy "he understands when and when not to. When to be aggressive and not to. He matured as the season went along."

- Jason Hart on Jaden Hardy's personality "He is a basketball junkie. He will continuously work on his game. He is a shy individual, he has a great smile, laugh, personality but he is shy, reserved." Said Hardy will prove himself.

(sounds a lot like Luka from a personality standpoint)

Bonus:

- Jason Hart on G-League Ignite "we try to teach our guys fundamentals because when the athleticism leaves that's what you're left with."

- Jason Hart on the benefits of G-League ignite "they understand NBA terminology." Mentions they'll be ready and are taught daily how to play in the NBA.

EDIT - what the hell is up with copy paste to this site all of the sudden with the ? marks errwhere, I fixed the " and ' but what a pain in the ass

I like the Hardy pick but like Spiral said, he is probably YEARS away from being a reliable contributor. Think Anfernee Simons. 4-5 years away.

Given his pedigree and how quickly he progressed in a short amount of time in the g-league, I would be very surprised if it took that long. I'm thinking he'll see very limited time this year, but really contribute in year 2. If by year 3 he hasn't become a real quality NBA guard, then it probably won't happen.

Interesting how the pandemic lead to Hardy's decision to join the ignite. Love them comparing Sharpe who CHOSE to just sit out and not play at Kentucky but was rewarded for the 7th pick. Hardy plays for the ignite and is punished because of it.

This dude is gonna be a good one. Watching some more of his G league highlights and seeing his understanding of the game. Not to mention everyone says he's a straight up bucket. So I pay less attention to the threes and other shots he's making, and see a kid who has plenty of room to develop, but already showing glimpses of playmaking for others. I love the Sharpe comparison and it makes me like him even more for going out and playing instead of hiding. Tough these kids got a whole year taken away from them when they could have easily played and been fine, statistically speaking.

The more I watch him and the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking that Hardy actually will see heavy minutes and contribute next season. Or at least that's what the Mavs are hoping, because it really seems like they're not sweating the loss of Brunson very much, and don't seem to have any sense of urgency to find a replacement. I'm really hoping that decision doesn't backfire.

Hardy can score and shoot. That's his MO. He can shoot in the face of defenders and under pressure as well.

Speaking of the draft...Jovic had 25/9 today in his summer league game. He was really the only player that made me think twice about trading 26 if he was there. And he went 27. If he turns into anything, then he is absolutely tailor-made to play next to Bam.

Man I love what I saw from Hardy today. He's definitely still a bit raw and still getting a feel for the game. But man, the talent is very real. From what I've seen of him, he's got great handles and is a very creative scorer. He's also a 3pt gunslinger, which can be both good and bad- but mostly good because he absolutely can shoot. Gives me Jason Terry vibes a little.

Having watched as much of I can of him on youtube and seeing him play a full game yesterday, I think you're right. There's a reason he was originally projected to be a lottery pick. The talent is through the roof.

Love the Hardy pick. Like his game. All for playing and developing young guys. Still think that if Hardy plays more than spot minutes this season, it?s because something went horribly wrong. Not because he?s too good to keep off the court. There is a learning curve for him to simply know where to be on the court, let alone defensive limitations. Some average to spare vet backup PG like Jared McClaughlin would likely take his lunch money, or whatever the saying is.

All the vets and his teammates are singing his praises so far in camp. Usually a rose colored glasses time, but still good to see that they think he's gonna be a steal, etc. I keep remembering EL calling out the skill level in Vegas and how bad that team was to watch that he had to run with in summer league. Let's hope he turns into at least a solid rotational player and work from there.

Summer league is always that way. Not only is the team made up of players nowhere near NBA level guys but they have no chemistry and a lack of actual practice time too.

Hardy has 0 fundamentals on defense, so he still has a ways to go with such things. The raw talent is still ridiculous though. He just needs to turn streetball into NBA ball.

Oh definitely, I just remember the little bit of it I watched looked glaringly worse than previous years. Tough to play with along with the reasons you listed.

It was abysmal. I'm not sure what they ever learn from these SL games. If there's a standout guy it's pretty clear, but we have lost guys who turn out to be legit players, most recent being Cam Payne

Hardy killing it for the legends. 33 points last night and 2 4 point plays. Just a matter of time with this kid.

I never bought into the hype over this guy.

Saw him SL play and wasn't impressed with his basketball IQ and defense

He just comes off to me as volume shot chucker who will never be efficient.

I'm guessing in 2 or 3 years he won't even be on this roster

Dude is a fresh 20 years having missed his senior season of high school thanks to Covid and made the decision to jump straight into playing against adults. I think the two negatives you mentioned are greatly impacted by his timeline and at the same time are two very coachable traits. I would disagree on basketball IQ, especially from an offensive viewpoint. He's obviously advanced enough in scoring but has to continue to learn playing within a system and team offense.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's got a tough hill to climb and I think he finds himself at least in a rotation in the NBA.

Hardy needs to continue to work on strength/conditioning and watch tons of video on the splash brothers - how to smartly run, make cuts, etc. to free himself for that sweet jumper. Somewhere in my deepest dreams i wonder how the mavs offense would look with guys who know how to pass/cut/move around and set picks. All with Luka still running the helm.

The kid has more than enough talent to make it in the NBA. FAR less talented players than him have had long, productive careers. Players of his talent who wash out of the league do so because of lack of work ethic, mental health issues or other similar problems of a personal nature. I don't know that it will be with the Mavericks, but I do believe he'll be a productive NBA player within 3 years.

Well if he gets as many chances as Josh Green has gotten, then I'm pretty optimistic.

Remember, last year he played in the G league, and it took him until the second half of the season to start playing better. I'm pretty encouraged that he is playing well right out of the gate.

If, by the end of this season, Hardy is able to run the point for the Mavs for just 15 minutes a game, that would be great. That could give Luka and Dinwiddie a few more minutes of rest per game, and that would be awesome. This would let Spencer play a couple more minutes with Luka. That would fill a huge part of the hole Brunson left behind, and maybe fill that need for a third ball handler.

If not this season, hopefully by the next one. We waited 2 full seasons for Josh Green to come around. I believe Hardy has far more skill on offense. Can't wait to see him dropping some threes when Luka kicks it out to hin.

Unfortunately, Luka can't play in SL because that's the net time you'll see Hardy play if it's not the G-league
