Perhaps this has been posted before, but a great link of Gortat killing the 76ers.

The Magic are officially in the Luxury Tax with the Bass signing.

Also, saw this nugget at thirdquartercollapse.com:

Quote:
Additionally, a well-connected source informs me that swingman Matt Barnes and center Theo Ratliff are the Magic's next targets. The source said the Magic assured Barnes that they wanted to get Bass first, before turning their full attention to him.
They're not matching on Gortat.

Do you by any chance pronounce 'Marcin' like "Martian?" Cause that's the only thing that could make me more excited about this signing, after watching a few of those highlights.

Most likely they will not match but it's not done until it's done. There is still a possibility they change their mind.

I just hope that Orlando won't match just because he's a great trade asset. anyone knows how's about the BYC thing? can they trade him after 6 months or after a year?

I believe it's just after six months, but regardless they'd be saddled with that extra salary and it may be difficult to convince other teams he's worth the MLE considering he'll still be a back up with limited minutes at that point.

I have a bad feeling they're going to try to doe something clever here, but I sure hope that isn't the case and that we came to some kind of agreement in the four way trade.

I'm hoping the TPE is a good "go away" kind of suggestion.

Otis is sending out all kinds of mixed signals right now, and IMO the most likely explanation is that he's still trying to negotiate with free agents, other teams, etc. to fill out his roster. Maintaining the option to match on Gortat is one of the tools he has at his disposal to maintain some leverage in the negotiations. Matching would still cost the Magic a good 8-9 million over what it'd cost to acquire an acceptable backup for Dwight through other means, and that remains a hefty price to pay for a guy who'd figure to play somewhere between 6-12 mpg in a playoff series. We'll see.

That seems to be his MO, he would flip flop daily on his stance with Gortat. Once it started breaking that Dallas was offering what they did, he made it seem like he wasn't going to match.

the LT implications just don't make it seem like it's a fit for them to keep Gortat. They can get someone like Ratliff, who is being talked about, to fill the role.

I'd rather not think about the implications if they match.

Gortat Disappointed That Magic Might Match Mavs' Offer Sheet

Posted Jul 10, 2009 4:30PM By Tim Povtak (RSS feed)

Marcin GortatORLANDO -- With nothing else pressing before he leaves for his native Poland on Saturday, Marcin Gortat has been hanging around the Orlando Pro Summer League this week, rubbing shoulders with various NBA people.

And he doesn't like what he's been hearing.

Gortat, a restricted free agent, was ecstatic earlier this week after signing an offer sheet worth $33 million over five years with the Dallas Mavericks, believing it was his ticket to both riches and a starting position in the NBA. Now he hears otherwise. Because he is a restricted free agent, the Magic can keep him just by matching the Mavericks' offer.

"I have a feeling now they (Magic) are going to match it,'' Gortat said Friday between Summer League Games. "That's what I'm hearing, they will match. We'll have to see, but I'm kind of down right now. Either way, I'll end up on a pretty good team.''

Although Gortat is guaranteed the same money on either team, his development as a player could be greatly effected if he remains in Orlando.

Dallas would be expecting him to replace Erick Dampier in the starting lineup. The Magic would keep him as a backup to All-Star center Dwight Howard, which would limit his minutes considerably."You just never know about [Otis Smith]. He can laugh. He can smile, and at the end of the day, it's no, no, no, they aren't going to match, and all of a sudden I'm finding out they might match.''
-- Marcin Gortat

Although Gortat also could see time at power forward in Orlando -- the Magic experimented last season with Gortat and Howard playing together -- the signing of free agent power forward Brandon Bass on Friday would further limit his role.

"I want to develop my game and become a better player,'' he said. "I just don't know if I'd be getting the same minutes to play here as in Dallas.''

The Magic agreed to a four-year, $18 million deal with Bass, hoping he gives them more of a physical presence to complement a lineup mostly of shooters. It will allow Rashard Lewis to spend more time at his natural position of small forward.

Although Gortat's contract would seem excessive for a backup, the Magic still view him as an asset, and there are plenty of teams looking for centers. They would have to wait at least 90 days before they could trade him.

"I've said all along, I think the number (his contract) is a little high,'' Smith said. "But that doesn't change how we think. One thing (signing Bass) doesn't have anything to do with the other (matching Gortat). I'm still working on a few other things, and until those transpire, it's kind of premature to say what we're going to do.''

Smith still would like to add another wing player, another center/forward and a third point guard to the roster. Regardless of who else is signed, they still expect a starting lineup of Howard, Lewis, Jameer Nelson, Vince Carter and Mickael Pietrus.

