I wish we would just sign Schroder and call it an offseason. Literally the perfect fit. He'll wear out his welcome by the deadline, Hardy starts playing well Jan-Feb, then you trade him.

It's perfect.

Seriously. Schroder is a perfect for a one year rental.

Nets got TJ Warren on a one year deal? Wtf? Money hasn't come out yet, but it would be irritating as hell if it was for the minimum.

I really would have liked him here. I highly doubt it's for vet min.

Nets should grow a pair and just run it back. Trading away Kyrie and KD just doesn't vibe with their other offseason moves (including the inexplicable trade for Royce O'Neale).

I never even suggested getting him because I thought he'd cost someone some nice change even if it was after being off for a couple of seasons...

Is there any way the Chicago-Dragic signing could end up being a SnT where he goes to the Mavs and Frank goes to the Bulls? Frank's contract is now guaranteed, I assume, so maybe waiting for that to happen?

Why wouldn?t we have just signed him outright and waived Frank? I think I?d rather have Frank tbh. He offers a lot more defensively, and he?s still pretty young.

Dragic has better handles and should provide some veteran leadership, but your are right about Frank offering more on defense. I also think he might help Luka keep his cool during those games where his frustration boils to the point of drawing technical fouls.

It might make sense because the Mavs are working on another addition to the roster and need the open spot. And it may be that the Bulls would like to add Frank, but do not have anyone of interest for the Mavs where the salaries would match. In this scenario, a trade would work out well for both teams. I think it is a long-shot, but it seems to me that since the salaries match (not surprising since both are at the vet minimum) and its a head scratcher as to why the Mavs did not apparently pursue Dragic.

Mavs use part of MLE to make Hardy contract a multi-year deal.

Cuban learned his lesson? Always get bird rights and always make them a RFA.

Without cap, it would have been a two-year minimum deal. Sounds like it's a hair above minimum but got that three year deal on (2+ team option/RFA).

Just play him from day one rookie be damned. The Mavs so badly need to hit on him that I'm not sure they have a choice.

This. We?re so desperate for a draft pick to hit. Give him minutes game 1 if you can

I?m convinced we have something in Hardy. When you watch him shoot and dribble it just looks so natural and effortless. Such a contrast to Green who is an athlete first, basketball player second. Hardy is a basketball player through and through.

This was Hardy's best all around game. You can see he needs some fine tuning and sometimes forces things, but what SG doesn't force their shot from time to time. They played him at pg a lot to add to his game, but he really is more of a pure SG.

What puzzles me is his teammate Dyson Daniels goes 8 in the draft barely averaging 12 ppg on 26% from three for the Ignite. Like I really cannot imagine picking him over Hardy.

I mean, I can't imagine Marvin Bagely going over Luka. But that's our good fortune. The Mavs should retire Vlade's jersey for that.

Hopefully Hardy is as good as we're all projecting.

Funny you mention Luka. On another Mavs board, they trash Hardy because of his defense and lack of athleticism. And they judge him because he doesn't have a good vertical. I'm thinking...imagine if we judged Luka based on his vertical and his defense.

Athleticism and a vertical aren't always the same thing. You can be athletically quick, which Hardy is, and not jump super high.

And critical thinking is what role Hardy fills. He is filling in for Brunson full stop unless we make another move. So if you could hide Brunson's 6'1, no athleticism, and vertical (I don't think I've ever seen Brunson dunk or can't remember it) then Hardy should be fine.

Big issue with the team right now is a backup pg. Still need one of those in an emergency. Dinwiddie and Hardy can play the position, but I'd prefer to have a more pure one.

I believe the following veteran PGs are still available:

Dennis Schroder (I thought that there was report he signed somewhere but I cannot find it)

Eric Bledsoe (waived today)

D.J. Augustin

Avery Bradley

Heh on Schroder I think you got fooled by EL's earlier post showing a hypothetical Woj tweet of him signing anywhere else but with the Mavs.