"He (Smith) is like an iceberg,'' Gortat said. "You just never know about him. He can laugh. He can smile, and at the end of the day, it's no, no, no, they aren't going to match, and all of a sudden I'm finding out they might match.''

That would just depress the crap outta me. But we have to be prepared for such a case.

If that happens, who could we try to get with the MLE?

Odom?
Ilgauskas? (Seems like an old Gortat to me)

Not much left...

EDIT: If Gortat WANTS to go to Dallas (Which he does), I don't see why he (Otis) has to be a douche and S&T him. Let the man go where he wants.

All signs point to Otis just posturing for a better bargaining position with his replacement. Dear Zeus, I hope I'm right.

I have a bad feeling they're going to try to doe something clever here, but I sure hope that isn't the case and that we came to some kind of agreement in the four way trade.
I highly doubt that Orlando matches on Gortat. Orlando is already way over the cap, they would have to pay a backup C the full MLE and they haven't filled all roster spots yet. Moreover, if they match, they can't trade him for 90 days. With the money they gonna spend on Bass and Gortat (in case they match), they could have easily signed Hedo. That doesn't make any sense.

That is a relief but the possibility still remains he matches with the intention of trading Gortat after 90 days. I think we're in trouble here.

I really really really hope that Orlando wouldn't match. Gortat is exactly the kind of center this Mavs team needs.

This is true, why spend $5.8 mill and around $4 mill a year for Gortat and Bass and not resign Turkoglu? It wouldn't make any sense ... the line up of Nelson, VC, Turkoglu, Lewis, and Howard would seem potentially unstoppable.

I maintain that I will be absolutely stunned - floored - if they match.

It just doesn't make any sense. An Orlando blog is reporting that they're scheduled to meet with Theo Ratliff and they're about to sign Matt Barnes. I just don't see them spending that kind of money on Gortat.

If you watch this video, you can hear Gortat say that he asked Otis to not match, if is going to, just yet because he has plans to go back to Poland -- or something -- and doesn't want to have to go do his physicals and such.

I have the feeling Otis is just jerking us around. With Orlando being so far over the cap I can't see why they would match?

It's another quote from Gortat. It's from Hoopsword, so take it for what it's worth..

Quote:
Magic Get Bass, Gortat Ready

ORLANDO – The Orlando Magic have an agreement in place with blossoming power forward Brandon Bass on a four-year, $18 million free-agent contract, a deal that increases the likelihood that they won't match Marcin Gortat's $33.9 million offer sheet from the Dallas Mavericks.

Magic general manager Otis Smith said the Bass deal wasn't fully finalized yet, but the two sides were "really close."

Dallas signed Gortat to a five-year, $33.9 million offer sheet on Wednesday, but the Magic have seven days to decide whether or not to match that contract. Smith still plans to use all seven days, more so for leverage with other free agents, but the likelihood now is that Orlando will allow Gortat to leave.

"It just doesn't look like they are going to pay all of that money to a backup player who plays 10 minutes a night," Gortat said from the Orlando Pro Summer League, where he's been a spectator all week. "(The Bass signing) explains a lot to me and it looks like I've got to get ready for a trip to Dallas."

If Orlando does decide to match Gortat's offer sheet, it would likely be doing so it order to use the promising center as a trade asset. Houston, which was the first team to call Gortat on July 1, would likely be interested in Gortat wil Yao Ming expected to miss all of next season.

Bass, 23, averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game last season for the Mavericks mostly as a reserve in 81 games. He's long been on Smith's radar, and the importance of signing him increased after Orlando missed on Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess this summer in free agency and had to trade away Tony Battie in the Vince Carter deal with New Jersey.

Bass could start in Orlando at power forward, a move that will allow Rashard Lewis to move back to his natural small forward position. Or he could continue to play off the bench. Smith said the performance of the players in Orlando's rotations will ultimately decide what happens.

"He gives us size and a physical presence and somebody who can defend the bigger (power forwards) and give us somebody who will allow Rashard to step on the other side and play some (small forward)," Smith said.

Smith's next target is another wing player, and his top target is believed to be Phoenix's Matt Barnes. The veteran wing player would give the Magic more defensive grit and he is a natural fit because of his ability to shoot the 3-pointer.

Also, from SI:

Quote:
The Mavericks were hoping to re-sign Bass, but ran out of money and playing time with the acquisition of Shawn Marion. Coincidentally, Dallas is expected to soon get restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat from Orlando; paperwork is going through on an offer sheet that the Magic are expected not to match.