But he and Bledsoe would be nice. Bradley is more of a SG to me whereas I've never been impressed with him. Not sure what DJ has left in the tank, but could definitely provide a veteran PG presence with good shooting.

Kind of intrigued at the Derrick Rose idea but that would take Cuban to spend a decent chunk towards tax, though his contract has a club option for the following and final year (2023). His game has sneakily morphed into a complimentary piece with his shooting numbers, both outside and at the FT line vastly improving.

Athleticism and a vertical aren't always the same thing. You can be athletically quick, which Hardy is, and not jump super high.
Even beyond all that... he looks pretty athletic to me. *shrug*

Yup, not getting Dragic (again) stings. And Schroder makes so much basketball sense, I'm wondering if the Mavs have just decided he's a headache they'd rather not deal with. Because there's no way they haven't at least considered him. And I'm wondering if his reputation around the league is worse than we realize, because it seems odd that nobody else has picked him up either.

Fred Katz: A note with the free-agency moratorium officially done: The Knicks could not turn the Isaiah Hartenstein acquisition into a sign-and-trade because the Clippers were capped on how much they could pay him. As for Jalen Brunson becoming a S&T, we don?t know until we know. ? via Twitter FredKatz

I really hope we are able to get a TPE for Brunson. We can?t go into the season with Luka being the only ball handler. Dinwiddie is capable, but if Luka goes down for any stretch of time they are fucked. This is after Cuban was saying last offseason we needed another ball handler when we had Luka, JB, and Burke.

I'm not sure if anyone has brought this up but when you look at Knicks roster the only guy I would even consider would be Derrick Rose.

He's kind of flown under the radar but dude still has something left in the tank.

I think he would be very capable ball handler for 16-20 minutes per night.

He still has good offensive ability and that would be a sneaky good pickup by the Mavs.

Dinwiddie, Rose and Frank gives us 3 rotation pieces to allow Luka time to rest,

Jalen Brunson has yet to rise to All-Star level, but league sources say that the presumed boost to his All-Star chances by moving from the Western Conference to the East was indeed among his motivations for agreeing to leave the Dallas Mavericks for the New York Knicks. ? via Marc Stein @ marcstein.substack.com
Top Rumors, Jalen Brunson, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks

My sense, though, is that the league is likely to take a deeper look at the hiring of Rick Brunson as an assistant to Tom Thibodeau. That move, which the Knicks still have not officially announced, was reported by SportsNet New York?s Ian Begley in early June. As Rick Brunson himself indicated in an April piece by ESPN?s Tim MacMahon, he had been actively involved in his son?s contract negotiations all season. ? via Marc Stein @ marcstein.substack.com
Free Agency, Tampering, Tom Thibodeau, Jalen Brunson, Rick Brunson, New York Knicks

Some in coaching circles have estimated that the Knicks plan to pay the elder Brunson a seven-figure annual sum to replace Kenny Payne, who left the club to become the head coach at Louisville. I wrote about the ?very, very, very real? threat that the Knicks posed to steal Brunson away from the Mavericks on June 24, nearly a week before free agency officially began, but there appears to be more to examine here than mere jumping-the-gun talk. ? via Marc Stein @ marcstein.substack.com

Marc Stein: The expectation, I?m told, is that Jalen Brunson?s new deal to join the Knicks is unlikely to be finalized today as part of the Day 1 wave of signings and trades after the NBA moratorium was lifted. Ian Begley: Multiple teams have expressed interest in NYK?s Taj Gibson during FA period. Gibson?s contract for next year is fully non-guaranteed. NYK could waive Gibson to create cap space for Brunson or acquire Brunson via S&T. His NYK teammates have roundly praised Gibson over past 3 years ? via Twitter IanBegley

Probably trying to maximize what they can get out of it. Brunson has already agreed to the dollars and years....now it's up to the Knicks on how they want to do it....can they milk a pick or player for Taj, then sign and trade Brunson....or just cut Taj and sign Brunson....a good front office will look at all angles and maximize the deal.
